Notes: A computer program has been written for the determination of crystal-size distribution in a direction perpendicular to an (hkl) crystal plane, from a digitized XRD peak. It implements an information theory approach devised by Guérin, Alvarez, Rebollo Neira, Plastino & Bonetto [Acta Cryst. (1986), A42, 30–35] and Alvarez, Bonetto, Guérin, Plastino & Rebollo Neira [Powder Diffr. (1987), 2, 220–224]. The program has a fully automated operation mode and owing to the very restricted amount of input data this program is specially suited to users with a limited knowledge of crystal-size-determination methods.

Notes: An information theory approach is devised in order to obtain crystallite size distributions from X-ray line broadening. The method is shown to be superior to those based on Fourier expansions, as illustrated by numerical examples and a realistic situation. The powder model of Warren and Averbach is considered, in which the sample is thought of as a 'column-like' structure of unit cells perpendicular to the diffraction plane. Errors in excess of 100% arise as a result of truncating the diffraction peak. It is shown that, with the present approach, the corresponding figure is reduced to 5%, which confirms the power of information theory, and makes this method especially convenient in those cases in which there are large overlaps between the tails of two diffraction peaks.

Notes: Summary In this work, we present a rheological study of the non-isothermal curing reaction of an epoxy resin, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, with aliphatic amines of different functionalities. The reaction was carried out under a linear temperature program and the epoxy-amine mixtures were prepared at different epoxy groups to amine-hydrogen ratios. The effect of vitrification on the curing reaction is analyzed as a function of the heating rate. At low heating rates, the viscous modulus, G″, presents two peaks. The first peak is due to the vitrification-devitrification phenomenon that takes place during cure. At the second peak, the sample is completely cured and the decrement is G″ is only due to the temperature increment.

Notes: Abstract Escherichia coli was grown under various culture conditions. Variations in the levels of formate dehydrogenase which reacts with methylene blue (MB) or phenazine methosulfate (PMS) (N enzyme), formate dehydrogenase which reacts with benzyl viologen (BV) (H enzyme), formate oxidase and hydrogenlyase were analyzed. It was observed that formate dehydrogenase N and formate oxidase were induced by nitrate and repressed by oxygen. Synthesis of formate dehydrogenase H and hydrogenlyase was induced by formate and repressed by nitrate and oxygen. Selenite was required for the biosynthesis of formate dehydrogenase H and hydrogenlyase. Activity of both formate oxidase and hydrogenlyase was inhibited by azide and KCN but not by N-heptyl hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide (HOQNO); on the other hand, formate oxidase was extremely sensitive to HOQNO. Data were obtained which suggest that cytochromes are not involved in hydrogen formation from formate.

Notes: Abstract Latent infections of tissue-cultured Anthurium andraeanum Lind. caused by the blight pathogen, Xanthomonas campestris pv. dieffenbachiae (McCulloch & Pirone) Dye, were examined. The pathogen survived in or on callus for over 4 months without producing symptoms in callus or turbidity in the medium. The pathogen survived for more than 1 year on or within stage II shoots without producing symptoms and was successively transferred three times as latently infected shoots were multiplied. The pathogen did not grow or survive for more than 2 weeks in Murashige and Skoog medium lacking plant material. The addition of coconut water enhanced bacterial growth and produced turbidity in culture media. Latently infected in vitro anthuriums may be inoculum sources for subsequent outbreaks of the disease.

Notes: Abstract The Mössbauer spectra of three Fe/SiO2 catalysts with 5 wt% iron content show the presence of several Fe species and display different magnetic behaviours when the precursors are subjected to various thermal treatments. Based on the Mössbauer parameters and CO chemisorption measurements, the average crystal sizes of the catalysts are estimated and discussed in connection with the thermal pretreatment severity and magnetic properties of the samples.

Notes: Abstract A method has been developed for measuring90Sr activity in liquid samples. After concentrating strontium from the sample by coprecipitation with calcium phosphate, the residue is dissolved in 8N HNO3 and passed through an extraction chromatographic column (Sr.Spec) containing a new material that selectively retains strontium. This is eluted from the column with 0.05N HNO3 and counted by liquid scintillation. Measurement is performed using a double window method, that allows a rapid and single determination of90Sr.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract The effects of various salts on the kinetics of ferrocyanide oxidation by periodate are reported. The reaction exhibits salt effects of low specificity at low concentrations of the added salts (〈0.1 M). At higher concentrations, the effectiveness order for alkaline cations is Li+〉K+〉Na+ and tetralkylammonium ions have a comparable (Et4N+) or even greater (Me4N+) accelerating effects than alkaline cations.

Notes: Abstract Plutonium isotopic ratios have been calculated in soils contaminated by the Palomares accident which occurred in 1966 (Almería, Southeastem Spain). Contrasted techniques have been used to determine the radionuclide activities:238Pu and238+240Pu were analysed by α-spectrometry prior purification on anion-exchange resins, the ratio239Pu/240Pu was estimated by α-spectra deconvolution and241Pu was directly measured by liquid scintillation counting and indirectly through quantification of in-grown241Am from aged plutonium discs. The mean activity ratios238Pu/239Pu,239Pu/240Pu,241Pu/239Pu, backdated to 1966, were 0.027±0.002 (1σ), 4.5±0.2 (1σ) and 8.2±0.8 (1σ), respectively, characterizing the accident of Palomares as the source term of the measured plutonium.
