Description: During 2009, a total landings of 226 453 t small pelagic fish was recorded, this amount is below by 8% to the one recorded in 2008 (245,791 t). The group classified as "other" was mostly landed (44.8%), followed in order of abundance by macarela (16.2%). The specie with the lowest landing was sardina redonda (1154 t). The fleet has focused its activities north of the Santa Elena Peninsula and to a lesser extent in the area of the Gulf of Guayaquil. The number of active vessels was 96, being class I and II ships the most abundant. A huge percentage of individuals landed macarela and pinchagua had sizes smaller than the length at first maturity (28.8 and 22.6 cm, respectively), which continues to affect the biological cycle of the species; these species are found mostly in mature virgin and / or recovery-stage II- (pinchagua, 60% macarela, 48%).
