Notes: [Auszug] Oxidative damage to DNA has been proposed to have a role in cancer and ageing. Oxygen-free radicals formed during normal aerobic cellular metabolism attack bases in DNA, and 7,8-dihydro-8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) is one of the adducts formed. Eukaryotic replicative DNA polymerases replicate DNA ...

Notes: Summary The influence of ultrasonic waves on the hydrogen ion concentration of several colloids have been studied It has been found that the sols of antimony sulphide, arsenious sulphide, stannic hydroxide, chromium hydroxide, vanadium pentoxide and manganese dioxide show slight decrease in pH values. On the other hand the sols of prussian blue, copper ferrocyanide, uranium ferrocyanide, aluminium hydroxide and cerium hydroxide show an increase and that of ferric arsenate, ferric phosphate and ferric hydroxide do not show any change in pH values. Further the sols of antimony sulphide, arsenic sulphide, manganese dioxide and uranium ferrocyanide coagulate on prolonged exposure and ceric hydroxide sol sets to a gel.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das Vanadium-Pentoxyd-Sol zeigt, wenn Ultraschall ausgesetzt, einen steigenden Wert an Wasserstoffionen-Konzentration und LeitfÄhigkeit.
Notes: Summary The vanadium pentoxide sol when exposed to ultrasonic waves shows an increased value of hydrogen ion concentration and conductivity. It is postulated that this change is due to either supersaturation of metavanadic acid in presence of the high frequency waves or to the production of peroxyvanadic acid under the influence of hydrogen peroxide which is known to be formed in traces under these conditions. The change in viscosity of vanadium pentoxide sol in presence of electrolytes under the influence of ultrasonic waves has also been recorded.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ultraschallbestrahlung (1 MHz, 225 W/cm2) erlauben die Untersuchung der Entfärbung von wä\riger Safranin-O-Lösung.
Notes: Summary Ultrasonic radiation from Mullard generator with barium titanate crystal as transducer having a frequency of 1 Mc/sec and power output 225 w/sq. cm. have been used to study the decolorization of aqueous solution of safranine O. Absorption curves obtained from spectrophotometric data demonstrate the fading of the colour of the dyestuff with the time of exposure. Diacetone alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, dioxan and ether inhibit the decolorization. Hydrogen peroxide does not help the decolorization. Cavitation is responsible for breaking the molecules of the dye.

Notes: Summary The influence of ultrasonic waves at 1 MC/sec and 225 watts/cm2 power on the negatively charged manganese dioxide sol has been investigated in an atmosphere of nitrogen and thereby excluding oxygen. The stability of the sol on exposure to ultrasonic waves is affected in a similar way as in presence of air but the extent to which the sol gets unstable on exposure is less in the absence of oxygen than in its presence. The specific conductivity increases but hydrogen ion concentration remains practically constant as the time of exposure increases.

Notes: Abstract Metal-organic acid interactions with special reference to their plant availability have been studied. The role of organic acids in the mobilization of Cr by converting it into labile organically bound form, enhancing its availability, is highlighted. Pot experiments are conducted to investigate the effect of various organic acids on the uptake and translocation of root absorbed trivalent and hexavalent chromium by maize (z. mays) plants grown in sand and soil culture. Statistically significant increases in chromium accumulation from CrIII-treated plants in the presence of increasing concentrations of organic acid suggest the existence of CrIII – organic acid interactions in the soil plant system. In order to support the above mentioned hypothesis of formation of organically bound CrIII in the presence of various organic acids (carboxylic and amino acids), separate experiments have been performed to synthesize and estimate its respective organically bound forms. Amendments with organic acids, however, do not appear to markedly affect chromium accumulation from CrVI treatment. The results are discussed on the basis of the potential of organic acids to form complexes with CrIII.

Notes: Summary The RAD7 and RAD23 genes of S. cerevisiae affect the efficiency of excision repair of UV-damaged DNA. We have examined the UV survival of strains carrying the rad7 or rad23 deletion mutation in combination with deletion mutations in genes affecting different DNA repair pathways. As expected, the rad7Δ and rad23Δ mutations interact epistatically with the excision repair defective rad1Δ mutation, and synergistically with the rad6Δ and rad52Δ mutations that affect the postreplication repair and recombinational repair pathways, respectively. However, the rad7Δrad6Δ and the rad23Δrad6Δ mutants exhibit the same level of UV sensitivity as the radlΔrad6Δ mutant. This observation is of interest since, in contrast to the rad7Δ or the rad23Δ mutations, the rad1Δ mutant is very UV sensitive and highly excision defective. This observation suggests that RAD6 and RAD7 and RAD23 genes compete for the same substrate during DNA repair.
