Notes: Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and wide-angle neutron scattering (WANS) measurements on pumice, an amorphous natural aluminosilicate used as support for metals in the preparation of catalysts, are reported. The SANS spectrum indicates the presence of a broad size distribution of pores and the absence of volume fractality. Surface fractality, however, cannot be ruled out. The structure of pumice, suggested by the pair-correlation function derived from the WANS spectrum and simulated by a random-network structure model, is very similar to that of vitreous silica, consisting mainly of SiO4−4 tetrahedra interconnected by bridging O atoms with additional local disorder generated by the replacement, on average, of one in ten Si atoms by aluminium.

Notes: Abstract We correct for the effect of temperature induced frequency shifts on the observed dynamic structure factor S(q,ω) and find that the intrinsic behavior for non-superfluid4He is remarkably similar to that for other noble-gas fluids.

Notes: Abstract The inelastic scattering of thermal neutrons from liquid helium at 1.2 K has been measured for wave-vector transfers in the range 6.0 ≤ Q ≤ 12.0 »−1. Oscillations in the widths of the scattered-neutron distributions as a function of Q are observed to persist at least up to 12.0 »−1. A simple physical model suggests that these oscillations, which reflect the presence of final-state interactions and interference effects, have their origin in similar oscillations which occur in the He-He scattering cross section. Detailed measurements at Q = 10.0»−1 show no evidence of a well-defined condensate peak, and calculations suggest that Q values in the range 50–100 »−1 or greater may be required to observe a separate condensate component in the line shape. A method is developed for eliminating a major part of the effects of final-state interactions from the Doppler part of the distributions, and the corrected data at Q = 10.0 »−1 are analyzed to determine the momentum distribution in liquid helium at 1.2 K. The resulting distribution is found to be non-Gaussian with a well-defined high-momentum tail. The result is compared with the momentum distribution obtained recently by Mook from thermal neutron time-of-flight data near Q = 15 »−1 and with theoretical calculations of McMillan and of Kalos.

Notes: Abstract We present a unified description of the dynamic response of superfluid 4 He using perturbation theory. We show that the characteristic features of the 4 He inelastic neutron scattering spectra at T∼1 K can be fully described by considering only density fluctuations. We also discuss how the response changes when the temperature is raised through the superfluid phase to the normal-fluid phase, and we argue that these changes principally reflect the behavior expected because of the Bose statistics obeyed by all the 4 He atoms rather than being effects of the depletion of the Bose condensate.

Notes: Abstract We determine the behavior of the phonon excitations in liquid4He, covering both the normal and superfluid phase, for a range of temperatures T (1〈T〈4.2 K), wave numbers q (0.1〈q〈2.2 Å−1) and pressures p (0〈p〈25 bars), by means of a numerical fitting procedure based on the effective eigenmode description of the density correlation function. We find that the q, p and T dependence of all inelastic neutron scattering data can be well described by using only one adjustable parameter, the damping rate of the momentum fluctuations. We establish that there is a close similarity between classical liquids, normal-fluid4He and superfluid4He. We observe, for all q-values, a marked change in the damping rate of the momentum fluctuations as one passes through the superfluid-transition temperature Tλ. For the roton excitations, this results in a heavily damped (overdamped at p=20 bars) mode in the normal phase, in contrast to the propagating mode observed in the superfluid phase. The change in damping rate is found to occur predominantly in a small temperature region just below Tλ, for all q-values. We do not find any evidence for the sudden appearance of the predicted “renormalized single-particle” excitations as one enters the superfluid phase. We argue that the full dispersion curve of the phonon-maxonroton excitations can be understood for all temperatures and pressures in terms of the damping rate of the momentum fluctuations, whereas the rapid changes in this damping rate near Tλ can be viewed as a direct consequence of the Bose symmetry requirements on the4He-wavefunction.
