    Description: During the planetary formation process, mutual collisions among planetesimals take place, impacting on their porosities. The outcome of these collisions depends, among other parameters, on the tensile strength of the colliding objects. In the first stage of this work, we performed impact experiments into dust samples, assembled with material analogous to that of the primitive Solar System, to obtain highly compressed samples that represent the porosities measured in chondritic meteorites. In the second stage, we obtained the tensile strengths of the compressed dust samples by the Brazilian Disc Test. We found a correlation between the tensile strength and the volume filling factor of the compressed dust samples and obtained the corresponding critical fragmentation strength in mutual collisions and its dependence on the volume filling factor. Finally, we give prescriptions for the catastrophic disruption threshold as a function of the object size, for different values of the volume filling factor.

    Description: Business-to-business (B2B) corruption, also known as private corruption, refers to unethical or illicit activities between private parties, without the direct participation of the state. Existing literature on the topic, while still limited, has taken several avenues, from qualitative studies to perception-based surveys and research experiments. Upon reviewing key studies and their findings, this article concentrates on research questions related to: business people’s perceptions on the determinants that favor B2B corruption in Romania, consequences of the phenomenon, and potential solutions. Findings are based on primary data collected through a 2019 questionnaire administered to 120 business leaders in Romania. Results confirm earlier studies’ findings that general context, malfunction of the institutions, and mentality favor B2B corruption, and that there is a lack of consensus among the business community on how to recognize and deal with various forms of B2B corruption, despite the widely spread belief that B2B corruption negatively affects business activities. Also, both internal and external solutions are considered to work against B2B corruption. The current article also opens new avenues in the literature, showing that: the probability to face B2B corruption increases with business leaders’ professional experience; preferences on how to deal with corruption cases vary based on a firm’s capital structure (domestic vs. foreign), reflecting the importance of organizational culture; and business leaders overwhelmingly want to fight against B2B corruption through both internal and external measures. Substantial progress, however, will require a proper common understanding by the private sector of what constitutes B2B corruption, including its causes, consequences, and remedies.

    Description: Northern Patagonia is one of the largest estuarine systems worldwide. It is characterized by complex geography, including islands, peninsulas, channels, and fjords. Here, the Inner Sea of Chiloé (ISC) is the largest estuarine system extending about 230 km in the meridional direction. Phytoplankton’s long-term dynamics and the main physical drivers of their variability are not well understood yet. Time-space fluctuations of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and Chlorophyll fluorescence (nFLH) within the ISC and their association with meteorological and oceanographic processes were analyzed using high resolution (1000 m) satellite data (2003–2019). Our results revealed a meridional Chl-a and nFLH gradient along the ISC, with higher concentrations north of the Desertores islands where the topography promotes a semi-closed system with estuarine characteristics yearlong. Satellite Chl-a and nFLH were characterized by asynchronous seasonal cycles (nFLH peaks in fall) that differed from the southern ISC where the maximum Chl-a and nFLH occurs in spring-summer. The adjacent coastal ocean influences the southern ISC, and thus, the Chl-a and nFLH variability correlated well with the seasonal variation of meridional winds. The northern ISC was clearly influenced by river discharges, which can bias the Chl-a retrievals, decoupling the annual cycles of Chl-a and nFLH. In situ data from a buoy in Seno Reloncaví reaffirmed this bias in satellite Chl-a and a higher correlation with nFLH, by which the construction of a local Chl-a algorithm for northern Patagonia is essential.

    Description: Background: Patellar tendon advancement (PTA) is performed for the treatment of crouch gait in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). In this study, we aimed to determine the influence of PTA in the context of single-event multilevel surgery (SEMLS) on knee joint moment and muscle forces through musculoskeletal modeling; Methods: Gait data of children with CP and crouch gait were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were included if they had a SEMLS with a PTA (PTA group, n = 18) and a SEMLS without a PTA (NoPTA group, n = 18). A musculoskeletal model was used to calculate the pre- and postoperative knee joint moments and muscle forces; Results: Knee extensor moment increased in the PTA group postoperatively (p = 0.016), but there was no statistically significant change in the NoPTA group (p 〉 0.05). The quadriceps muscle forces increased for the PTA group (p = 0.034), while there was no difference in the NoPTA group (p 〉 0.05). The hamstring muscle forces increased in the PTA group (p = 0.039), while there was no difference in the NoPTA group (p 〉 0.05); Conclusions: PTA was found to be an effective surgery for the treatment of crouch gait. It contributes to improving knee extensor moment, decreasing knee flexor moment, and enhancing the quadriceps and hamstring muscle forces postoperatively.

    Description: Dry period heat stress impairs subsequent milk production, but its impact on milk protein content and yield is inconsistent. We hypothesize that dairy cow exposure to dry period heat stress will reduce milk protein synthesis in the next lactation, potentially through modified amino acid (AA) transport and compromised mTOR signaling in the mammary gland. Cows were enrolled into heat-stressed (dry-HT, n = 12) or cooled (dry-CL, n = 12) treatments for a 46-day dry period then cooled after calving. Milk yield and composition and dry matter intake were recorded, and milk, blood, and mammary tissue samples were collected at 14, 42, and 84 days in milk (DIM) to determine free AA concentrations, milk protein fractions, and mammary AA transporter and mTOR pathway gene and protein expression. Dry matter intake did not significantly differ between treatments pre- or postpartum. Compared with dry-CL cows, milk yield was decreased (32.3 vs. 37.7 ± 1.6 kg/day) and milk protein yield and content were reduced in dry-HT cows by 0.18 kg/day and 0.1%. Further, dry-HT cows had higher plasma concentrations of glutamic acid, phenylalanine, and taurine. Gene expression of key AA transporters was upregulated at 14 and 42 DIM in dry-HT cows. Despite minor changes in mTOR pathway gene expression, the protein 4E-BP1 was upregulated in dry-HT cows at 42 DIM whereas Akt and p70 S6K1 were downregulated. These results indicate major mammary metabolic adaptations during lactation after prior exposure to dry period heat stress.
