Notes: The pentacyclic triterpenes 1a, b and 2a, b are isolated from extracts of Euphorbia mellifera Arr. Their structures, determined by X-ray analysis, are supported in part by MS, NMR, and IR data. The skeleton differs from that of representatives of the lupane or hopane class by (i) an unusual arrangement of the substituents in the cyclopentane ring E, the Me group being on C(19) and the i-Pr group in an angular position on C(17), and (ii) a cis D/E ring junction. We propose to name Die unknown pentacyclic parent ‘madeirane’, thus 1a, b and 2a, b are D-friedomadeir-14-ene and D:C-friedomadeir-7-ene derivatives. The biosynthesis of these compounds may be rationalized via ‘spirodammaranol’-cation intermediates 5 and 5′ and madeiranol cation 6, as outlined in Scheme 2.

Notes: The reaction of amide and amidate anions 2 with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride (1) under different reaction conditions gives rise to the total or partial reduction of the acyl halide to p-toluenesulfinic acid (5) and acylation compounds in variable amounts depending on the crowding at the anionic center. This indicates that a Single-Electron Transfer (SET) mechanism is involved in the reactions of 1 with anions. Unpaired electron species are detected by ESR in the course of the reactions.

Notes: Inverse gas chromatography technique was applied to the study of the miscibility of the system polystyrene/poly(methyl vinyl ether) (PS/PMVE) over a temperature range (75 - 155°C) including the phase separation temperature. This temperature was measured taking into account the retention diagrams of the PS/PMVE system with several probes, the comparison of the probe retention volumes in the blend with the algebraic average retention volumes of the pure homopolymers, and the variation of interaction parameter χ′23 with temperature within the temperature range investigated. According to these criteria, the phase separation temperature of the PS/PMVE (50/50 by wt.) system is within the temperature range of 115 - 120°C.

Notes: The polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by Ce4+ methanol redox system was studied in aqueous solution of nitric acid at 15°C. The polymerization was initiated by primary radicals formed from Ce4+/alcohol complex. Poly(methyl methacrylate) chains containing the alcohol residue were obtained. Variations in the temperatuare and concentration of the components of the redox system allowed the control of the rate of polymerization and molecular weight of the polymer. The concentration of the hydroxyl end groups in the poly(methyl methacrylate) of low molecular weight was determined by titration and by spectrometric method.

Notes: ---The triphenypyrylium tetrafluoroborate (TPT)-sensitized reactions of several terpene donor molecules, including sabinene (1), α-phellandrene (4), α-terpinene (5) and γ-terpinene (6) give rise to significantly different products than reactions induced by other electron-transfer sensitizers, such as 1,4-dicyanobenzene (DCB). The divergent reactions require decidedly different key intermediates; the products obtained with TPT can be explained by dissociative recombination of the intermediate radical-radical cation pair in the triplet state, generating donor-derived biradicals.

Notes: The pharmacological activity of rac-ketoprofen and its enantiomers was investigated in vitro using different cellular models. The effect of these compounds on arachidonic acid metabolism was assessed by measuring the inhibition of prostanoid generation under the action of several agonists. Thus, we have evaluated the inhibition of (1) thromboxane B2 synthesis in rabbit platelets and human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), (2) prostaglandin E2 synthesis in three cultured cells, namely human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), human keratinocytes, and mouse macrophage-like P388D1 cells. The IC50 values found for (+)-(S)-ketoprofen were in the range between 0.1 nM and 0.8 μM, being slightly lower in all models than those found for rac-ketoprofen (0.4 nM-3 μM). On the other hand, (-)-(R)-ketoprofen showed inhibition of cyclooxygenase only at concentrations two or three orders of magnitude higher than those required for the (+)-(S) enantiomer. These results, obtained with cell types of relevance for inflammatory processes and with compounds of high optical purity, demonstrate that the prostanoid biosynthesis inhibition caused by the drug rac-ketoprofen is exclusively due to its dextrorotatory enantiomer. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: The existence of interchange reactions in a poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate)/poly(bisphenol-A carbonate) blend (PEN/PC) has been proven by means of solubility tests, DSC and FTIR and NMR spectroscopies. In addition, DSC results reveal that these interchange reactions are responsible for the miscibilization of the initially immiscible system.

Notes: In this work, we have studied the effect of amplifying different alleles involved in the threonine biosynthesis on the amino acid production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The genes used were wild-type HOM3, HOM2, HOM6, THR1, and THR4, and two mutant alleles of HOM3 (namely HOM3-R2 and HOM3-R6), that code for feedback-insensitive aspartate kinases. The results show that only the amplification of the HOM3 alleles leads to threonine and, in some instances, to homoserine overproduction. In terms of the regulation of the pathway, the data indicate that the main control is exerted by inhibition of the aspartate kinase and that, probably, a second and less important regulation takes place at the level of the homoserine kinase, the THR1 gene product. However, amplification of THR1 in two related Hom3-R2 strains does not increase the amount of threonine but, in one of them, it does induce accumulation of more homoserine. This result probably reflects differences between these strains in some undetermined genetic factor/s related with threonine metabolism. In general, the data indicate that the common laboratory yeast strains are genetically rather heterogeneous and, thus, extrapolation of conclusions must be done carefully. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: We investigated the effects of hydroquinone monomethyl ether concentration and film thickness upon the thermal polymerization of acrylic acid on low-density polyethylene. The thermal polymerization of acrylic acid on low-density polyethylene depended on the concentration of hydroquinone monomethyl ether inhibitor. It was a free-radical reaction with initiation on the film surface and then proceeding to the bulk matrix. The process was not controlled by monomer diffusion for the range of film thickness of 90-200 μm. It became a diffusion-controlled process at higher film thicknesses ( 〉 200 μm). A film layer of up to 100 μm was proposed as the limiting thickness for a diffusion-free process. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
