Description: A negative-stiffness damper (NSD) that incorporates eccentric columns and high-stiffness springs is proposed for vibration mitigation from drilling equipment to a semi-submersible platform. Eccentric columns are considered as negative-stiffness elements, which can provide high static stiffness and achieve negative stiffness with hysteresis energy dissipation caused by buckling mode transition under dynamic conditions. With the assistance of high-stiffness springs, the damper possesses a hysteresis loop that can dissipate vibration energy and mitigate responses. Firstly, the hysteresis characteristics and negative stiffness of eccentric columns are analyzed. Then, the design principle of the NSD is derived, and several characteristics required for applications are investigated. In addition, an NSD system is designed for a target drilling mud pump based on measured data, and the mitigation performance is analyzed by comparing the vibration responses between cases of the proposed NSD system and the steel pedestal. The results demonstrate that the proposed system can effectively reduce the width of affected coverage and the magnitudes of vibration responses. The investigations performed in this paper not only provide the design principle of the new damper, but also prove the great potential of the proposed damper in vibration mitigation from drilling equipment to the hull of the platform.

Description: More recently, an increasing number of object-attached sensors are publishing their real-time state on the Internet by using state-of-the-art Web technologies, which make the sensor search service extremely important for the Web of Things (WoT). However, the existing issues that the sensor search service is facing bring huge challenges to the design of matching state estimation scheme. In this paper, an architecture of high-efficiency content-based sensor search system is depicted to provide a prototype system for sensor search. And then a matching state estimation scheme is proposed in detail, including a sensor state prediction approach to accurately estimate future sensor readings and a match estimating and verifying approach to effectively classify and verify candidate sensors, in order to enhance the performance of our search system. Simulation results show that our matching state estimation scheme dramatically reduces the communication overhead of search system and achieves excellent performance in terms of recall ratio and precision ratio.

Description: This study investigates the deadline of the discrete time-cost tradeoff problem (DTCTP-D) with generalized precedence relations (GPRs). This problem requires modes to be assigned to the activities of a project such that the total cost is minimized and the total completion time and the precedence constraints are satisfied. Anomalies under GPRs are irreconcilable with many current theories and methods. We propose a preprocessing technology, an equivalent simplification approach, which is an effective method for solving large-scale complex problems. We first study a way to deal with the anomalies under GPRs, such as the reduce (increase) in project completion as a consequence of prolonging (shortening) an activity, and discover relationships between time floats and path lengths. Then, based on the theories, we transform the simplification into a time float problem and design a polynomial algorithm. We perform the simplification and improve the efficiency of the solution by deleting redundant calculation objects.

Description: The rock mechanical properties under the effect of high temperature present a great significance on underground rock engineering. In this paper, the mechanical properties of sandstones, marbles, and granites under real-time heating were investigated with a servo-controlled compression apparatus. The results show that mechanical behaviours of all the three types of rocks are influenced by real-time heating to different degrees. Due to thermal cracking, the uniaxial compressive strengths decrease as the heating temperature rises from room temperature to 400°C. Above 400°C, the sandstone exhibits a significant increase in UCS because of the sintering reaction. The sintering enlarges the contact area and friction between crystal grains in the sandstone, which strengthens the bearing capacity. For marbles, the UCS continues to decrease from 400°C to 600°C due to thermal cracking. However, the carbonate in the marble begins to decompose after 600°C. The generated particles would fill the cracks in the marble and increase the strength. For granites, their UCS presents a sharp decline after 400°C because of thermal cracking. For all rock elastic modulus, they present a decreasing trend, and this indicates that the rock’s ability to resist deformation gradually weakens under the effect of temperature. In general, rock mechanical behaviours under real-time heating differ from those in normal situations, and use of the parameters presented here is important for underground rock engineering related to high temperature and can improve the precision in theoretical and numerical analysis.

Description: Thermal insulation gunite (TIG) in roadways is an effective method for regional thermal hazard control in mines. The development of mine TIG materials is the foundation of thermal insulation technique. However, some conventional and advanced insulation materials are inapplicable to deep mines which are rather humid with high in situ stress and high geo-temperature. In this study, a kind of fly ash-inorganic mineral TIG material was developed and applied to the modelling of a high geo-temperature roadway. Moreover, the thermal insulation effect of the TIG layer was analyzed, and the temperature field characteristics of the TIG surrounding rock were discussed. Results reveal that (1) the TIG layer has a significant impact on the heat release of the wall and stability of the surrounding rock temperature field; (2) the initial temperature disturbance times, temperature disturbance ranges, and temperature drop rates differ with whether a TIG layer exists or not; (3) after the TIG roadway starts to be ventilated, the thermal flux densities tend to be consistent, which indicates the end of temperature disturbance; besides, the dimensionless temperature shares an exponential relation with the dimensionless radius; and (4) the characteristics of temperature drops vary with the radial positions of the surrounding rock. The research results provide a certain reference for thermal hazard control, temperature prediction, and ventilation network adjustment.

Description: Stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) which is generated by horizontal drilling with multistage hydraulic fracturing governs the production in the shale gas reservoirs. Although microseismic data has been used to estimate the SRV, it is high-priced and sometimes overestimated. Additionally, the effect of stress sensitivity on SRV is not considered in abnormal overpressure areas. Thus, the objective of this work is to characterize subsurface fracture networks with stress sensitivity of permeability through the shale gas well production data of the early flowback stage. The flowback regions are first identified with the flowback data of two shale gas wells in South China. Then, we measured the permeability stress sensitivity of the core after fracturing, coupled to the dynamic relative permeability (DRP) calculation to obtain an accurate and simple DRP curve. After that, a comprehensive model is built considering dynamic two-phase relative permeability function and stress sensitivity. Finally, we compared the calculated results with the microseismic data. The results show that the proposed model could reasonably predict the SRV using the flowback data after fracturing. Additionally, compared with the microseismic data, the stress sensitivity should be included, especially in the abnormal overpressure block. It is believed that this mathematical model is accurate and useful. The work provides an efficient approach to estimate stimulated reservoir volume in the shale gas reservoirs.

Description: In this paper, a fractional-order land model with Holling-II type transformation rate and time delay is investigated. First of all, the variable-order fractional derivative is defined in the Caputo type. Second, by applying time delay as the bifurcation parameter, some criteria to determine the stability and Hopf bifurcation of the model are presented. It turns out that the time delay can drive the model to be oscillatory, even when its steady state is stable. Finally, one numerical example is proposed to justify the validity of theoretical analysis. These results may provide insights to the development of a reasonable strategy to control land-use change.

Description: Objective. To evaluate the diagnostic value of apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Methods. Databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Wanfang Med online, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and China Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) were searched for literatures in English or Chinese. No limitations on the date. The sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratio, and diagnostic odds ratio were pooled for meta-analysis. The symmetric receiver operator characteristic curve (SROC) and Fagan’s Nomogram were drawn, and metaregression and subgroup analysis were used to explore the source of heterogeneity. Results. A total of 13 studies, including 2662 cases and 8843 controls, were analyzed. The combined sensitivity (SEN) was 0.62 (95% CI (0.58-0.66)), specificity (SPE) was 0.84 (95% CI (0.81-0.86)), the positive likelihood ratio was 3.8 (95% CI (3.3-4.3)), and the negative likelihood ratio was 0.45 (95% CI (0.41-0.49)). The area under the ROC curve was 0.80, and the diagnostic ratio (DOR) was 8. Neither publication bias was detected in Deeks’ funnel plot, nor threshold effect was shown in the SROC. Metaregression analysis showed that the diagnostic methods, experimental design, and sample size contributed to the heterogeneity in SEN, while the diagnostic methods, experimental design, blind evaluation on test results, and sample size contributed to the heterogeneity in SPE. When the pretest probability was set as 50%, the posterior probability in Fagan’s Nomogram was 79%, the positive likelihood ratio (LRP) was 5, and the negative likelihood ratio (LRN) was 0.42. Conclusions. AD could neither be confirmed nor excluded by the APOE genotype test. The sensitivity and specificity of the APOE gene test were relatively low in the diagnosis of AD. The diagnostic value of APOE ε4 gene in AD was moderate; it might play an important role in the prevention of AD.

Description: Based on finite difference method, a mathematical model and a numerical model written by Fortran language were established in the paper. Then a series of experiments were conducted to figure out the evolution law of temperature field in high geothermal roadway. Research results indicate that temperature disturbance range increases gradually as the unsteady heat conduction goes on and it presents power function relationship with dimensionless time. Based on the case analysis, there is no distinct expansion of temperature disturbance range after four years of ventilation, when the temperature disturbance rangeR=13.6.

Description: Smartphone photoplethysmography is a newly developed technique that can detect several physiological parameters from the photoplethysmographic signal obtained by the built-in camera of a smartphone. It is simple, low-cost, and easy-to-use, with a great potential to be used in remote medicine and home healthcare service. However, the determination of the optimal region of interest (ROI), which is an important issue for extracting photoplethysmographic signals from the camera video, has not been well studied. We herein proposed five algorithms for ROI selection: variance (VAR), spectral energy ratio (SER), template matching (TM), temporal difference (TD), and gradient (GRAD). Their performances were evaluated by a 50-subject experiment comparing the heart rates measured from the electrocardiogram and those from the smartphone using the five algorithms. The results revealed that the TM and the TD algorithms outperformed the other three as they had less standard error of estimate (
