Notes: The optical birefringence induced in DNA solutions by both oscillating hydrodynamic fields (flow birefringence) and oscillating electric fields (Kerr effect) is measured over a wide frequency range. The observed frequency response of the birefrigence is compared with theories for rigid ellipsoidal particles and for Gaussian chains. DNA at 6 × 105 molecular weight is found to exhibit rigid particle hydrodynamic behavior, while DNA at 5 × 106 molecular weight behaves like a flexible chain. Characterization of the hydrodynamic relaxation spectra for the DNA's by oscillatory flow birefringence allows precise comparison between theory and the experimental Kerr effect response. The dielectric model for DNA contains both permanent and dispersionless induced dipole moments. The dielectric behavior of DNA has the character of a permanent dipole but with anomalous low-frequency dispersion in the Kerr effect. The existing theories do not adequately describe this dispersion. A fluctuation dipole mechanism with relaxation times comparable to those associated with the hydrodynamic motion could possibly demonstrate the observed polar behavior.

Notes: The dissociation of beef liver and bacterial (Micrococcus lysodeikticus) catalases by the action of sodium n-dodecyl sulfate (SDS) has been investigated as a function of SDS concetration and time by ultracentrifugation. The rate of dissociation of beef liver catalase is found to be much faster than that for bacterial catalase in 25 mM SDS at pH 7.0. Beef liver catalase is dissociated into its four subunits after 24 h, whereas bacterial catalase is not completely dissociated after 36 days of incubation. The binding of SDS to beef liver catalase obeys a Hill equation with a cooperativity exponent of 2.0 and a binding constant of 440. The initial interaction of SDS with beef liver catalase can be detected by microcalorimetry, whereas the mixing of SDS with bacterial catalase is athermal. Bacterial catalase retains enzymic activity in the presence of SDS, whereas beef liver catalase is completely deactivated at SDS concentrations above 5 mM. Beef liver catalase is more sensitive to acid denaturation than bacterial catalase, and the rate of dissociation for both catalases is sixth-order in proton concentration. Comparison of the amino acid analysis of the two catalases shows that bacterial catalase has a smaller number of lysyl residues and a larger number of glutamyl residues than beef liver catalase. Taken together these structural differences could lead to a reduced affinity of bacterial catalase for the binding of SDS as observed.

Notes: Techniques have previously been developed for the preparation of thin (10-100 μm) polymer latex films, and the measurement of their gas permeabilities. These methods have been used to study heterogeneous polymer films cast from core-shell polymer latices. Such films comprise a regular dispersion of core particles in a continuum of coalesced shell polymer. The behaviour of these films is compared with heterogeneous films cast from mixtures of two homopolymer latices, and homogeneous films cast from homopolymer and copolymer latices and from polymer solutions.

Notes: The results of heat of fusion measurements on an ethylene/propylene copolymer (containing 27 mole-% propylene), which had been subjected to different doses of gamma radiation (0-620 Mrad) at 298°K are described. The dependence of both the enthalpy and entropy of fusion on radiation dose is similar to that observed previously with isotactic polypropylene.

Notes: A TLM nodal structure suitable for modelling the propagation of transient stresses is described. The nodal structure is analysed algebraically using the analogy between TLM and discrete state space control theory. A numerical implementation based on this nodal structure is validated by comparing results generated using the TLM model with those produced using the finite difference approach for the case of pressure applied to a semi-infinite plate.

Notes: An analogy is described between the TLM algorithm and discrete state-space control theory. The analogy is used to derive the characteristic equations corresponding to parametrized model structures. Characteristic equations corresponding to several widely used node structures are derived by this means and found to be consistent with the observed behaviour of corresponding TLM models. An example is given of the use of the analogy in teh predictive mode.

Notes: Redundancy in the simplest form of a two-dimensional TLM network is identified and a method of eliminating it is described. Results obtained using the non-redundant algorithm are compared with those derived from the standard, redundant algorithm. The non-redundant approach is extended to deal with non-uniform elemental capacitance; a cylindrical geometry is taken as an example of this. The scope for and benefits of rendering TLM diffusion models non-redundant are discussed.

Notes: A range of permeation techniques were employed to investigate the transport mechanisms across polymer films cast from lattices containing either no or only low levels of water soluble leachates such as residual surfactant from polymerisation or added plasticiser essential to film formation. Hydrophilic pathways can provide a mechanism of transport, in addition to partition into and solution-diffusion in the polymer phase. Loss of porosity by low Tg polymers on drying highlights the value of solute probes in studying film morphology.

Notes: The influence of two distinct types of water leachable polymeric additives upon the transport properties across polymer latex films is considered. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, added as an aqueous solution, and a methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer, added as latex particles, are both shown to be more effective than lower molecular weight rapidly water soluble additives, typified by sucrose, in enhancing solute transport and creating pathways for convective diffusion.
