Description: The recently proposed global monsoon hypothesis interprets monsoon systems as part of one global-scale atmospheric overturning circulation, implying a connection between the regional monsoon systems and an in-phase behaviour of all northern hemispheric monsoons on annual timescales (Trenberth et al., 2000). Whether this concept can be applied to past climates and variability on longer timescales is still under debate, because the monsoon systems exhibit different regional characteristics such as different seasonality (i.e. onset, peak and withdrawal). To investigate the interconnection of different monsoon systems during the pre-industrial Holocene, five transient global climate model simulations have been analysed with respect to the rainfall trend and variability in different sub-domains of the Afro-Asian monsoon region. Our analysis suggests that on millennial timescales with varying orbital forcing, the monsoons do not behave as a tightly connected global system. According to the models, the Indian and North African monsoons are coupled, showing similar rainfall trend and moderate correlation in centennial rainfall variability in all models. The East Asian monsoon changes independently during the Holocene. The dissimilarities in the seasonality of the monsoon sub-systems lead to a stronger response of the North African and Indian monsoon systems to the Holocene insolation forcing than of the East Asian monsoon and affect the seasonal distribution of Holocene rainfall variations. Within the Indian and North African monsoon domain, precipitation solely changes during the summer months, showing a decreasing Holocene precipitation trend. In the East Asian monsoon region, the precipitation signal is determined by an increasing precipitation trend during spring and a decreasing precipitation change during summer, partly balancing each other. A synthesis of reconstructions and the model results do not reveal an impact of the different seasonality on the timing of the Holocene rainfall optimum in the different sub-monsoon systems. Rather they indicate locally inhomogeneous rainfall changes and show that single palaeo-records should not be used to characterise the rainfall change and monsoon evolution for entire monsoon sub-systems.

Description: An account is given of the current situation regarding the lake fisheries and fish culture practices in China. The modern lake fisheries take advantage of the 3-D spaces of lakes to fully develop the resources. Currently, the fisheries concentrate on the following 3 aspects: bringing the water body into full play; various types of aquaculture enclosures; and selective measures in resources protection, stocking and aquaculture.

Notes: An apparatus, based on sputter-initiated resonant ionization spectroscopy and combined with time-of-flight mass spectroscopy, has been recently developed for microanalysis of mineral samples and other solid materials. This equipment has two kinds of ion gun, which make it possible to do more convenient and accurate microanalysis of complicated mineral samples. With this apparatus, detection and size measurement of fine gold grains trapped in pyrite at low concentrations have been carried out. The detection limit of this apparatus for gold is 73 ppb. The apparatus also has the function of secondary electron imaging. This gives very helpful information for geologists to evaluate the inborn state of gold in mineral samples and to improve the extraction rate of gold from minerals. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report a method to fabricate polymer-based composites with aligned carbon nanotubes, and a procedure to determine the nanotube orientation and the degree of alignment. The composites were fabricated by casting a suspension of carbon nanotubes in a solution of a thermoplastic polymer and chloroform. They were uniaxially stretched at 100 °C and were found to remain elongated after removal of the load at room temperature. The orientation and the degree of alignment were determined by x-ray diffraction. The dispersion and the alignment of the nanotubes were also studied by transmission electron microscopy. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Composites of uniaxially oriented multiwalled carbon nanotubes embedded in polymer matrices were fabricated and investigated by transmission electron microscopy. In strained composite films, buckling was ubiquitously observed in bent nanotubes with large curvatures. By analyses of a large number of bent nanotubes, the onset buckling strain and fracture strain were estimated to be (approximate)5% and ≥18%, respectively. The buckling wavelengths are proportional to the dimensions of the nanotubes. Examination of the fracture surface showed adherence of the polymer to the nanotubes. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetic susceptibility of partially aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes has been studied using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. Partial alignment of multiwalled nanotubes was produced by uniaxially straining composites of carbon nanotubes embedded in polymer matrices. The degree of alignment was determined by x-ray diffraction. The observed magnetic response is diamagnetic and anisotropic with the component along the nanotubes less diamagnetic than that of the perpendicular. The observed anisotropy is consistent with theoretical predictions, but it contradicts earlier experimental findings. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The temperature factor of silicon has been determined by the powder neutron diffraction technique employing a double-axis neutron diffractometer. A neutron wavelength of 1.184 Å was used in the experiment. The sample used was a fine powder of silicon of purity 99.999%. The correction to the observed intensities due to thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) was not applied as the neutron velocity of 3.34 km s-1 (corresponding to neutron wavelength of 1.184 Å) is less than the minimum velocity of sound in this crystal. The B value obtained from these experiments was found to be 0.45 (2) Å〈sup/〉, corresponding to a mean-square vibrational amplitude of 0.017 (2) Å2 and to a Debye temperature of 531 (11) K at the sample temperature of 284 K at which the experiment was performed.
