Notes: A mixed variational formulation is used as basis for developing a mixed finite element method for axisymmetric shell. The independent unknowns of the method are the axial and radial displacement components, the rotation of the normal to the middle surface and the meridional bending stress couple. The basic element is a frustrum of curved meridian. General advantages of the mixed method are presented, one of which is the possibility of using piece-wise linear functions of the meridional arclength to represent the basic unknowns. Test results are presented for plate bending, transverse shear deformation, membrane behaviour, edge-zone bending, bending near the junction of two shells, convergence of the method and accuracy of middle surface curvature interpolation. Shell geometries considered are cylindrical, conical, spherical and ellipsoidal. Good results are obtained which should increase interest in the relatively less known and less tested mixed method as compared to the stiffness method.

Notes: The objective of the paper is a survey and classification of available numerical methods for boundary value problems with an emphasis on two point boundary value problems. In the paper a general two point boundary value problem is stated first and later available numerical methods are classified into five main groups according to their approach in numerical solution. In the next sections of the paper, each of these main groups are described and appropriate subgroups are defined and discussed.

Notes: Two-dimensional distributions and three-dimensional element meshes are usually plotted in axonometric projection. Stereo decomposition can make the plots of complicated functions and structures more synoptical; the object appears in three dimensions. The method can be useful for the display of displacements and model shapes of three-dimensional structures as well.

Notes: In this work the problem of indentation of a half-space by a spherical rigid indentor is investigated using the finite element method.A system of constitutive equations applicable to elasto-plastic materials subjected to large deformations is used to determine the deformations and stresses for the contact problems. These equations represent the simplest generalization for the large-deformation conditions of the classical theory of plasticity of metals based on the von Mises yield condition and the associated flow rule. The material formulation of the kinematical and dynamical relations will be used. These equations combine the kinematic and the isotropic strain-hardening models. The results obtained from this work are compared with existing solutions for this problem that are confined to small strains and elastic, ideal-plastic materials.

Notes: Plate-bending finite elements are developed for thin and moderately thick plates. The element takes into account the influence of the transverse normal strain and the transverse shear effects. For the computation of the stresses, an additional plate element is developed to determine the inplane displacements and forces. The combined effects of the plate-bending and inplane elements are used for the complete solution of the problem. Several examples are solved and compared with their corresponding exact solutions.

Notes: For the solution of thermal comfort problems a coupled model is presented consisting of the thermal model of the human body and of the clothing, with boundary conditions of the third kind. For thermal modelling the human body is divided into 16 parts according to the special character of the internal heat generation, of the blood vessel system and of the sweat secretion mechanism. Part models are connected by the flow paths of arteries and veins.Transport phenomena in the clothing are treated by a coupled heat and mass transfer model which permits various kinds of clothing for the different parts of the body. The equation system of the full model has been solved numerically by using time stepping schemes. As the results of the computations an approximative temperature field of the human body is produced.Calculated results have been compared with Experimental data.

Notes: The constitutive equation is assumed in a very general form which includes as special cases non-linear creep, incremental elasto-plasticity as well as viscoelasticity represented by a chain of n standard solid models. Subdividing the structure into N finite elements, the problem of structural analysis is formulated with a system of 6N(n + 1) ordinary non-linear first-order differential equations in terms of the components of stresses and strains in the elements. This formulation enables one to apply Runge-Kutta methods or the predictor-corrector methods.

Notes: Part 1 of this paper reports on the formulation of an advanced boundary - integral equation model for fracture mechanics analysis of cracked plates, subject to elastoplastic behaviour or other, related body force problems. The basis of this formulation contrasts with other BIE elastoplastic formulations in the use of the Green's function for an infinite plane containing a stress free crack. This Green's function formulation assures that the total elastic strain field for the crack problem is accurately imbedded in the numerical model. The second part of this paper reports on the numerical implementation of this algorithm, as currently developed. The anelastic strain field (residual strains, thermal strains, plastic strains, etc.) is approximated as piecewise constant, while the boundary data is modelled with linear interpolations. An iteration solution scheme is adopted which eliminates the need for recalculation of the BIE matrices. The stability and accuracy of the algorithm are demonstrated for an uncracked, notch geometry, and comparison to finite element results is made for the centre-cracked panel. The data shows that even the crude plastic strain model applied is capable of excellent resolution of crack tip plastic behaviour.

Notes: A new error estimator is presented which is not only reasonably accurate but whose evaluation is computationally so simple that it can be readily implemented in existing finite element codes. The estimator allows the global energy norm error to be well estmated and alos gives a good evaluation of local errors. It can thus be combined with a full adaptive process of refinement or, more simply, provide guidance for mesh redesign which allows the user to obtain a desired accuracy with one or two trials. When combined with an automatic mesh generator a very efficient guidance process to analysis is avaiable.Estimates other than the energy norm have successfully been applied giving, for instance, a predetermined accuracy of stresses.
