    Description: Land-cover monitoring is one of the core applications of remote sensing. Monitoring and mapping changes in the distribution of agricultural land covers provide a reliable source of information that helps environmental sustainability and supports agricultural policies. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can contribute considerably to this monitoring effort. The first objective of this research is to extend the use of time series of polarimetric data for land-cover classification using a decision tree classification algorithm. With this aim, RADARSAT-2 (quad-pol) and Sentinel-1 (dual-pol) data were acquired over an area of 600 km2 in central Spain. Ten polarimetric observables were derived from both datasets and seven scenarios were created with different sets of observables to evaluate a multitemporal parcel-based approach for classifying eleven land-cover types, most of which were agricultural crops. The study demonstrates that good overall accuracies, greater than 83%, were achieved for all of the different proposed scenarios and the scenario with all RADARSAT-2 polarimetric observables was the best option (89.1%). Very high accuracies were also obtained when dual-pol data from RADARSAT-2 or Sentinel-1 were used to classify the data, with overall accuracies of 87.1% and 86%, respectively. In terms of individual crop accuracy, rapeseed achieved at least 95% of a producer’s accuracy for all scenarios and that was followed by the spring cereals (wheat and barley), which achieved high producer’s accuracies (79.9%-95.3%) and user’s accuracies (85.5% and 93.7%).

    Description: We present here a review of the latest results on the spatially-resolved analysis of the stellar populations and ionized gas of disk-dominated galaxies based on Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) data. CALIFA is an ongoing integral field spectroscopy (IFS) survey of galaxies in the Local Universe (0.005 〈 z 〈 0.03) that has already obtained spectroscopic information up to \(\sim\)2.5 \(r_e\) with a spatial resolution better than \(\sim\)1 kpc for a total number of more than 600 galaxies of different morphological types, covering the color-magnitude diagram up to M\(_{\rm R}〈-\)18 mag. With nearly 2000 spectra obtained for each galaxy, CALIFA offers one of the best IFU datasets to study the star formation histories and chemical enrichment of galaxies. In this article, we focus on the main results from the analysis of the oxygen abundances based on the study of ionized gas in \HII\ regions and individual spaxels and their relation to the global properties of galaxies, using an updated/revised dataset with more galaxies and ionized regions. In summary, we have confirmed previous published results indicating that: (1) the \mz\ relation does not present a secondary relation to the star formation rate, when the abundance is measured at the effective radius; (2) the oxygen abundance presents a strong correlation with the stellar surface density (\Sz\ relation); (3) the oxygen abundance profiles present three well-defined regimes: (i) an overall negative radial gradient between 0.5 and 2 \(r_e\), with a characteristic slope of \(\alpha_{O/H}\) \(\sim\)\(-\)0.1 dex/\(r_e\); (ii) a universal flattening beyond \(>\)2 \(r_e\); and (iii) an inner drop at \(〈\)0.5 \(r_e\) that depends on mass; (4) the presence of bending in the surface brightness profile of disk galaxies is not clearly related to either the change in the shape of the oxygen abundance profile or the properties of the underlying stellar population. All of these results indicate that disk galaxies present an overall inside-out growth, with chemical enrichment and stellar mass growth tightly correlated and dominated by local processes and limited effects of radial mixing or global outflows. However, clear deviations are shown with respect to this simple scenario, which affect the abundance profiles in both the innermost and outermost regions of galaxies.

    Description: Cancer represents a major worldwide public health problem. While significant advances in different fronts are being made to combat the disease, the development of new metal-based drugs with cytotoxic capabilities is of high relevance. This work presents a heterobimetallic molecule comprising two moieties with a structure similar to Casiopeina II-gly. One of them has a cyclotetravanadate anion that functions as an inorganic bridge coordinating two Cu (II) atoms resulting in a hexanuclear [Cu(phen)(Gly)-µ2-V4O12-Cu(phen)(Gly)]2− complex, which is counterbalanced by two isolated [Cu(phen)(Gly)(H2O)]1+ cations. Ten water molecules arranged in two sets of five-member chains also play an essential role in the 3D supramolecular structure of the compound. The molecule was designed to provide Cu and V, two metals with proven anticancer capabilities in the same molecular structure. The compound was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis; visible, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopies; 51V Nuclear Magnetic Resonance; cyclic voltammetry; and monocrystalline X-ray diffraction. The structural, spectroscopic, and electronic properties of the compound were calculated through the density functional theory (DFT) using the Minnesota functional M06-2X and the Def2TZVP/LANL2TZ(f) basis sets with an effective core potential (ECP) for metals. Noncovalent interactions were analyzed using a natural population analysis (NPA) and Hirshfeld surfaces. The compound upon dissociation provides two metals that can interact with important biological targets in a variety of cancer cell models.

    Description: The doping and crystallization of the molecular semiconductor formed from the magnesium phthalocyanine (MgPc) and 1-(4-Methoxyphenyl)-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-5-phenylhepta-3,4-dienedioic (MTPDA) acid was carried out in this work. The crystals obtained were characterized by using transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, and X-Ray diffraction (XRD), to later evaluate their optical behavior. Raman, IR, and UV–Vis results indicate that the MgPc has been doped with the MTPDA. A uniform material layer with particles is observed as a result of a two-stage process, nucleation and growth. The polycrystalline films are constituted by a mixture of α and β phases with crystalline sizes of ~7 nm, 14 nm, and 20 nm average sizes. The films exhibit a preferred orientation along the [001]. The MTPDA doping does not have an important effect on the molecule planar distances indicating that the MTPDA molecule is among the equivalent MgPc plane direction. A transparent region with a minimum at 483 nm is observed, also a B-band at 337 nm and a Q-band transition with a high-energy peak around 639 nm, and a low energy peak around 691 nm.

    Description: In recent years, indoor localization systems based on fingerprinting have had significant advances yielding high accuracies. Those approaches often use information about channel communication, such as channel state information (CSI) and received signal strength (RSS). Nevertheless, these features have always been employed separately. Although CSI provides more fine-grained physical layer information than RSS, in this manuscript, a methodology for indoor localization fusing both features from a single access point is proposed to provide a better accuracy. In addition, CSI amplitude information is processed to remove high variability information that can negatively influence location estimation. The methodology was implemented and validated in two scenarios using a single access point located in two different positions and configured in 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency bands. The experiments show that the methodology yields an average error distance of about 0.1 m using the 5 GHz band and a single access point.

    Description: The successful integration of few-layer thick hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) into devices based on two-dimensional materials requires fast and non-destructive techniques to quantify their thickness. Optical contrast methods and Raman spectroscopy have been widely used to estimate the thickness of two-dimensional semiconductors and semi-metals. However, they have so far not been applied to two-dimensional insulators. In this work, we demonstrate the ability of optical contrast techniques to estimate the thickness of few-layer hBN on SiO2/Si substrates, which was also measured by atomic force microscopy. Optical contrast of hBN on SiO2/Si substrates exhibits a linear trend with the number of hBN monolayers in the few-layer thickness range. We also used bandpass filters (500–650 nm) to improve the effectiveness of the optical contrast methods for thickness estimations. We also investigated the thickness dependence of the high frequency in-plane E2g phonon mode of atomically thin hBN on SiO2/Si substrates by micro-Raman spectroscopy, which exhibits a weak thickness-dependence attributable to the in-plane vibration character of this mode. Ab initio calculations of the Raman active phonon modes of atomically thin free-standing crystals support these results, even if the substrate can reduce the frequency shift of the E2g phonon mode by reducing the hBN thickness. Therefore, the optical contrast method arises as the most suitable and fast technique to estimate the thickness of hBN nanosheets.

    Description: The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) includes estimates of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) as a series of Climate Data Records (CDRs) derived from satellite data. The C3S Surface Albedo (SA) v1.0 CDR is composed of observations from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRR) (1981–2005), and VEGETATION sensors onboard Satellites for the Observation of the Earth (SPOT/VGT) (1998–2014) and Project for Onboard Autonomy satellite (PROBA-V) (2014–2020), and will continue with Sentinel-3 (from 2020 onwards). The goal of this study is to assess the uncertainties associated with the C3S PROBA-V SA v1.0 product, with a focus on the transition from SPOT/VGT to PROBA-V. The methodology followed the good practices recommended by the Land Product Validation sub-group (LPV) of the Working Group on Calibration and Validation (WGCV) of the Committee on Earth Observing Satellites (CEOS) for the validation of satellite-derived global albedo products. Several performance criteria were evaluated, including an intercomparison with National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) MCD43A3 C6 products. C3S PROBA-V SA v1.0 and MCD43A3 C6 showed similar completeness but had higher fractions of missing data than C3S SPOT/VGT SA v1.0. C3S PROBA-V SA v1.0 showed similar precision (~1%) to MCD43A3 C6, improving the results of SPOT/VGT SA v1.0 (2–3%), but C3S PROBA-V SA v1.0 provided residual noise in the near-infrared (NIR). Good spatio-temporal continuity between C3S PROBA-V and SPOT/VGT SA v1.0 products was found with a mean bias between ±2%. The comparison with MCD43A3 C6 showed positive mean biases (5%, 8%, and 12% for visible, NIR and total shortwave, respectively). The accuracy assessment with ground measurements showed a median error of 18.4% with systematic overestimation (positive bias of 11.5%). The percentage of PROBA-V retrievals complying with the C3S target requirements was 28.6%.

    Description: Climate change entails increasingly frequent, longer, and more severe droughts, especially in some regions, such as the Mediterranean region. Under these water scarcity conditions, agricultural yields of important crops, such as garlic, are threatened. Finding better adapted cultivars to low water availability environments could help mitigate the negative agricultural and economic impacts of climate change. For this purpose, plant phenotyping protocols based on remote-sensing technologies, such as thermal imaging, can be particularly valuable since they facilitate screening and selection of germplasm in a cost-effective manner, covering a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. In this study, the use of a thermal index known as the crop water stress index (CWSI) was tested as a predictor of bulb biomass and for the assessment of inter-cultivar variability of five garlic cultivars in response to a gradient of soil volumetric water contents (VWCs). Three experimental assays, one in the 2018 season and two in 2019, covering a wide range of water availability levels were carried out. Different linear models were developed, with CWSI and VWCs as continuous predictors of bulb biomass, and the factor cultivar as a categorical predictor. The results support the existence of inter-cultivar variation in terms of sensitivity to water availability. The most productive cultivars under favorable conditions were also the most sensitive to water availability. In contrast, the cultivars with lower bulb production potential displayed lower sensitivity to water availability and higher stability across experimental assays. The results also support that CWSI, which was sensitive to inter-cultivar variability, is a good predictor of garlic bulb biomass. Therefore, CWSI can be a valuable tool for garlic phenotyping and cultivar screening.

    Description: According to the different phases at which titanium dioxide (TiO2) crystallizes, previous studies have shown that anatase is more efficient for photocatalysis than rutile. Nowadays, the synergetic effect is well-accepted between anatase and rutile as having an effect in increasing performance in photocatalysis. In the present work, control over the anatase/rutile ratio was performed in three experimental steps. Initially, amorphous-anatase TiO2 powders were synthesized by the sol-gel method. For the crystallization of anatase, the powders were annealed at 250 °C for 2 h in ambient atmosphere. The final step was performed by using different annealing times, ranging from 35 up to 200 min at a temperature of 475 °C. The powders were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, UV–VIS, SEM and TEM techniques to determine the crystalline phase, band gap, morphology, and elemental composition, respectively. It was possible to control the anatase/rutile ratio on the nanostructured TiO2 powders from 100% of anatase until a complete transformation to rutile through the variation of the annealing time. The band gap calculated using the Tauc’s model was found in the range of 2.56 to 2.93 eV. However, no direct relationship between the anatase/rutile ratio, and the band gap was found.
