    Description: Current environmental impact analyses are mainly focused on land, soil, energy, and material consumption, while studies regarding blue water consumption are scarce. Based on the water footprint concept, this study evaluates the impacts of blue water consumption on human health, ecosystem quality, and water resources in China from the production and consumption perspective, respectively. The results indicate that environmental impacts due to blue water consumption in China were 15.82 × 106 DALY (disability-adjusted life years), 96.54 × 109 m2∙year, and 175.20 × 109 MJ, and provinces such as Xinjiang, Shandong, and Hebei could be targets for achieving smaller environmental impacts in the future. More than 80% of environmental impacts were related to the agricultural sector. In terms of agricultural production, about 70% of the environmental impacts were related to product export. Measures such as the shift of the agricultural production pattern from water-intensive crops and animal products toward less water-intensive ones, the increase of agricultural water use efficiency, and the adoption of water-saving technologies could contribute to smaller environmental impacts. In terms of agricultural consumption, more than 95% of the environmental impacts were related to agricultural products produced locally. The focus was on increasing awareness of the importance of saving water and whether products were imported from regions with relatively small environmental impacts.

    Description: Paying taxes is a form of corporate social responsibility. Corporate tax avoidance effectively reduces operating costs, thereby increasing shareholder returns, but the pros and cons are different for executives. This paper takes data from companies listed in China from 2000 to 2016 to explore the causal relationship between managerial power and corporate tax avoidance, using principal component analysis and entropy weight methodology to construct managerial power. First, we conduct an ordinary least square regression, and then we employ alternative measures to avoid taxation, and use managerial power as a robustness check. Next, we rerun the model by using quantile regression and propensity score matching. Finally, in order to tackle problems with endogeneity, we carry out regressions utilizing instrumental variables and simultaneous regression equations. We conclude that managerial power reduces corporate tax avoidance, and firms with more managerial power have fewer incentives to avoid taxes. The results of this paper can guide the taxation of companies listed on the Chinese market to achieve the full payment of tax obligations by reinforcing managerial power in companies, which improves national taxation and leads to sustained economic growth.

    Description: Background Very little research has been done to simultaneously investigate the effects of Tai Chi (TC) on depression and heart rate variability (HRV). This study, therefore, attempted to explore the effects of TC on depression and on HRV parameters. Methods Sixty older individuals with depression score of 10 or above (the Geriatric Depression Scale, GDS) were randomly assigned into two groups: TC (n = 30) and control group (n = 30). Participants in the experimental group participated in a 24-week TC training program (three 60-min sessions per week), whereas individuals in the control group maintained their unaltered lifestyle. Depression and HRV were measured using the GDS and digital electrocardiogram at baseline and after the 24-week intervention. Results The TC had produced significant positive chances in depression and some HRV parameters (mean heart rate, RMSSD, HF, LFnorm, and HFnorm) (p 〈 0.05), whereas these positive results were not observed in the control group. Conclusions The results of this study indicated that TC may alleviate depression of the elderly through modulating autonomous nervous system or HRV parameters. This study adds to a growing body of research showing that TC may be effective in treating depression of the elderly. Tai Chi as a mild to moderate mind-body exercise is suitable for older individuals who suffer from depression.

    Description: Objective: This study is the first meta-analysis investigating the rehabilitative effects of Wuqinxi for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: Five electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, CNKI, and Wanfang) from inception until early November 2018 were searched. All randomized controlled trials (RCT) using Wuqinxi as the main intervention component were included for meta-analysis. The pooled effect sizes (Standardized mean difference, SMD) were calculated to determine the magnitude of the Wuqinxi intervention effect. Moderator analysis was only conducted for total training time. Results: Overall results of the meta-analysis indicated that Wuqinxi exercise significantly improved exercise capability (SMD = 1.18, 95% CI 0.53 to 1.84, e 〈 0.001, I2 = 84.97%), FEV1 (SMD = 0.44, 95% CI 0.12 to 0.77, e 〈 0.001, I2 = 33.77%), FEV1% (SMD = 0.59, 95% CI 0.24 to 0.93, e 〈 0.001, I2 = 63.79%), FEV1/FVC (SMD = 0.65, 95% CI 0.37 to 0.93, e = 0.006, I2 = 44.32%) and CCQ (SMD = 1.23, 95% CI 0.31 to 2.14, e = 0.01, I2 = 93.32%). Conclusions: With no occurrence of adverse event, clinicians could try to incorporate Wuqinxi exercise into their first-line rehabilitation regime for COPD patients.

    Description: In this study, the corrosion behavior of rare earth (RE) microalloyed steels was first evaluated through potentiodynamic polarization tests and corrosion weight loss experiments, and then the corrosion morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). After immersion in a NaCl solution, the sulfides (or oxygen sulfides) dissolved preferentially, followed by corrosion at the boundary between the Fe matrix and oxides. Afterwards, the inclusions fell off as a whole, which promoted pitting nucleation. The first principle modeling demonstrated that the work functions of various kinds of inclusions descended in the following order: La2Zr2O7 〉 LaAlO3 〉 (La2O3 ≈ Fe ≈ La2O2S) 〉 La2S3, which provided a theoretical explanation to the dissolution behaviors of inclusions. That is, inclusions containing sulfur tend to dissolve preferentially, whereas the oxides do not dissolve easily. Subsequently, the surface current distributions were detected by the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET), which provided more microscopic insight into the role of inclusions in the corrosion propagation. Results showed that the active sites of pitting nucleation accelerated the transverse propagation of corrosion. Finally, local corrosion spread to the whole surface as uniform corrosion.

    Description: Conducting water resource assessment and forecasting at a basin scale requires effective and accurate simulation of the hydrological process. However, intensive, complex human activities and environmental changes are constraining and challenging the hydrological modeling development and application by complicating the hydrological cycle within its local contexts. Six sub-catchments of the Yellow River basin, the second-largest river in China, situated in a semi-arid climate zone, have been selected for this study, considering hydrological processes under a natural period (before 1970) and under intensive human disturbance (2000–2013). The study aims to assess the capacity and performance of the hydrological models in simulating the discharge under a changing environment. Four well-documented and applied hydrological models, i.e., the Xin’anjiang (XAJ) model, GR4J model, SIMHYD model, and RCCC-WBM (Water Balance Model developed by Research Center for Climate Change) model, were selected for this assessment. The results show that (1) the annual areal temperature of all sub-catchments presented a significant rising trend, and annual precipitation exhibited insignificant decline trend; (2) as a result of climate change and intensive human activities, the annual runoff series showed a declining trend with abrupt changes mostly occurring in the 1980s with the exception of the Tangnaihai station; (3) the four hydrological models generally performed well for runoff simulation for all sub-catchments under the natural period. In terms of Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient, the XAJ model worked better in comparison to other hydrological models due to its detailed representations and complicated mechanism in runoff generation and flow-routing scheme; (4) environmental changes have impacted the performance of the four hydrological models under all sub-catchments, in particularly the Pianguan River catchment, which is could be attributed to the various human activities that in turn represent more complexity for the regional hydrological cycle to some extent, and reduce the ability to predict the runoff series; (5) the RCCC-WBM model, well known for its simple structure and principles, is considered to be acceptable for runoff simulation for both natural and human disturbance periods, and is recommended for water resource assessment under changing environments for semi-arid regions.

    Description: This paper deals with the problem of high cross-range resolution Doppler beam sharpening (DBS) imaging for airborne wide-area surveillance (WAS) radar under short dwell time situations. A knowledge-aided DBS (KA-DBS) imaging algorithm is proposed. In the proposed KA-DBS framework, the DBS imaging model for WAS radar is constructed and the cross-range resolution is analyzed. Since the radar illuminates the imaging scene continuously through the scanning movement of the antenna, there is strong spatial coherence between adjacent pulses. Based on this fact, forward and backward pulse information can be predicted, and the equivalent number of pulses in each coherent processing interval (CPI) will be doubled based on the autoregressive (AR) technique by taking advantage of the spatial continuity property of echoes. Finally, the predicted forward and backward pulses are utilized to merge with the initial pulses, then the newly merged pulses in each CPI are utilized to perform the DBS imaging. Since the number of newly merged pulses in KA-DBS is twice larger than that in the conventional DBS algorithm with the same dwell time, the cross-range resolution in the proposed KA-DBS algorithm can be improved by a factor of two. The imaging performance assessment conducted by resorting to real airborne data set, has verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

    Description: Understanding the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of austenitic steels and developing an effective strategy to improve resistance to HE are of great concern but challenging. In this work, first-principles studies were performed to investigate the HE mechanism and the improved resistance of Al-containing austenite to HE. Our results demonstrate that interstitial hydrogen atoms have different site preferences in Al-free and Al-containing austenites. The calculated binding energies and diffusion barriers of interstitial hydrogen atoms in Al-containing austenite are remarkably higher than those in Al-free austenite, indicating that the presence of Al is more favorable for reducing hydrogen mobility. In Al-free austenite, interstitial hydrogen atoms caused a remarkable increase in lattice compressive stress and a distinct decrease in bulk, shear, and Young’s moduli. Whereas in Al-containing austenite, the lattice compressive stress and the mechanical deterioration induced by interstitial hydrogen atoms were effectively suppressed.

    Description: A simple, rapid, and sensitive visual detection method for observing cucumber green mottle mosaic virus was reported based on the template-independent polymerization activity of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT), coupled with the cascade amplification of Mg2+-dependent DNAzyme and hemin/G-quadruplex DNAzyme. Briefly, the hybridized dsDNA of T1/P1 was cut into two parts at its position of 5′-AA↓CG↑TT-3′ by the restricted enzyme AcII. The longer, newborn fragment originating from P1 was tailed at its 3’-end by oligo dG, and an intact enzymatic sequence of Mg2+-dependent DNAzyme was generated. The substrate sequence in the loop segment of the hairpin probe (HP) hybridized with the newborn enzymatic sequence and was cleaved into two parts in the presence of Mg2+. The locked G-quadruplex sequence in the stem segment of the HP was released, which catalyzed the oxidation of ABTS2- in the presence of H2O2, and the resulting solution turned green. A correlation between the absorbance and concentration of T1 was obtained in a range from 0.1 pM to 2 nM, with a detection limit of 0.1 pM. In addition to promoting a lower detection limit and shorter monitoring time, this method also demonstrated an excellent selectivity to single or double nucleotide changes. Therefore, the designed strategy provided a rapid and efficient platform for viral inspection and plant protection.

    Description: There has been little research on how destination social responsibility impacts the pro-tourism behaviors of residents. Drawing from place attachment theory and sustainable tourism literature, this study proposes that place attachment mediates the link between destination social responsibility and pro-tourism behaviors. The results from a field survey of local residents around three scenic spots in the Xuefeng mountain area in China reveal that destination social responsibility exerts a significantly positive impact on pro-tourism behaviors of residents, and confirm a mediating effect of place attachment (i.e., place identity and place dependence) in the linkage of destination social responsibility and pro-tourism behaviors. This research provides theoretical and managerial contributions to sustainable tourism literature and advances the understanding of the antecedents of residents’ pro-tourism behaviors.
