    Description: For a healthy oral cavity, maintaining a healthy microbiome is essential. However, data on healthy microbiomes are not sufficient. To determine the nature of the core microbiome, the oral-microbiome structure was analyzed using pyrosequencing data. Saliva samples were obtained from healthy 90-year-old participants who attended the 20-year follow-up Niigata cohort study. A total of 85 people participated in the health checkups. The study population consisted of 40 male and 45 female participants. Stimulated saliva samples were obtained by chewing paraffin wax for 5 min. The V3–V4 hypervariable regions of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene were amplified by PCR. Pyrosequencing was performed using MiSeq. Operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were assigned on the basis of a 97% identity search in the EzTaxon-e database. Using the threshold of 100% detection on the species level, 13 species were detected: Streptococcus sinensis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus salivarius, KV831974_s, Streptococcus parasanguinis, Veillonella dispar, Granulicatella adiacens, Streptococcus_uc, Streptococcus peroris, KE952139_s, Veillonella parvula, Atopobium parvulum, and AFQU_vs. These species represent potential candidates for the core make-up of the human microbiome.

    Description: Traffic congestion and lack of parking spaces in urban areas etc. may lessen the original benefits of cars, and now new ultra-small mobility concepts called personal mobility vehicles (PMVs) are receiving attention. Among them, PMVs with an inward tilting mechanism in order to avoid overturning on turning, as in motorcycles, look realistic in new, innovative traffic systems. In this study, PMVs with an active inward tilting mechanism with three wheels, double front wheels and single rear wheel, were studied regarding front inner wheel lifting phenomena, capability of obstacle avoidance and energy balance of active tilting mechanism. Based on a comprehensive study of inner wheel lifting and obstacle avoidance, PMVs with a front wheel steering system as the most realistic specification were compared on capability of obstacle avoidance with passenger cars and motorcycles with those that have current market experience, and showed better capability. Although the energy consumption of an active inward tilting mechanism might be in conflict with the energy efficiency of small PMV concepts, the energy needed to tilt PMVs was very little compared with the general energy consumption of driving. It was clarified that the new PMV concepts with inward tilting mechanism have sufficient social acceptability from both mandatory points of safety and efficiency.

    Description: The use of real textures is the optimal way to present realistic textures in a VR (Virtual Reality) experience. However, a system may require the presentation of numerous objects in a VR scene, making the use of real objects impractical. One way to address this issue is to present visual and tactile texture information simultaneously such that multiple different visual textures are associated with one tactile sensation. This tactile sensation must differ from the visual information only to the extent that the user still perceives the stimuli as consistent. This study examines the consistency required for the simultaneous presentation of visual and tactile sensations for the purpose of reducing the number of necessary real textures in future VR systems. An experiment was conducted using one-dimensional textures (i.e., line gratings), in which participants were asked whether the presented visual texture was finer or coarser than the tactile texture. The results suggest that the relative size of the “permissible range” (the range over which the difference between the visual and tactile sensation is not recognized) is correlated with the spatial period of the real texture.

    Description: Understanding the relationship between the displacement of the skin when tracing a textured object and the resulting subjective sensations is essential in designing tactile displays. Previous studies observed skin displacement using flat glass plates or uneven surfaces that do not optically interfere with finger surface observations. In contrast, no direct method for observing skin surface displacement on a texture exists. We propose a system that enables observation of the interaction between a textured surface and the skin of the finger using an index-matching technique. In the proposed system, a texture plate is immersed in oil having the same refractive index as the plate, and measurements are made when the interface is nearly optically transparent. Further, printed markers are attached to the skin of the finger, and their movements analyzed using an image-processing algorithm. The system enables spatial measurement of the skin shear and the vibration of the contact area. Evaluation experiments conducted on a 1D textured surface having a pitch of 0.6 mm verify the feasibility of the proposed system. Optical misalignment simulation results indicate that the system is slightly less accurate than type-I mechanoreceptors but can measure skin deformation on a texture and also observe it spatially and temporally.

    Description: An epithesis using osseointegrated implants as an anchorage has been proven and established as an effective means for maxillofacial rehabilitation. In this paper, we describe the basic techniques of auricular epithesis and the applications of computer technology to its execution, ranging from diagnosis to surgery, and superstructure fabrication to maintenance. The key steps of this treatment are conducting Computed Tomography (CT ) diagnosis before the operation to avoid implant penetration through the skull during the operation, embedding two implants into the section that represents the antihelix, and if possible, preserving or forming the tragus so that the edge of the epithesis is not close to the temporomandibular joint region to ensure mandibular movements are not restricted. We also discuss the applications of navigation surgery, which we are currently investigating, as well as the future prospect of augmented reality and mixed reality surgeries.
