Description: Estimating the covariance matrix of a random vector is essential and challenging in large dimension and small sample size scenarios. The purpose of this paper is to produce an outperformed large-dimensional covariance matrix estimator in the complex domain via the linear shrinkage regularization. Firstly, we develop a necessary moment property of the complex Wishart distribution. Secondly, by minimizing the mean squared error between the real covariance matrix and its shrinkage estimator, we obtain the optimal shrinkage intensity in a closed form for the spherical target matrix under the complex Gaussian distribution. Thirdly, we propose a newly available shrinkage estimator by unbiasedly estimating the unknown scalars involved in the optimal shrinkage intensity. Both the numerical simulations and an example application to array signal processing reveal that the proposed covariance matrix estimator performs well in large dimension and small sample size scenarios.

Description: The combination of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signal processing with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) technique is one favored solution in wireless communication systems for enhancing data rate. However, the computational complexity is also linear increased with the number of data streams. Generally, multiple finite impulse response (FIR) interpolations and decimations are added to solve the multiple data streams in a MIMO OFDM system, which cause a large increase in the hardware cost. In this paper, two multipath pipelined polyphase structures for FIR interpolation and decimation to efficiently deal with the simultaneous multiple data streams are proposed. According to the proposed structures, M simultaneous data streams can be supported in the M-component polyphase interpolation or decimation with only one set of computation units. Implementation examples show that up to 56% reduction of silicon area can be obtained over the traditional polyphase structures.

Description: A high-speed low-complexity hardware interleaver/deinterleaver is presented. It supports all 77 802.11n high-throughput (HT) modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) with short and long guard intervals and the 8 non-HT MCSs defined in 802.11a/g. The paper proposes a design methodology that distributes the three permutations of an interleaver to both write address and read address. The methodology not only reduces the critical path delay but also facilitates the address generation. In addition, the complex mathematical formulas are replaced with optimized hardware structures in which hardware intensive dividers and multipliers are avoided. Using 0.13 um CMOS technology, the cell area of the proposed interleaver/deinterleaver is 0.07 mm2, and the synthesized maximal working frequency is 400 MHz. Comparison results show that it outperforms the three other similar works with respect to hardware complexity and max frequency while maintaining high flexibility.

Description: For SLA-aware service composition problem (SSC), an optimization model for this algorithm is built, and a hybrid multiobjective discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm (HMDPSO) is also proposed in this paper. According to the characteristic of this problem, a particle updating strategy is designed by introducing crossover operator. In order to restrain particle swarm’s premature convergence and increase its global search capacity, the swarm diversity indicator is introduced and a particle mutation strategy is proposed to increase the swarm diversity. To accelerate the process of obtaining the feasible particle position, a local search strategy based on constraint domination is proposed and incorporated into the proposed algorithm. At last, some parameters in the algorithm HMDPSO are analyzed and set with relative proper values, and then the algorithm HMDPSO and the algorithm HMDPSO+ incorporated by local search strategy are compared with the recently proposed related algorithms on different scale cases. The results show that algorithm HMDPSO+ can solve the SSC problem more effectively.

Description: Based on comparative study on two amorphous silicon photovoltaic walls (a-Si PV walls), the temperature distribution and the instant power were tested; and with EnergyPlus software, similar models of the walls were built to simulate annual power generation and air conditioning load. On typical sunshine day, the corresponding position temperature of nonventilated PV wall was generally 0.5~1.5°C higher than that of ventilated one, while the power generation was 0.2%~0.4% lower, which was consistent with the simulation results with a difference of 0.41% in annual energy output. As simulation results, in summer, comparing the PV walls with normal wall, the heat per unit area of these two photovoltaic walls was 5.25 kWh/m2 (nonventilated) and 0.67 kWh/m2 (ventilated) higher, respectively. But in winter the heat loss of nonventilated one was smaller, while ventilated PV wall was similar to normal wall. To annual energy consumption of heating and cooling, the building with ventilated PV wall and normal wall was also similar but slightly better than nonventilated one. Therefore, it is inferred that, at low latitudes, such as Zhuhai, China, air gap ventilation is suitable, while the length to thickness ratio of the air gap needs to be taken into account.

Description: To improve the CNC machine tools precision, a thermal error modeling for the motorized spindle was proposed based on time series analysis, considering the length of cutting tools and thermal declined angles, and the real-time error compensation was implemented. A five-point method was applied to measure radial thermal declinations and axial expansion of the spindle with eddy current sensors, solving the problem that the three-point measurement cannot obtain the radial thermal angle errors. Then the stationarity of the thermal error sequences was determined by the Augmented Dickey-Fuller Test Algorithm, and the autocorrelation/partial autocorrelation function was applied to identify the model pattern. By combining both Yule-Walker equations and information criteria, the order and parameters of the models were solved effectively, which improved the prediction accuracy and generalization ability. The results indicated that the prediction accuracy of the time series model could reach up to 90%. In addition, the axial maximum error decreased from 39.6 μm to 7 μm after error compensation, and the machining accuracy was improved by 89.7%. Moreover, the -direction accuracy can reach up to 77.4% and 86%, respectively, which demonstrated that the proposed methods of measurement, modeling, and compensation were effective.

Description: Bipartite network projection method has been recently employed for personal recommendation. It constructs a bipartite network between users and items. Treating user taste for items as resource in the network, we allocate the resource via links between user nodes and item nodes. However, the taste model employed by existing algorithms cannot differentiate “dislike” and “unrated” cases implied by user ratings. Moreover, the distribution of resource is solely based on node degrees, ignoring the different transfer rates of the links. To enhance the performance, this paper devises a negative-aware and rating-integrated algorithm on top of the baseline algorithm. It enriches the current user taste model to encompass “like,” “dislike,” and “unrated” information from users. Furthermore, in the resource distribution stage, we propose to initialize the resource allocation according to user ratings, which also determines the resource transfer rates on links afterward. Additionally, we also present a scalable implementation in the MapReduce framework by parallelizing the algorithm. Extensive experiments conducted on real data validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

Description: With the rapid development of nuclear power industry, simulating and analyzing the reactor transient are of great significance for the nuclear safety. The traditional diffusion theory is not suitable for small volume or strong absorption problem. In this paper, we have studied the application of discrete ordinates method in the numerical solution of space-time kinetics equation. The fully implicit time integration was applied and the precursor equations were solved by analytical method. In order to improve efficiency of the transport theory, we also adopted some advanced acceleration methods. Numerical results of the TWIGL benchmark problem presented demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of this methodology.

Description: In order to address the problem with titania distribution and recovery, series of Ti0.91O2/CFA photocatalysts (Ti0.91O2/CFA-, and ) were fabricated by assembling Ti0.91O2 nanosheets on coal fly ash (CFA) microspheres via the layer-by-layer assembly (LBLA) process and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), N2-sorption, and ultraviolet-visible absorption (UV-vis) techniques. The SEM images and UV-vis spectra illustrated that Ti0.91O2 nanosheets were immobilized successfully on the CFA by the LBLA approach and changed the characteristics of CFA noticeably. The photocatalytic activity of Ti0.91O2/CFA was evaluated by the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV irradiation. The results demonstrated that Ti0.91O2/CFA-6 showed the best photocatalytic activity among the series of Ti0.91O2/CFA irradiated for 60 min, with a decoloration rate above 43%. After photocatalysis, the Ti0.91O2/CFA could be easily separated and recycled from aqueous solution and Ti0.91O2 nanosheets were still anchored on the CFA.

Description: This paper discusses a discrete multispecies Lotka-Volterra mutualism system. We first obtain the permanence of the system. Assuming that the coefficients in the system are almost periodic sequences, we obtain the sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique almost periodic solution which is globally attractive. In particular, for the discrete two-species Lotka-Volterra mutualism system, the sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique uniformly asymptotically stable almost periodic solution are obtained. An example together with numerical simulation indicates the feasibility of the main result.
