Abstract The change of the drawing behaviour of polyethylene is studied as a function of molecular weight and crystallization pressure. The results are interpreted using the entanglement concept for the correlation between draw ratio, tensile modulus and molecular weight. Pressure crystallization of the starting material appears to reduce the number of entanglements formed during the drawing process and increases the maximum obtainable tensile modulus for samples of medium molecular weight.
