    Description: Soil leaching is an effective remediation technique using agents to leach the target pollutants from the soil. However, the dynamics and mechanisms for leaching of Cr and other non-pollutant metals from Cr-contaminated soils are not yet well understood. Here, column leaching experiments were conducted to determine the effect of hydrochloric acid (HCl), citric acid (CA), and oxalic acid (OX) on the leaching of Cr, as well as of Ca, Mg, Fe, and Mn, from a soil contaminated by a Cr slag heap. Acid leaching decreased soil pH and enhanced the mobility of all the surveyed metals. Leaching dynamics varied with both metals and acids. OX had the highest removal rates for Cr, Fe, Mn, and Mg, but had the poorest ability to leach Ca. HCl leached the largest amount of Ca, while CA leached similar amounts of Mg and Mn to OX, and similar amounts of Fe and Cr to HCl. Cr in the leachates was correlated with Ca, Mg, Fe, and Mn. Cr mainly interacted with soil mineral components and showed a punctate distribution in soil particles. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses showed soil mineralogical and morphological properties were differently altered after leaching by different acids. Complexation of Cr(III), competitive desorption, and reduction of Cr(VI) make significant contribution to Cr leaching by organic acids. In conclusion, OX can be applied in leaching remediation of Cr-contaminated soil, but the concomitant removal of other non-targeted metals should be taken into account because of the loss of soil minerals and fertility.

    Description: In this paper, a soft fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor was constructed of a rubber strip, FBGs and steel plates, which exhibits the advantages of high precision and a small size. A series of FBGs was uniformly pasted on a flexible rubber strip which can monitor the slope deformation by measuring the bending deformation of the rubber strip. Most notably, this sensor can be used to monitor horizontal displacement in the subsurface of the slope model. The relationships among the bending angle of the rubber strip, the strain of the rubber strip, and the subsurface deformation of the slope model were established. In addition, the subsurface deformation of the slope model can be obtained by the FBG strain sensor monitoring. Since a rigid-flexible structure was formed by uniformly pasting a series of steel plates on the other side of the rubber strip, the sensitivity of the FBG strain sensor was improved to be 1.5425 nm/°. The measurement results verify that the FBG strain sensor shows good performance, and the model test results demonstrate that the FBG strain sensor can be used for monitoring the subsurface deformation of the slope model.

    Description: The high interior heterogeneity of land surface covers in high-resolution image of coastal cities makes classification challenging. To meet this challenge, a Multi-Scale Superpixels-based Classification method using Optimized Spectral–Spatial features, denoted as OSS-MSSC, is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, the multi-scale superpixels are firstly generated to capture the local spatial structures of the ground objects with various sizes. Then, the normalized difference vegetation index and extend multi-attribute profiles are introduced to extract the spectral–spatial features from the multi-spectral bands of the image. To reduce the redundancy of the spectral–spatial features, the crossover-based search algorithm is utilized for feature optimization. The pre-classification results at each single scale are, therefore, obtained based on the optimized spectral–spatial features and random forest classifier. Finally, the ultimate classification is generated via the majority voting of those pre-classification results in each scale. Experimental results on the Gaofen-2 image of Qingdao and WorldView-2 image of Hong Kong, China confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experiments verify that the OSS-MSSC method not only works effectively on the homogeneous regions, but also is able to preserve the small local spatial structures in the high-resolution remote sensing images of coastal cities.
