Description: Double perovskite Bi2NiMnO6 (BNMO) thin films grown on p-Si (100) substrates with LaNiO3 (LNO) buffer layers were fabricated using chemical solution deposition. The crystal structure, surface topography, surface chemical state, ferroelectric, and current-voltage characteristics of BNMO thin films were investigated. The results show that the nanocrystalline BNMO thin films on p-Si substrates without and with LNO buffer layer are monoclinic phase, which have antiferroelectric-like properties. The composition and chemical state of BNMO thin films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In the whole electrical property testing process, when the BNMO/p-Si heterojunction changed into a BNMO/LNO/p-Si heterojunction, the diode behavior of a single diode changing into two tail to tail diodes was observed. The conduction mechanism and temperature stability were also discussed.

Description: The hot compression tests of Ti-12Mo-4Zr-5Sn alloy were tested on the thermo-mechanical simulator of Gleeble-3500 under isothermal and constant strain rate. We studied this alloy’s behavior during thermal deformation at the conditions of T = 670~820 °C, ε ˙ = 0.001~10 s−1, and deformation degree 70%. The rheological stress curves of the alloy were modified, the characteristics of the rheological stress curves were analyzed, and the activation energy map of hot deformation was established. A physical constitutive model of the alloy based on strain compensation was established, which has taken the relationship between Young’s modulus and self-diffusion coefficient and temperature into account. Moreover, the intrinsic hot workability ξ map of the alloy was established based on the polar reciprocity model. The results show that this alloy’s rheological stress will descend when the temperature of deformation rises and grow when the strain rate increases, and has negative sensitivity of temperature and positive sensitivity of strain rate. According to the error calculation, the physical constitutive model’s correlation coefficient is 0.9910 and the average relative error is 3.97%, which has good accuracy. Through the analysis of the microstructures of the instability zone and the stability zone, it was found that the instability mode of the instability zone was dominated by the local flow, and the deformation mechanism of the stability zone was dominated by the dynamic recrystallization. The optimum processing parameters of the alloy known from ξ map and metallographic structure are the following: T = 790~820 °C and ε ˙ = 0.001~0.01 s−1.

Description: Insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are widely used to control insect pests, but their efficacy is reduced when pests evolve resistance. We report on a novel allele (r16) of the cadherin gene (PgCad1) in pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella) associated with resistance to Bt toxin Cry1Ac, which is produced by transgenic cotton. The r16 allele isolated from a field population in China has 1545 base pairs of a degenerate transposon inserted in exon 20 of PgCad1, which generates a mis-spliced transcript containing a premature stop codon. A strain homozygous for r16 had 300-fold resistance to Cry1Ac, 2.6-fold cross-resistance to Cry2Ab, and completed its life cycle on transgenic Bt cotton producing Cry1Ac. Inheritance of Cry1Ac resistance was recessive and tightly linked with r16. Compared with transfected insect cells expressing wild-type PgCad1, cells expressing r16 were less susceptible to Cry1Ac. Recombinant cadherin protein was transported to the cell membrane in cells transfected with the wild-type PgCad1 allele, but not in cells transfected with r16. Cadherin occurred on brush border membrane vesicles (BBMVs) in the midgut of susceptible larvae, but not resistant larvae. These results imply that the r16 allele mediates Cry1Ac resistance in pink bollworm by interfering with the localization of cadherin.

Description: Co2Zr and Co2Ti are both cubic crystals with a Cu2Mg-type structure. The elastic, thermodynamic and electronic properties of the intermetallic compounds Co2Zr and Co2Ti are investigated by using ab initio plane-wave pseudopotential density functional theory (PWPDFT) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) under high temperature and pressure. The partially calculated results are consistent with the available experimental data. The elastic properties of Co2Zr and Co2Ti under high pressure were first studied by first principles calculations. The results indicate that the elastic constants, elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio are functions of pressure, indicating that the effect of pressure on the ductility and anisotropy is significant. The thermodynamic properties are also calculated by the quasi-harmonic Debye model. In the range of 0~100 GPa pressure and 0~1500 K temperature, the Debye temperature Θ, the heat capacity CV and the thermal expansion α vary with pressure and temperature. Co2Ti has a higher Debye temperature than Co2Zr under the same pressure. Decreasing temperature and increasing pressure have the same effects on CV and α. The electron density difference and density of states of Co2Zr and Co2Ti are finally investigated. The results show that both Co2Zr and Co2Ti are typically metal crystals but Co2Zr has greater covalence than Co2Ti.

Description: Geothermal energy resources, such as a green and clean renewable energy, are utilized all over the world, especially in soft clay areas along coastal cities in China, such as Shanghai. However, the operation of the ground-buried heat exchanger potentially affects the initial temperature field and the thermal balance, which will probably result in some potential engineering or environmental problems. This paper presents results from a series of large-scale laboratory modeling experiments which were conducted to study the thermal balance in saturated soft clay during the operation of the ground source heat pump (GSHP) system. In experiments, thermal phenomena are induced by a heat exchanger which is embedded in the testing soils and investigated by temperature sensor arrays. It summarizes the experimental methodologies and presents the time-dependent temperature distribution within the testing soils both in operation stage and the re-stabilization duration. Characteristics of thermal balance are discussed in two specific parameters of relative time ratio and temperature factor by comparing summer and winter cases. The thermal mattress effect is proposed to provide valuable guidelines for the utilization and operation of the GSHP system in soft clay areas.

Description: For the detection of deep-sea natural gas hydrates, it is very important to accurately detect the 13CO2/12CO2 isotope ratio of dissolved gas in seawater. In this paper, a 13CO2/12CO2 isotope ratio sensor is investigated, which uses a tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) technique at 4.3 μm. The proposed sensor consists of a mid-infrared interband cascade laser (ICL) operating in continuous wave mode, a long optical path multi-pass gas cell (MPGC) of 24 m, and a mid-infrared mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) detector. Aiming at the problem of the strong absorption intensity of the two absorption lines of 13CO2 and 12CO2 being affected by temperature, a high-precision temperature control system for the MPGC was fabricated. Five different concentrations of CO2 gas were configured to calibrate the sensor, and the response linearity could reach 0.9992 for 12CO2 and 0.9996 for 13CO2. The data show that the carbon isotope measurement precision was assessed to be 0.0139‰ when the integration time was 92 s and the optical path length was 24 m. The sensor is combined with a gas–liquid separator to detect the 13CO2/12CO2 isotope ratio of CO2 gas extracted from water. Results validate the reported sensor system’s potential application in deep-sea natural gas hydrate exploration.

Description: Separating point clouds into ground and non-ground points is a preliminary and essential step in various applications of airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data, and many filtering algorithms have been proposed to automatically filter ground points. Among them, the progressive triangulated irregular network (TIN) densification filtering (PTDF) algorithm is widely employed due to its robustness and effectiveness. However, the performance of this algorithm usually depends on the detailed initial terrain and the cautious tuning of parameters to cope with various terrains. Consequently, many approaches have been proposed to provide as much detailed initial terrain as possible. However, most of them require many user-defined parameters. Moreover, these parameters are difficult to determine for users. Recently, the cloth simulation filtering (CSF) algorithm has gradually drawn attention because its parameters are few and easy-to-set. CSF can obtain a fine initial terrain, which simultaneously provides a good foundation for parameter threshold estimation of progressive TIN densification (PTD). However, it easily causes misclassification when further refining the initial terrain. To achieve the complementary advantages of CSF and PTDF, a novel filtering algorithm that combines cloth simulation (CS) and PTD is proposed in this study. In the proposed algorithm, a high-quality initial provisional digital terrain model (DTM) is obtained by CS, and the parameter thresholds of PTD are estimated from the initial provisional DTM based on statistical analysis theory. Finally, PTD with adaptive parameter thresholds is used to refine the initial provisional DTM. These contributions of the implementation details achieve accuracy enhancement and resilience to parameter tuning. The experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm improves performance over their direct predecessors. Furthermore, compared with the publicized improved PTDF algorithms, our algorithm is not only superior in accuracy but also practicality. The fact that the proposed algorithm is of high accuracy and easy-to-use is desirable for users.

Description: Tree stem detection is a key step toward retrieving detailed stem attributes from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data. Various point-based methods have been proposed for the stem point extraction at both individual tree and plot levels. The main limitation of the point-based methods is their high computing demand when dealing with plot-level TLS data. Although segment-based methods can reduce the computational burden and uncertainties of point cloud classification, its application is largely limited to urban scenes due to the complexity of the algorithm, as well as the conditions of natural forests. Here we propose a novel and simple segment-based method for efficient stem detection at the plot level, which is based on the curvature feature of the points and connected component segmentation. We tested our method using a public TLS dataset with six forest plots that were collected for the international TLS benchmarking project in Evo, Finland. Results showed that the mean accuracies of the stem point extraction were comparable to the state-of-art methods (〉95%). The accuracies of the stem mappings were also comparable to the methods tested in the international TLS benchmarking project. Additionally, our method was applicable to a wide range of stem forms. In short, the proposed method is accurate and simple; it is a sensible solution for the stem detection of standing trees using TLS data.

Description: The elastic and electronic properties of AlxNiyZrz (AlNiZr, Al2NiZr6, AlNi2Zr, and Al5Ni2Zr) under pressure from 0 to 50 GPa have been investigated by using the density function theory (DFT) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The elastic constants Cij (GPa), Shear modulus G (GPa), Bulk modulus B (GPa), Poisson’s ratio σ, Young’s modulus E (GPa), and the ratio of G/B have been studied under a pressure scale to 50 GPa. The relationship between Young’s modulus of AlxNiyZrz is Al5Ni2Zr 〉 AlNiZr 〉 Al2NiZr6 〉 AlNi2Zr, which indicates that the relationship between the stiffness of AlxNiyZrz is Al5Ni2Zr 〉 AlNiZr 〉 Al2NiZr6 〉 AlNi2Zr. The conditions are met at 30 and 50 GPa, respectively. What is more, the G/B ratios for AlNiZr, AlNi2Zr, Al2NiZr6, and Al5Ni2Zr classify these materials as brittle under zero pressure, while with the increasing of the pressure the G/B ratios of AlNiZr, AlNi2Zr, Al2NiZr6, and Al5Ni2Zr all become lower, which indicates that the pressure could enhance the brittle properties of these materials. Poisson’s ratio studies show that AlNiZr, AlNi2Zr, and Al2NiZr6 are all a central force, while Al5Ni2Zr is a non-central force pressure scale to 50 GPa. The energy band structure indicates that they are all metal. The relationship between the electrical conductivity of AlxNiyZrz is Al2NiZr6 〉 Al5Ni2Zr 〉 AlNi2Zr 〉 AlNiZr. What is more, compared with Al5Ni2Zr, AlNi2Zr has a smaller electron effective mass and larger atom delocalization. By exploring the elastic and electronic properties, they are all used as a superconducting material. However, Al5Ni2Zr is the best of them when used as a superconducting material.
