Description: Aloevera is one of the oldest medicinal plants and it possesses different types of pharmacological properties including anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and antioxidant activity. More over Aloevera contains 75 bioactive compounds such as polyphenol, flavonoids, alkaloids, anthraquinone etc. Such bioactive compounds can be used to reduce silver ions to produce silver nanoparticles. In this study, we are trying to formulate bio-synthesised silver nanoparticle ( b-AgNps ) by green chemistry approach. It is a very simple, efficient and eco-friendly approach for silver nanoparticle synthesis that is formed by reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) solution using Aloe vera leaf extract as a reducing agent. Hydrothermal method was used to prepare b-AgNps using aloe vera leaf extract as both reducing and stabilizing agent. Then b-AgNps were characterized by FESEM, XRD, DLS and UV-VIS spectroscopy. Biological activity of b-AgNps were evaluated by perform...

Description: This study aims to understand the biomechanical effect of pedicle-screw fixation with different implant materials on lumbar spine. FE method is used to develop three-dimensional model of lumbar spine (L1-S). Three level pedicle-screw-rod is attached to the model with two different rods: Stainless Steel (SS) and poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK). The implanted models along with intact models are simulated for different physiological conditions such as axial rotation, lateral bending and flexion-extension under ± 6, 8 and 10 Nm moment with 500 N compressive loads. The spinal biomechanics found sensitive to the elastic modulus of the rod material. In case of pedicle screw fixation with SS, the ROM is very less (1.3° for extension and 2.88° for flexion) as compared to natural model. For PEEK rod, ROM is increased 3 to 4 times for axial rotation, 4 to 7 times for lateral bending and 1.8 to 2 times for flexion-extension. SS rods share more load and generate less stress on vertebrae compa...

Description: In the modern engineering world, extensive research has led to the development of some special grades of steel, often suited for enhanced functions. EN 9 steel is one such grade, having major applications in power plants, automobile and aerospace industry. Different heat treatment processes are employed to achieve high hardness and high wear resistance, but machinability subsequently decreases. Existing literature is not sufficient to achieve a balance between hardness and machinability. The aim of this experimental work is to determine the hardness values and observe microstructural changes in EN9 steel, when it is subjected to annealing, normalizing and quenching. Finally, the effects of tempering after each of these heat treatments on hardness and microstructure have also been shown. It is seen that the tempering after normalizing the specimen achieved satisfactory results. The microstructure was also observed to be consisting of fine grains.

Description: The present work emphasizes on the mechanical properties such as micro-hardness, flexural and impact strength of jute fiber and Al 2 O 3 filler based polymer composites at dry and wet conditions. Composite samples reinforced with different wt.% of fibers and filler were prepared by hand lay-up technique. To improve the mechanical properties, jute fiber was hybridized with Al 2 O 3 filler. The maximum flexural strength of 72.94 MPa and impact strength of 1.902 J is obtained for composites with 30 wt.% fiber content and 10 wt.% of filler content. The hardness of composite increases with increase in fiber and filler loading i.e 40 wt.% fiber content and 10 wt.% of filler content. The maximum hardness value is obtained 29.9 Hv. The effect of water absorption on mechanical properties of jute reinforced hybrid polymer composites is also investigated. To determine the influence of water absorption on the mechanical properties, specimens were immers...

Description: Materials, Vol. 10, Pages 857: Biosorbents for Removing Hazardous Metals and Metalloids Materials doi: 10.3390/ma10080857 Authors: Katsutoshi Inoue Durga Parajuli Kedar Ghimire Biplob Biswas Hidetaka Kawakita Tatsuya Oshima Keisuke Ohto Biosorbents for remediating aquatic environmental media polluted with hazardous heavy metals and metalloids such as Pb(II), Cr(VI), Sb(III and V), and As(III and V) were prepared from lignin waste, orange and apple juice residues, seaweed and persimmon and grape wastes using simple and cheap methods. A lignophenol gel such as lignocatechol gel was prepared by immobilizing the catechol functional groups onto lignin from sawdust, while lignosulfonate gel was prepared directly from waste liquor generated during pulp production. These gels effectively removed Pb(II). Orange and apple juice residues, which are rich in pectic acid, were easily converted using alkali (e.g., calcium hydroxide) into biosorbents that effectively removed Pb(II). These materials also effectively removed Sb(III and V) and As(III and V) when these were preloaded with multi-valent metal ions such as Zr(IV) and Fe(III). Similar biosorbents were prepared from seaweed waste, which is rich in alginic acid. Other biosorbents, which effectively removed Cr(VI), were prepared by simply treating persimmon and grape wastes with concentrated sulfuric acid.

Description: In this work, eutectic Al-12.6Si alloy with and without manganese (Mn) have been developed through gravity casting route. The effect of Mn concentration (0.0 wt.%, 1 wt%, 2 wt% and 3 wt%) on microstructural morphology and hardness property of the alloy has been investigated. The eutectic Al-12.6 Si alloy exhibits the presence of combine plate, needle and rod-like eutectic silicon phase with very sharp corners and coarser primary silicon particles within the α-Al phase. In addition of 1wt.% of Mn in the eutectic Al-12.6Si alloy, sharp corners of the primary Si and needle-like eutectic Si are became blunt and particles size is reduced. Further, increase in Mn concentration (2.0 wt.%) in the Al-12.6Si alloy, irregular plate shape Al 6 (Mn,Fe) intermetallics are formed inside the α-Al phase, but the primary and eutectic phase morphology is similar to the eutectic Al-12.6Si alloy. The volume fraction of Al 6 (Mn,Fe) increases and Al 6 (Mn,Fe) particles appe...

Description: The multiple Traveling Salesman Problem (mTSP) is the general type of TSP, in which at least one than one sales representatives can be utilized as a part of the arrangement set. The Constraint in the improvement undertaking is that every sales representative comes back to beginning stage at end of outing, heading out to a particular arrangement of urban areas in the middle of and with the exception of the first, every last city is gone to by precisely one sales representative. The thought is to scan for the briefest course that is the slightest separation required for every salesperson to go from the beginning area to individual urban areas and back to the area from where he has begun. It is an intricate NP-Hard issue and has different applications for the most part in the field of planning and steering. The measure of algorithm time to take care of this issue develops exponentially as number of urban areas builds thus, the meta-heuristic streamlining algorithms, for example, Ge...

Description: EN 8 steel is an important grade of steel, used for manufacture of axles and shafts, bolts, gears, studs etc. Heat treatment is an important step in achieving desired mechanical properties and microstructure, for different applications. However, with the increase in hardness and wear resistance, machinability decreases consequently. Literature review of past works failed to achieve a good balance between hardness and machinability. In this experimental work, heat treatment methods, namely, annealing, normalizing and quenching is done on EN 8 steel, a grade of medium carbon steel. Hardness and microstructure is studied and compared. Furthermore, tempering is also conducted after each heat treatment to study its effects on hardness and microstructure. Results show that tempering after normalizing of EN 8 steel gives satisfactory hardness values. The microstructure is also found to consist of fine grains of pearlite.
