Description: The aerosol size distribution and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) number concentration were measured using a wide-range particle spectrometer (WPS) and a cloud condensation nuclei counter (CCNC) on Mt. Tian from 31 July to 9 September, 2019. Combined with meteorological data, distribution characteristics of aerosol size and CCN and their influencing factors were analyzed. The results indicated that the mean aerosol number concentration was 5475.6 ± 5636.5 cm−3. The mean CCN concentrations were 183.7 ± 114.5 cm−3, 729.8 ± 376.1 cm−3, 1630.5 ± 980.5 cm−3, 2162.5 ± 1345.3 cm−3, and 2575.7 ± 1632.9 cm−3 at supersaturation levels of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, and 0.8%, respectively. The aerosol number size distribution is unimodal, and the dominant particle size is 30–60 nm. Affected by the height of the boundary layer and the valley wind, the diurnal variation in aerosol number concentration shows a unimodal distribution with a peak at 17:00, and the CCN number concentration showed a bimodal distribution with peaks at 18:00 and 21:00. The particle size distribution and supersaturation have a major impact on the activation of the aerosol into CCN. At 0.1% supersaturation (S), the 300–500 nm particles are most likely to activate to CCN. Particles of 100–300 nm are most easily activated at 0.2% (S), while particles of 60–80 nm are most likely activated at high supersaturation (≥0.4%). The concentrations of aerosol and CCN are higher in the northerly wind. Ambient relative humidity (RH) has little relationship with the aerosol activation under high supersaturation. According to N = CSk fitting the CCN spectrum, C = 3297 and k = 0.90 on Mt. Tian, characteristic of the clean continental type.

Description: In recent years, drought disaster has occurred frequently in China, causing significant agricultural losses. It is increasingly important to assess the risk of agricultural drought disaster (ADD) and to develop a targeted risk management approach. In this study, an ADD risk assessment model was established. First, an improved fuzzy analytic hierarchy process based on an accelerated genetic algorithm (AGA-FAHP) was used to build an evaluation indicator system. Then, based on the indicators, the ADD assessment connection numbers were established using the improved connection number method. Finally, the entropy information diffusion method was used to form an ADD risk assessment model. The model was applied to the Huaibei Plain in Anhui Province (China), with the assessment showing that, in the period from 2008 to 2017, the plain was threatened continuously by ADD, especially during 2011–2013. The risk assessment showed that southern cities of the study area were nearly twice as likely to be struck by ADD as northern cities. Meanwhile, the eastern region had a higher frequency of severe and above-grade ADD events (once every 21 years) than the western region (once every 25.3 years). Therefore, Huainan was identified as a high-risk city and Huaibei as a low-risk city, with Suzhou and Bengbu more vulnerable to ADD than Fuyang and Bozhou. Understanding the spatial dynamics of risk in the study area can improve agricultural system resilience by optimizing planting structures and by enhancing irrigation water efficiency. This model could be used to provide support for increasing agricultural drought disaster resilience and risk management efficiency.

Description: Indoor navigation has been developing rapidly over the last few years. However, it still faces a number of challenges and practical issues. This paper proposes a novel WiFi/MEMS integration structure for indoor navigation. The two-stage structure uses the extended Kalman filter (EKF) to fuse the information from WiFi/MEMS sensors and contains attitude-determination EKF and position-tracking EKF. In the WiFi part, a partition solution called “moving partition” is originally proposed in this paper. This solution significantly reduces the computation time and enhances the performance of the traditional Weighted K-Nearest Neighbors (WKNN) method. Furthermore, the direction measurement is generated utilizing WiFi positioning results, and a “turn detection” is implemented to guarantee the effectiveness. The navigation performance of the presented integration structure has been verified through indoor experiments. The test results indicate that the proposed WiFi/MEMS solution works well. The root mean square (RMS) position error of WiFi/MEMS is 0.7926 m, which is an improvement of 20.59% and 36.60% when compared to MEMS and WiFi alone. Besides, the proposed algorithm still performs well with very few access points (AP) available and its stability has been proven.

Description: Vertically stacked hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)/graphene heterostructures present potential applications in electronic, photonic, and mechanical devices, and their interface interaction is one of the critical factors that affect the performances. In this work, the vertical h-BN/graphene heterostructures with high coverage are synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of h-BN on Ni substrates followed by segregation growth of graphene at the h-BN/Ni interfaces, which are monitored by in situ surface microscopy and surface spectroscopy. We find that h-BN overlayers can be decoupled from Ni substrates by the graphene interlayers. Furthermore, the h-BN domain boundaries exhibit a confinement effect on the graphene interlayer growth and the lower graphene domains are limited within the upper h-BN domains. This work provides new insights into the formation mechanism and interface interaction of the vertical heterostructures.

Description: The aim of this paper is to study the hygroscopic behavior of hygroscopic exothermic fiber-based materials and to obtain a better understanding of the thermal performance of these fibers during the moisture absorption process. The temperature distribution of different kinds of hygroscopic exothermic fibers in the process of moisture absorption, observed by infrared camera, demonstrated two types of heating performance of these fibers, which might be related to its hygroscopic behavior. Based on the sorption isotherms, a Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) multi-layer adsorption model was selected as the optimal moisture absorption fitting model to describe the moisture absorption process of these fibers, which illustrated that water sorption capacity and the water–fiber/water–water interaction had a significant influence on its heating performance. The net isosteric heats of sorption decreased with an increase of moisture content, which further explained the main factor affecting the heat dissipation of fibers under different moisture contents. The state of adsorbed water and water vapor interaction on the fiber surface were studied by simultaneous thermal analysis (TGA-DSC) measurement. The percentage of bound and unbound water formation at low and high humidity had a profound effect on the thermal performance of fibers. It can therefore be concluded that the content of tightly bound water a strong water–fiber interaction was the main factor affecting the heating performance of fibers at low moisture content, and the content of loosely bound water reflected that water sorption capacity was the main factor affecting the heating performance of fibers at high moisture content. This was further proven by the heat of desorption.

Description: Infrared small target detection technology has sufficient applications in many engineering fields, such as infrared early warning, infrared tracking, and infrared reconnaissance. Due to the tiny size of the infrared small target and the lack of shape and texture information, existing methods often leave residuals or miss the target. To address these issues, a novel method based on a non-overlapping patch (NOP) joint l0-l1 norm is proposed with the introduction of sparsity regularized principal component pursuit (SRPCP). The NOP model makes the patch lighter in the first place, reducing time consumption. The adoption of the l0 norm enhances the sparsity of the target, while the adoption of the l1 norm enhances the robustness of the algorithm under clutter. As a smart optimization method, SRPCP solves the NOP model fittingly and achieves stable separation of low-rank and sparse components, thereby improving detection capacity while suppressing the background efficiently. The proposed method ultimately yielded favorable detection results. Adequate experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method is competitive in terms of background suppression and true target detection with respect to state-of-the-art methods. In addition, our method also reduces the computational time.

Description: As a vital component in the valve train of internal combustion engines (ICEs), the cam/tappet pair undergoes high mechanical and thermal loads and usually works in a mixed and boundary lubrication regime. This leads to considerable friction loss and severe surface wear. Currently, the applications of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings for automotive components are becoming a promising strategy to reduce the friction and lower the wear. However, the practical performance of the coating is related to many factors, including friction coefficient, thermal properties, load conditions, and surface topography. In order to investigate these factors and successively improve the fuel efficiency and durability of the cam/tappet pair, a comprehensive multi-physics analytical model considering the mechanical, thermal and tribological properties of DLC coatings is established in this paper. Simulations are carried out for the coated as well as the uncoated cam/tappet conjunctions with different roughness at various ambient temperatures. The results show that both the fluid and asperity contact friction for the coated cam/tappet conjunction are significantly reduced due to their favourable characteristics. As a result, the friction loss of the coated cam/tappet pair is noticeably lower by almost 40% than that of the uncoated, despite a slightly higher asperity contact. In addition, the wear resistance of DLC coatings is also impressive, although the wear condition becomes progressively more severe with the increasing ambient temperature. Moreover, the roughness has complex effects on the friction and wear under different conditions.

Description: Semantic segmentation on high-resolution aerial images plays a significant role in many remote sensing applications. Although the Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) has shown great performance in this task, it still faces the following two challenges: intra-class heterogeneity and inter-class homogeneity. To overcome these two problems, a novel dual-path DCNN, which contains a spatial path and an edge path, is proposed for high-resolution aerial image segmentation. The spatial path, which combines the multi-level and global context features to encode the local and global information, is used to address the intra-class heterogeneity challenge. For inter-class homogeneity problem, a Holistically-nested Edge Detection (HED)-like edge path is employed to detect the semantic boundaries for the guidance of feature learning. Furthermore, we improve the computational efficiency of the network by employing the backbone of MobileNetV2. We enhance the performance of MobileNetV2 with two modifications: (1) replacing the standard convolution in the last four Bottleneck Residual Blocks (BRBs) with atrous convolution; and (2) removing the convolution stride of 2 in the first layer of BRBs 4 and 6. Experimental results on the ISPRS Vaihingen and Potsdam 2D labeling dataset show that the proposed DCNN achieved real-time inference speed on a single GPU card with better performance, compared with the state-of-the-art baselines.
