Description: The importance of a number of techniques (including 1H and 13C NMR, XRD and IR) in exploring the important catalytic properties of synthetic and natural clays is described. A clear distinction is observed between proven catalytically-active clays (e.g. Al-exchanged) and those which are generally less effective (e.g. Na-exchanged). 13C NMR spectroscopy is used to identify directly products formed within the interlayer regions, and temperature-controlled powder XRD serves as a useful tool for identifying whether or not intercalation occurs under variously defined conditions. High-pressure XRD is used to verify the formation of different products during reaction.

Notes: An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic study is presented for an industrial catalyst surface, which is in its active form only accessible after reaction under technical conditions. A high pressure-high temperature reactor was attached to a surface analysis system. It allowed rapid transfer of a sample between the reaction environment and the UHV required for surface analysis. The active phase was identified as a ternary iron potassium oxide. No evidence was found for the previously suggested presence of a binary potassium hydroxide or carbonate phase in solid or liquid form. A new model of the active catalyst is proposed.

Notes: Na—Y zeolite was cation exchanged with Ru and tested in ammonia synthesis at atmospheric pressure. Activities up to ∼10% of the commercial iron catalyst scaled by the active surface area were observed. Characterization of the zeolites with XPS was complemented with reference thermal desorption spectroscopy data on a polycrystalline Ru metal surface. The catalysts showed high thermal stability in in situ reduction-oxidation cycles. The chemical state of the Ru will be discussed. From shift measurements the Ru is metallic in the active state, but line shape arguments point to a cluster-like particle morphology. The location of the Ru inside or outside the zeolite framework will be discussed.

Notes: The techniques of XPS and UPS measurements with Pt black catalysts as well as reasonable data processing are discussed. The surface of Pt contains carbon and oxygen impurities in amounts of 15%-20% each. The use of various sensitivity factors does not influence the conclusions drawn on purity. Oxygen 1s and C 1s line fitting has been done on a self-consistent basis. Of various chemical O and C species, three-dimensional carbon islands and water and/or H2O attached to Pt sites predominate. These latter entities are well detected also by UPS. The usefulness of difference XP and UP spectra in distinguishing chemical entities is pointed out.

Notes: In the last fifteen years the necessity for efficient environmental protection has become generally accepted. However, before practical measures can be taken, a comprehensive assessment of the present environmental situation should be made, taking into consideration the risks involved in as well as the positive effects of any planned environmental changes - whether natural or man made. This clearly calls for close cooperation between the various scientific disciplines. For example, the treatment of exhaust fumes from motor vehicles has been of primary importance in measures taken to restrict the recent damage caused to woodland areas. The introduction of 3-Way-Catalyst technology has been regarded as a viable countermeasure. The following report is intended to describe a method for examining some side effects of catalyst usage. Accordingly, the chemical composition of microparticles emitted from combustion motors through the use of catalysts will be examined and some possible changes in the environment caused by such particles will be briefly considered. As in the area of research into catalysts for industrial synthesis a knowledge of the surface structure of such particles, i.e. the boundary layer between emission product and environment, is necessary in the investigation into their effects. Consequently, a surface sensitive technique from solid state physics, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS or ESCA) has found novel use in the area of environmental analysis. In the following report emphasis will be placed on the description of measurement techniques and the interpretation of the results obtained. After a critical consideration of the experimental methods, examples from two different series of measurements on diesel and Otto motors equipped with soot filters or 3-way-catalysts respectively, will be given. Hopefully, this report will also stimulate establishment of the use of EPS in environmental research techniques.
