Description: Infrared spectroscopy permits a determination of the concentration of CHCl 2 COCl, CH 2 ClCOCl and CCl 3 COCl as the organic impurities in TiCl 4 . In this study, an infrared spectrometer with ZnSe window and the cell of PTFE was assembled, and used to determine the concentration of three organic impurities. The detection limits of CCl 3 COCl, CHCl 2 COCl, CH 2 ClCOCl were determined as 3.16×10 -3 μg/g 1.92×10 -3 μg/g and 1.55×10 -2 μg/g respectively. The new method is applied to quality control of refined TiCl 4 from titanium sponge.

Description: Cu-Ag alloys in three different compositions (Cu – 25/50/75wt% Ag) were produced by powder consolidation followed by high-pressure torsion. Deformation was performed till a saturation regime was reached. The generated microstructures were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and vary from ultra-fine grained to nanocrystalline to even partially amorphous structures. Vickers hardness measurements show a strong increase in hardness compared with the pure metals, annealing at 130°C leads to an additional increase in hardness.

Description: The development of hydropower in China has entered the gold period nowadays. Numerous challenging hydropower projects have been presented to researchers and scholars. In order to adapt to this trend and the need of the nation, TOPsys, an one dimensional simulation software based on the method of characteristics (MOC) for hydraulic transients, has been developed in State Key Laboratory of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Science, Wuhan University recently. This software has been employed for transient flow simulations of more than thirty hydropower stations in China and overseas. The whole paper is organized as follows: first, basic mathematical theory of the software was introduced. Subsequently, several typical engineering applications, including conventional power stations and pumped storage power stations, were given for validation. Finally, the versatility as well as the expandability of this software was shown with several special engineering examples.

Description: The tundish with channel type inducting heating is usually used to stabilize the superheat of molten steel, and remove the non-metallic inclusions. In order to research the transfer characteristics comprehensively, A mathematical model including electromagnetic field, flow and heat transfer is established to investigate the distribution of magnetic flux density, electromagnetic force (EMF), joule heat, flow and temperature field. The results indicate that the effective area of electromagnetic field mainly contains the channels, moreover, the region near the side walls contacting with channels also belongs to it. Therefore, the EMF generated in this area affects the flow pattern in pouring chamber and distribution chamber, and the pinch force produced in the channels also makes the molten steel rotate strongly. A comparison of flow field between the tundishs with and without induction heating implies that compared with the EMF, the thermal buoyancy has little influence on the flo...

Description: The monitored soil samples were collected from farmland in the area with mining activity in Karst area in Liupanshui. In this article, moss bag technology and TSP were used simultaneously for Cd transportation and deposition in the study area. Geostatistics and GIS were then used for the spatial distribution of Cd in the soil. Afterwards, Cd pollution to the soil environment and human health was studied by using the geo-accumulation index and potential ecological risk index methods. The results indicated that atmospheric deposition is the major route of Cd pollution. A moderate to strong pollution of Cd in the area and the degree of potential ecological risk was in a high level in the study area. Furthermore, Cd pollution in Liupanshui may originate from mining activity and atmospheric deposition.

Description: A comprehensive simulation model is presented to predict the performance of a hermetic reciprocating compressor and to reveal the underlying mechanisms when the compressor is running. The presented model is composed of sub-models simulating the in-cylinder compression process, piston ring/journal bearing frictional power loss, single phase induction motor and the overall compressor energy balance among different compressor components. The valve model, leakage through piston ring model and in-cylinder heat transfer model are also incorporated into the in-cylinder compression process model. A numerical algorithm solving the model is introduced. The predicted results of the compressor mass flow rate and input power consumption are compared to the published compressor map values. Future work will focus on detailed experimental validation of the model and parametric studies investigating the effects of structural parameters, including the stroke-to-bore ratio, on the compressor perfo...

Description: The mechanical properties of oxide films on copper based grinding wheel were studied by nanoindentation technique. The analysis of load displacement shows that the creep phenomenon occurs during the loading stage. Results show that the oxide film and the matrix have different characteristics, and the rigidity of the copper based grinding wheel is 0.6-1.3mN/nm, which is weaker than that of the matrix; the hardness of the oxide film is 2000-2300MPa, which is higher than the matrix; and the elastic modulus of the oxide film is 100-120GPa, also higher than the matrix.

Description: Through the comparative analysis of the results of the triaxial compression experiments of sandstone and the numerical simulation results of particle flow code PFC 2D under the same conditions, the typical simulation curve and the corresponding simulation process were selected to analyze the evolution characteristics of the surface deformation field, the evolution characteristics of the velocity field and displacement field of the deformation localization bands of sandstone under triaxial compression. Research results show that the changes of the velocities and displacements of deformation localization bands corresponds to the change of stress during compression; In the same deformation localization band, the dislocation velocities are always in the same direction, but in the direction vertical to the localization band, the localization band sometimes squeezes and sometimes stretches; At different positions of the same deformation localization band, the dislocation vel...

Description: There are lots of challenges for deriving urban land cover types for high resolution optical imagery because of spectral similarity of different objects, mixed pixels, shadows of buildings and large tree crowns. In order to reduce these uncertainties, recently, it’s a trend of the classification of urban land cover from multi-source sensors in the field of urban remote sensing. In this study, a hierarchical support vector machine (SVM) classification method was applied to the urban land cover mapping, using the WorldView-2 imagery and airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. The results showed that: (1) The overall accuracy (OA) and overall kappa (OK) were 72.92% and 0.66 for WorldView-2 imagery alone; while the OA and OK were improved up to 89.44% and 0.87 for the synergistic use of the two types of data source. (2) Buildings and road/parking lots extracted from fused data were more precision and well-shaped. The two classes from fused data were optimally classified w...

Description: Stock pumps cost 25 percent of total power consumption in a modern paper mill. Owing to the severe erosion of pump casing and impeller during operation, stock pump often results in efficiency drop and rising power consumption. A favourable prediction of the impeller wearing character can effective guide optimization design of stock pump impeller. Thereby it can reduce impeller wear and extend stock pump performance life. We simulated the three-dimensional unsteady solid-liquid two-phase flow characteristic in the hydraulic channel of a low specific speed stock pump with open and three blades impeller. The standard k - ε turbulent model and the pseudo-fluid model were adopted in simulation. Clearance between covers and impeller is taken into consideration in modelling, and pulp is simplified into mixtures of solid particles and water. The Finnie prediction model is applied to predict impeller erosion character. The simulation results of different solid particle size ...
