Description: An innovative aerial manipulator with ducted fans is proposed to achieve side-on aerial manipulation tasks in a confined environment, such as canopy sampling in dense forests. The dynamic model of the novel design is studied, and on this basis a composite controller is proposed to address the challenges of arm extension and physical interaction during the manipulation process. An adaptive controller is proposed for the aerial platform to achieve good stability and tracking performance under the manipulator motion, and an impedance controller is designed for the manipulator to ensure compliance and stability during physical contact. The experimental tests validate the effectiveness of the proposed prototype structure and controller design.

Description: Graphene shows great potential applications in functional coating, electrodes, and ultrasensitive sensors, but high-yield and scalable preparation of few-layer graphene (FLG) by mechanical exfoliation method is still a formidable challenge. In this work, a novel two-step method for high-yield preparation of FLG is developed by combining resonance ball milling and hydrothermal treatment. During the resonance ball milling process, the utilization of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a new “particle wedge” is beneficial to facilitate fragment and delamination of graphitic layers. In addition, further hydrothermal treatment can enhance ball milling product (BMP) exfoliation because of the shear force driven by the Brownian motion of various molecules at high temperature and high pressure. As expected, the two-step method can have high exfoliation efficiency up to 92% (≤10 layers). Moreover, the FLG nanosheet ink can easily achieve the formation of FLG coatings on the surface of various substrates, resulting in good electrical conductivity, which possesses potential applications in various fields including functional coating, energy storages, and electrochemical sensors, etc. Our work provides a new-fashioned strategy for mechanical large-scale production of graphene.

Description: Amaranthus tricolor has been reported to contain some antimicrobial compounds, such as alkaloids, polyphenols, and terpenoids. However, its effect on Staphylococcus aureus has been less well researched. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity and possible mechanism of action of the Amaranthus tricolor crude extract (ATCE) against S. aureus and potential application in cooked meat. The antimicrobial activity against S. aureus was assessed by disk diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determinations, and growth curve. The changes of bacterial membrane potential, intracellular pH (pHin), content of bacterial protein and DNA, and cell morphology were measured to indicate its antimicrobial mechanism of action. The effects of different concentrations of ATCE on bacterial counts, pH, and color of lean cooked pork during 6 d storage were assessed. The results showed that the diameter of inhibition zone (DIZ) and MIC of ATCE against S. aureus were 12.63 ± 0.34 to 12.94 ± 0.43 mm and 80 mg/mL, respectively. The mechanism of action of ATCE against S. aureus was associated with cell membrane depolarization, reduction of pHin, decrease of bacterial protein content, cleavage of cell DNA, and leakage of cytoplasm. Besides, ATCE resulted in a reduction of 1.02 log CFU/g from 3 log CFU/g in S. aureus-inoculated lean cooked pork. The pH values of lean cooked pork treated with ATCE did not show significant changes as the storage time increased, but there was a slight and significant decrease seen with the application of 1 and 2 MIC of ATCE. After treating with ATCE, the color of lean cooked pork showed less lightness (L*), more redness (a∗), similar yellowness (b*), stronger chroma (C*), and weaker hue angle (h*) during 6 days of storage. Therefore, these findings indicate that ATCE has antimicrobial activities against S. aureus and possesses latent energy to become a natural preservative to maintain the quality of lean cooked pork.

Description: The ubiquity of data-enabled mobile devices and wireless-enabled data applications has fostered the rapid development of wireless content caching, which is an efficient approach to mitigating cellular traffic pressure. Considering the content characteristics and real caching circumstances, a software-defined network (SDN)-based cooperative caching system is presented. First, we define a new file block library with heterogeneous content attributes [file popularity, mobile user (MU) preference, file size]. An SDN-based three-tier caching network is presented in which the base station supplies control coverage for the entire macrocell and cache helpers (CHs), MUs with cache capacities offer data coverage. Using the ‘most popular content’ and ‘largest diversity content’, a distributed cooperative caching strategy is proposed in which the caches of the MUs store the most popular contents of the file block library to mitigate the effect of MU mobility, and those of the CHs store the remaining contents in a probabilistic caching manner to enrich the content diversity and reduce the MU caching pressure. The request meet probability (RMPro) is subsequently proposed, and the optimal caching distribution of the contents in the probabilistic caching strategy is obtained via optimization. Finally, using the result of RMPro optimization, we also analyze the content retrieval delays that occur when a typical MU requests a file block or a whole file. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed caching system can achieve quasi-optimal revenue performance compared with other contrasting schemes.

Description: The original user relay (UR) selection scheme of non-orthogonal multiple access-based cooperative opportunistic multicast scheme, which realizes inter-group cooperation between two multicast groups, ignores the distribution trend of candidate UR in the cell and adopts fixed efficient relay selection range (ERSR) to select UR. It results in high UR selection ratio. Then the coverage efficiency, defined as the ratio of successfully received users to URs, is low. To tackle this problem, a range-division user relay (RDUR) selection scheme is proposed in this paper. Firstly, it divides the circular coverage range of base station into several continuous annular areas (AAs). Secondly, different ERSRs are assigned to unsuccessfully received users in different AAs. Under different ERSR assignments, the performances of UR selection ratio and coverage ratio are analyzed. Lastly, the radius set of ERSR that optimizes system coverage efficiency is used to perform UR selection. From simulation results, with different radius sets, analytical results of UR selection ratio and coverage ratio match well with their simulated ones. It is proved that ERSR allocation affects UR selection ratio and coverage ratio. With RDUR scheme, coverage efficiency increases by at least 14% and capacity efficiency has also been improved.

Description: With the arrival of the Internet of Things (IoT) era and the rise of Big Data, cloud computing, and similar technologies, data resources are becoming increasingly valuable. Organizations and users can perform all kinds of processing and analysis on the basis of massive IoT data, thus adding to their value. However, this is based on data-sharing transactions, and most existing work focuses on one aspect of data transactions, such as convenience, privacy protection, and auditing. In this paper, a data-sharing-transaction application based on blockchain technology is proposed, which comprehensively considers various types of performance, provides an efficient consistency mechanism, improves transaction verification, realizes high-performance concurrency, and has tamperproof functions. Experiments were designed to analyze the functions and storage of the proposed system.

Description: Ethylene causes faster deterioration of perishable crops during postharvest transportation and storage. The present study aimed to develop TiO2-coated nanofibers with efficient photocatalytic activities to enhance the degradation of fruit-emitted ethylene. The consecutive electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and TiO2 deposition was successfully performed to produce PAN@TiO2 nanofibers. The scanning electron microscopy results indicate the uniform distribution of TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of the PAN nanofiber. The PAN@TiO2 composite nanofibers exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for ethylene degradation under low-intensity UV light irradiation. Furthermore, a tomato fruit-ripening test confirmed the effectiveness of the PAN@TiO2 nanofibers. The PAN@TiO2 nanofibers exhibited effective ethylene degradation and slowed the color shift and softening of the tomatoes during storage. The results suggest great potential for use of the PAN@TiO2 composite nanofibers as ethylene scavenging packaging material for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Description: This paper studies a multi-user network model based on sparse code multiple access (SCMA), where both unicast and multicast services are considered. In the direct transmission scheme, the communication between the base station (BS) and the users is completed with one stage, in which the relay is inexistent. In the two-stage cooperative transmission scheme, any number of relays are placed to improve the reliability of wireless communication system. The BS broadcasts the requested message to users and relays in the first stage, and the successful relays forward the message to unsuccessful users in the second stage. To characterize the performance of these two schemes, we derive the exact and approximate expressions of average outage probability. Furthermore, to take full advantage of the cooperative diversity, an optimal power allocation and relay location strategy in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime is studied. The outage probability reaches the minimum value when the first stage occupies half of the total energy consumed. Simulation and analysis results are presented to demonstrate the performance of these two schemes. The results show that the two-stage cooperative scheme effectively reduce the average outage probability in SCMA network, especially in the high SNR region.

Description: There has been significant research on the intersection of 3D cadastre and building information modelling (BIM) over the recent years. BIM provides a multidimensional environment for capturing, curating and communicating the physical and functional aspects during a building’s lifecycle. A BIM-based solution for 3D cadastre provides a rich repository of legal and physical datasets in a common environment. The knowledge encapsulated inside a cadastral BIM model should be tapped to unlock the value of 3D cadastral information. Therefore, this article aims to develop BIM-based queries for interrogating questions about the legal ownership of properties inside multistorey buildings. These queries include identifying legal spaces that belong to a private or common property; querying physical elements that bound a legal space; and finding legal spaces that are adjacent to each other at a specific building element.

Description: A novel coaxial ducted fan aerial robot with a manipulator is proposed which can achieve some hover operation tasks in a corner environment, such as switching on and off a wall-attached button on the corner. In order to study the aerodynamic interference between the prototype and the environment when the aerial robot is hovering in the corner environment, a method for the comprehensive modeling of the prototype and corner environment based on the artificial neural network is presented. By using the CFD simulation software, the flow field of the prototype at different positions with the corner effect is analyzed. After determining the input, output and structure of the neural network model, the Adam and gradient descent algorithms are selected as the neural network training algorithms, respectively. In addition, to optimize the initial weights and biases of the neural network model, the genetic algorithm is precisely used. The three-dimensional prediction surfaces generated by the three methods of the neural network, kriging surface and the polynomial fitting are compared. The results show that the neural network has high prediction accuracy, and can be applied to the comprehensive modeling of the prototype and the corner environment.
