Notes: A new crystal bender for dispersive X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (XAFS) has been built and its performance characterized. The bender employs an adjustable four-point bending mechanism and a contoured crystal, which makes it possible to produce an excellent approximation of the ideal elliptical bend from 8000 to 20000 eV with a single such Si (220) crystal. With the near-elliptical optics, it is possible to achieve a focus size of 175 μm with a 5 mm source and simultaneously to achieve a useful bandpass of 700 at 9000, 1200 at 11500 and 2000 eV at 18000 eV. The upper limit on the resolution, which is dictated by the finite source size in this configuration, is 2–5 eV for all of the energy ranges studied.

Notes: The design and evaluation of an energy-dispersive spectrometer to measure X-ray absorption spectra rapidly using a synchrotron-radiation source is presented. The method employs a cylindrically bent triangular crystal to focus and disperse a quasi-parallel polychromatic X-ray beam onto the sample. The beam passing through the sample then diverges towards an X-ray detector where beam position can be correlated to energy. Both concentrated and dilute samples were measured on X-ray film and with an electronic linear photodiode array detector and the data analysed to determine the resolution obtained and the data quality. This method is shown to provide an efficient way to obtain high-quality EXAFS and absorption-edge data and should permit kinetic studies to be performed on small samples with good counting statistics. The method should find application in the fields of biophysics, chemistry and materials science.

Notes: In the conventional model of condensed matter increasing numbers of defects break down the order and ultimately convert perfect periodic crystals into aperiodic glasses. Local structure probes of a variety of materials with non-stoichiometric compositions, multiple degenerate ordering modes, or other symmetry breaking factors identify multiple ordered arrangements of atoms that render the materials heterogeneous on the nanometer scale. While exerting apparently negligible effects on bulk properties, this heterogeneity or phase separation does influence correlated or collective properties such as magnetism and phase stability.

Notes: Waste management of nuclear fuel represents one of the major environmental concerns of the decade. To recycle fissile valuable materials, intimate knowledge of complexation mechanisms involved in the solvent extraction processes is indispensable. Evolution of the actinide coordination sphere of AnO2(NO3)2TBP-type complexes (An = U, Np, Pu; TBP = tributylphosphate) with the actinide valence state have been probed by XAS at the metal LIII edge. Dramatic changes in the actinide coordination sphere appeared when the An(VI) metal is reduced to An(IV). However, no significant evolution in the actinide environment has been noticed across the series UO22+, NpO22+ and PuO22+.
