Notes: Abstract The volume average of the strain tensor in a body moving in an inverse-square force field is evaluated. The calculation is carried out assuming the satellite to be an isotropic elastic body whose center of mass moves in a planar orbit. An approximate expression, in terms of its volume and elastic properties, is presented for the strain energy in the satellite. Using this expression the equation of planar librational motion is written explicity. This equation is discussed for both circular and elliptic orbits and is modified to include the effects of energy dissipation in the body. It is shown that the concept of Adiabatic Invariants allows one to analyze the influence of slow changes in the material volume and elasticity.

Notes: Summary There are three types of X-linked cataracts recorded in Mendelian Inheritance in Man (McKusick 1988): congenital total, with posterior sutural opacities in heterozygotes: congenital, with microcornea or slight microphthalmia; and the cataract-dental syndrome or Nance-Horan (NH) syndrome. To identify a DNA marker close to the gene responsible for the NH syndrome, linkage analysis on 36 members in a three-generation pedigree including seven affected males and nine carrier females was performed using 31 DNA markers. A LOD score of 1.662 at 0=0.16 was obtained with probe 782 from locus DXS85 on Xp22.2–p22.3. Negative LOD scores were found at six loci on the short arm, one distal to DXS85, five proximal, and six probes spanning the long arm were highly negative. These results make the assignment of the locus for NH to the distal end of the short arm of the X chromosome likely.

Notes: Abstract  We examined in the field the photosynthetic utilization of fluctuating light by six neotropical rainforest shrubs of the family Rubiaceae. They were growing in three different light environments: forest understory, small gaps, and clearings. Gas exchange techniques were used to analyse photosynthetic induction response, induction maintenance during low-light periods, and lightfleck (simulated sunfleck) use efficiency (LUE). Total daily photon flux density (PFD) reaching the plants during the wet season was 37 times higher in clearings than in the understory, with small gaps exhibiting intermediate values. Sunflecks were more frequent, but shorter and of lower intensity in the understory than in clearings. However, sunflecks contributed one-third of the daily PFD in the understory. Maximum rates of net photosynthesis, carboxylation capacity, electron transport, and maximum stomatal conductance were lower in understory species than in species growing in small gaps or clearings, while the reverse was true for the curvature factor of the light response of photosynthesis. No significant differences were found in the apparent quantum yield. The rise of net photosynthesis during induction after transfer from low to high light varied from a hyperbolic shape to a sigmoidal increase. Rates of photosynthetic induction exhibited a negative exponential relationship with stomatal conductance in the shade prior to the increase in PFD. Leaves of understory species showed the most rapid induction and remained induced longer once transferred to the shade than did leaves of medium- or high-light species. LUE decreased rapidly with increasing lightfleck duration and was affected by the induction state of the leaf. Fully induced leaves exhibited LUEs up to 300% for 1-s lightflecks, while LUE was below 100% for 1–80 s lightflecks in uninduced leaves. Both induced and uninduced leaves of understory species exhibited higher LUE than those of species growing in small gaps or clearings. However, most differences disappeared for lightflecks 10 s long or longer. Thus, understory species, which grew in a highly dynamic light environment, had better capacities for utilization of rapidly fluctuating light than species from habitats with higher light availability.

Notes: Abstract Specimens of a stainless steel (20%Cr, 25%Ni stabilized with niobium and also containing 0.9% Mn and 0.6% Si) implanted with lanthanum to a dose of 1017 ion cm−2 , together with unimplanted specimens, have been oxidized in carbon dioxide at 825° C for times up to 9735 h. Transverse sections through the oxide scales formed on the respective specimens have been studied by analytical electron microscopy. After this exposure the scale on the unimplanted 20/25/Nb stainless steel consists of an outer, large-grained, spinel layer, a middle fine-grained Cr2O3 layer and an inner, discontinuous silicon rich, niobium and chromium bearing, amorphous layer. The main effects of the lanthanum implantation are to improve oxidation resistance and maintain scale adherence during thermal cycling. The microstructural changes in the scale formed on the lanthanum implanted 20/25/Nb steel include finer Cr2O3 oxide grains and an intermediate region between the outer spinel and inner Cr2O3 layers comprised of both oxides. The lanthanum concentrates in this region and appears to act as a marker due to its low diffusivity. Mechanisms of scale development on the 20/25/Nb stainless Red and the influence of lanthanum implantation are discussed.

Notes: Summary A model of theβ 2-adrenergic receptor binding site is built from the primary structure of the receptor, experimental evidence for key binding residues and analogy with a homologous protein of partially determined structure. It is suggested that residues Trp-109, Thr-110 and Asp-113 are involved in ligand binding. Noradrenaline is successfully docked into this model, and the results of an INDO molecular orbital calculation on the complex indicate that a charge transfer interaction between Trp-109 and noradrenaline is possible.

Notes: Summary Point mass systems in which the interaction matrix is a symmetric circulant occur in a wide variety of physical situations. In many cases also the interaction matrix, while not being a circulant, may differ only slightly from one. The dynamics of both exact and near-circulant systems are analysed in the present paper. In particular the influence of a perturbative interaction on an exact system, which is intrinsically degenerate, is studied using an action-angle formulation. A specific application of interest is presented.

Notes: Summary An Orcein staining method has been developed which stains mature and immature leukocytes in blood films and bone-marrow smears. Two different patterns of staining are obtained depending on whether staining is or is not preceded by oxidation. In the latter case, all granulocytes and some monocytes show granular reddish-brown cytoplasmic staining. When prior oxidation is used, the staining is in the form of fine grey or black cytoplasmic granules. All lymphocytes, by both techniques, are negative. It is suggested that Orcein stains sulphated mucosubstances, possibly chondroitin sulphate, which in granulocytes is concentrated in their primary granules.
