Notes: Abstract The linear heat transport of helium II contained in porous powder samples with mean pore diameters of 1.25µm, 0.17µm and 0.02µm was systematically studied in the temperature range between 0.8 K and 2 K. The effective thermal conductivity was determined by steady-state heat flow measurements and the effective thermal diffusivity by transitory temperature measurements. The experimental results are interpreted by a simple theoretical model. In the framework of this model the linear heat transport consists of two contributions: the laminar flow of the normal fluid (T≳1.4 K) and a diffusion mechanism (T≲1.4 K). At low temperatures (T≲1.2 K) the mean free paths of the elementary excitations of helium II become greater than the pore diameters. In this range, the heat flow is limited by scattering of the elementary excitations with the walls of the pores and can be described by a kinetic model. Good agreement between theory and experiment is obtained in the total temperature range investigated.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the beam energy dependence of neutron and proton squeeze-out in collisions of197Au+197Au atE/A=400—800 MeV. The azimuthal anisotropy that describes the enhanced emission of mid-rapidity neutrons perpendicular to the reaction plane rises strongly with the transverse momentum of the neutrons. This dependence of the azimuthal anisotropy follows a universal curve — independent of beam energy — if the neutron momenta are measured in fractions of the projectile momentum per mass unit. Analogously, the kinetic energy spectra of mid-rapidity neutrons exhibit a universal behaviour as a function of the kinetic energy of the projectile.

Notes: Abstract TheRhizobium meliloti C4-dicarboxylate transport (Dct) system is essential for an effective symbiosis with alfalfa plants. C4-dicarboxylates are the major carbon source taken up by bacteroids. Genetic analysis of Dct− mutant strains led to the isolation of thedct carrier genedctA and the regulatory genesdctB anddctD. The carrier genedctA is regulated in free-living cells by the alternative sigma factor RpoN and the two-component regulatory system DctB/D. In addition, DctA is involved in its own regulation, possibly by interacting with DctB. In bacteroids, besides the DctB/DctD system an additional symbiotic activator is thought to be involved indctA expression. Further regulation ofdctA in the free-living state is reflected by diauxic growth of rhizobia, with succinate being the preferred carbon source. The tight coupling of C4-dicarboxylate transport and nitrogen fixation is revealed by a reduced level of C4-dicarboxylate transport in nitrogenase negative bacteroids.

Notes: Summary New-born mice were X-rayed under extreme hypothermia in order to estimate the radioprotective effect of hypothermia on body weight, brain weight, development of cerebellum and the hematopoietic system. A protective effect was found in the rate of survival, in body and brain weight, in the cerebellum and in the number of erythrocytes. After hypothermia, the repair of damage in the cerebellum and the erythropoietic system starts earlier. The protected mature cerebellum shows an approximately normal status. Hypothermia does not prevent the initial decrease of lymphocytes caused by X-rays, and it produces a severe disturbance of hemoglobin content.

Notes: Summary In a clinical study we tested the following parameters: free fatty acids, beta-hydroxybutyrate, acid-base-balance, lactate, bilirubin, uric-acid, fructose, xylitole, glucose in blood and urine. The tests were executed in 9 patients who were undergoing stomac operations. The cardio pulmonary system of all patients was normal, and there was a homeostasis in water and electrolytes preoperatively. In combination with the amino-acids we received a ratio of 1/3n1/3n1 for glucose, levulose and xylitole. Totally, the patients received 0,36 g per kg body weight and per hour of carbohydrates. Beta-hydroxybutyrate, aceto-acetat, and free fatty acids show normal values under conditions of parenteral nutrition as well as lactate, uric acid, and acid-base-balance. The ratio of the different carbohydrates in serum and urine prove that the infusion time and volume were extremely favourable. The loss of carbohydrates in urine was very low.
