    Notes: Abstract. The problem of navigation systems with uncertain noise is considered. A minimax robust filtering which can minimize the worst performance under noise uncertainties using the game theory is proposed. This new filter is applied to an integrated GPS/INS navigation system. A high dynamics aircraft trajectory is designed to test the new filter. The results show that minimax robust filtering performs better than standard Kalman filtering when noise parameters of an inertial measurement unit change their statistical properties.

    Notes: Abstract Ascidia ceratodes exposed to14C-phenylalanine in the surrounding seawater incorporates the radiolabel into newly biosynthesized tunichrome molecules. Radioactivity can be detected in tunichrome extracted from circulating blood cells within one day following initial exposure to the radiolabel; weak activity (≤4 μCi/mol tunichrome=22 nmol phenylalanine/mol tunichrome) is detected in 1 to 10 days; significantly higher amounts of radiolabel (57 μCi/mol tunichrome=318 nmol phenylalanine/mol tunichrome) appear 20 days after seawater exposure. Therefore, phenylalanine can function as a precursor in the biosynthesis of tunichrome.

Given a graph G=(V,E), the well-known spanning forest problem of G can be viewed as the problem of finding a maximal subset F of edges in G such that the subgraph induced by F is acyclic. Although this problem has well-known efficient NC algorithms, its vertex counterpart, the problem of finding a maximal subset U of vertices in G such that the subgraph induced by U is acyclic, has not been shown to be in NC (or even in RNC) and is not believed to be parallelizable in general. In this paper we present NC algorithms for solving the latter problem for two special cases. First, we show that, for a planar graph with n vertices, the problem can be solved in $O(\log^3 n)$ time with O(n) processors on an EREW PRAM. Second, we show that the problem is solvable in NC if the input graph G has only vertex-induced paths of length polylogarithmic in the number of vertices of G. As a consequence of this result, we show that certain natural extensions of the well-studied maximal independent set problem remain solvable in NC. Moreover, we show that, for a constant-degree graph with n vertices, the problem can be solved in $O(\sqrt{n}\log^3n)$ time with O(n 2 ) processors on an EREW PRAM.

Different phylogenetic trees for the same group of species are often produced either by procedures that use diverse optimality criteria [16] or from different genes [12] in the study of molecular evolution. Comparing these trees to find their similarities and dissimilarities (i.e., distance ) is thus an important issue in computational molecular biology. Several distance metrics including the nearest neighbor interchange (nni) distance and the subtree-transfer distance have been proposed and extensively studied in the literature. This article considers a natural extension of the subtree-transfer distance, called the linear-cost subtree-transfer distance, and studies the complexity and efficient approximation algorithms for this distance as well as its relationship to the nni distance. The linear-cost subtree-transfer model seems more suitable than the (unit-cost) subtree-transfer model in some applications. The following is a list of our results: 1. The linear-cost subtree-transfer distance is in fact identical to the nni distance on unweighted phylogenies. 2. There is an algorithm to compute an optimal linear-cost subtree-transfer sequence between unweighted phylogenies in O(n ⋅ 2 O(d) ) time, where d denotes the linear-cost subtree-transfer distance. Such an algorithm is useful when d is small. 3. Computing the linear-cost subtree-transfer distance between two weighted phylogenetic trees is NP-hard, provided we allow multiple leaves of a tree to share the same label (i.e., the trees are not necessarily uniquely labeled). 4. There is an efficient approximation algorithm for computing the linear-cost subtree-transfer distance between weighted phylogenies with performance ratio 2 .

    Notes: Abstract  The coding region of the matK gene was sequenced to infer the phylogeny of the family Magnoliaceae. Phylogenetic analyses of 21 matK sequences representing ten genera of Magnoliaceae and three outgroups suggest relationships among both subfamilies and genera. Monophyly of the subfamily Liriodendroideae (the genus Liriodendron) and the subfamily Magnolioideae is strongly supported, respectively. Within the subfamily Magnolioideae, three clades are formed: (1) the genus Magnlietia, (2) the subgenus Magnolia, and (3) the subgenus Yulania, with the genera Michelia, Paramichelia, Tsoongiodendron, Alcimandra, Kmeria, Parakmeria and Manglietiastrum. However, the genus Magnolia is shown to be a polyphyletic group, and the genus Michelia a paraphyletic group. Relatively low sequence divergences are detected among genera of the the subfamily Magnolioideae, ranging from 0.14% to 1.70%, especially in the tribe Micheliinae (0.14–0.98%). Molecular evidence from matK sequence data suggests that the phylogenetic positions and the delimitation of the eight genera Magnolia, Michelia, Tsoongiodendron, Paramichelia, Alcimandra, Kmeria, Parakmeria and Manglietiastrum need to be reconsidered.

    Notes: Abstract Based on four UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST) IIIa-j direct plates which had been digitized by the Automated Plate Measuring System (APM), a detailed identification of the disk galaxies in the Virgo cluster has been carried out. The certain and possible member galaxies are mainly selected from the updated Catalogue of 2096 Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster Area (VCC). The area of this identification covers a ∼ 85 square degree region centered on this cluster. As a result, we compiled a new catalogue of 340 certain and possible member disk galaxies, including 85 lenticulars (SO), 136 spirals (S) and 119 irregulars (Irr), where the APM-measured values of the position angle (P.A.) and diameters of 299 disk galaxies are provided. For at least 149 galaxies, the values of the P.A. and diameters are published for the first time. Comparison between the APM-measured P.A. and diameters of galaxies and those given by the Uppsala General Catalog of Galaxies (UGC) demonstrates the reliability of our data. The statistical properties and completeness of this database are also discussed. Compared with the UGC-given P.A. and diameters which were determined by eyes, our data has no selection effect owing to the instrument measurements. Within our searching region, this might be the largest and relatively complete photometric database published so far for investigating the spatial orientation of the spin vectors of galaxies in the Virgo cluster.

    Notes: Abstract. Quantum field theories based on non-commutative space-time (NCQFT) have been extensively studied recently. However no NCQFT model which can uniquely describe the strong and electroweak interactions has been constructed. This prevents one to make a consistent and systematic study of non-commutative space-time. In this work we construct a NCQFT model based on the trinification gauge group $SU(3)_C\times SU(3)_{{L}}\times SU(3)_{R}$ . A unique feature of this model, that all matter fields (fermions and Higgs bosons) are assigned to (anti-) fundamental representations of the factor SU(3) groups, allows us to construct a NCQFT model for strong and electroweak interactions and their unification without ambiguities. This model provides an example which allows one to make a consistent and systematic study of non-commutative space-time phenomenology. We also comment on some related issues regarding extensions to E6 and $U(3)_C\times U(3)_{L}\times U(3)_{R}$ models.

    Notes: Abstract The vesicle formations of 1:1 cationic-anionic surfactants in various nonaqueous polar solvents and their aqueous mixtures were investigated. Outstanding vesicle-forming capability and stability of cationic and anionic surfactants were found in nonaqueous polar solvents and their aqueous mixtures except for in formamide. A small amount of formamide destroys the vesicles formed by cationic-anionic surfactants in aqueous solutions. These results could be very well explained based on the effect of the medium dielectric constant.
