Description: It has been demonstrated that composites are lightweight, fatigue resistant and easily melded, a seemingly attractive alternative to metals. However, there has been no widespread switch from metals to composites in the automotive sector. This is because there are a number of technical issues relating to the use of composite materials that still need to be resolved including accurate material characterization, manufacturing and joining process. The total of 36 specimens have been fabricated using the fibre-glass and resin (epoxy) with a two different geometries (circular and corrugated) each one will be filled with five types of filler (Rice Husk, Wood Chips, Aluminium Chips, Coconut Fibre, Palm Oil Fibre) all these type will be compared with empty Tubes for circular and corrugated in order to comprehend the crashworthiness parameters (initial failure load, average load, maximum crushing load, load ratio, energy absorption, specific energy absorption, volumetric energy absorption,...

Description: One of the techniques to support embankments is to use a deep mixing method with the addition of structures in many countries. The design has some measurable criteria such as analyses of settlement and stability, even though deep mixed materials are changeable. The primary emphasis of this research is on stability of embankments supported on columns installed by the deep mixing method. Several numerical analyses about the wet method and the dry method have been done in this paper; the dry method includes lower water content of improved soil, lower binder quantity and ordinarily much more strength, while in the wet method it is easier to produce homogeneous columns. Column supported embankments are constructed over soft ground to speed up construction, enhance stability of the embankment, minimize total and differential settlements, and protect adjacent resources. The columns should be durable and stronger than the existing site soil, and if correctly designed, they can impede im...

Description: Bat management is uncommon among the Malaysian even though the said wildlife pest possesses a quite alarming threat to human especially in the suburban. The bats have losses their natural habitat to development, consequently, it adapts to co-exist among the human by residing in man-made structures. Many studies have been done on bat control measures especially for residential building and plenty of methods have been developed and executed in controlling bat from entering building either destructive or non-destructive method. In most countries, non-destructive is preferable such as bat proofing structures, bat proofing materials, artificial roost, and temporary outside roost but how far the method successfully and efficiently containing the problem remains questionable. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of bat control measures available in the market nowadays. Applying Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as the underlying theory to determine the...

Description: Stochastic behavior of pitting corrosion poses a unique challenge in its computational analysis. However, it also stems from electrochemical activity causing general corrosion. In this paper, a framework for corrosion pit growth simulation based on the coupling of the Cellular Automaton (CA) and Boundary Element Methods (BEM) is presented. The framework assumes that pitting corrosion is controlled by electrochemical activity inside the pit cavity. The BEM provides the prediction of electrochemical activity given the geometrical data and polarization curves, while the CA is used to simulate the evolution of pit shapes based on electrochemical activity provided by BEM. To demonstrate the methodology, a sample case of local corrosion cells formed in pitting corrosion with varied dimensions and polarization functions is considered. Results show certain shapes tend to grow in certain types of environments. Some pit shapes appear to pose a higher risk by being potentially significant ...

Description: Generation of biofuels from renewable resources such as lignocellulosic biomass is a promising approach to reduce the sole reliability on the depleting fossil fuel. The aim of this work is to assess the potential environmental impact of bioethanol production from oil palm frond in a conceptual oil palm based biorefinery model, utilizing wet disc milling as a pretreatment method. A cradle-to-gate approach was selected, beginning with the harvesting and transportation of the frond petiole from the plantation, followed by production of oil palm frond petiole sugars via pretreatment and saccharification prior to bioethanol fermentation, and finally purification of the fermentation products to obtain anhydrous bioethanol. A life cycle assessment was performed using CML 2 baseline 2000 method (SimaPro v8.0), where ten impact categories were evaluated. It was found that the most significant environmental impact was from sugar recovery process with contribution of more than 90 %. This i...

Description: This paper demonstrates iron nanoparticles (FeNP) was synthesized from natural sources of Averrhoa bilimbi Linn. The plant extracts act as natural reducing agent in producing FeNP. There is no addition of any surfactants during the nanoparticles formation. Gravimetric analysis is used to calculate the percentage yield of plant extracts. TPC and DPPH assay method were used to evaluate antioxidant activity in different A. bilimbi extracts and synthesized FeNP. Based on the analyses, it showed that fruit has the highest percentage yield and antioxidant activity followed by leaf, twig and bark. Analysis from TPC, fruit contains 27.26 mg GAE/g and 39.46 mg GAE/g for FeNP. DPPH assay showed fruit extract has the highest free radical antioxidant activity with 61.93% in A. bilimbi and 80.00% in FeNP. Phytosynthesis of FeNP were examine by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Based on the spectra, it showed that FeNP recorded peak absorbance at 465 nm, 450 nm, 460 nm and 440 nm for UAE-F, UAE-...

Description: Microbial fuel cell (MFC) has been discovered and utilized in laboratory scale for electricity production based on microbial degradation of organic compound. However, various source of fuel has been tested and recently complex biomass such as lignocellulose biomass has been focused on. In the present research, oil palm tree empty fruit bunch (EFB) has been tested for power production using dual chamber MFC and power generation analysis has been conducted to address the performance of MFC. In addition, two microorganisms (electric harvesting microbe and cellulose degrading microbe) were used in the MFC operation. The analysis include voltage produced, calculated current and power.
