Description: The extraction of road centerline from the classified image is a fundamental image analysis technology. Common problems encountered in road centerline extraction include low ability for coping with the general case, production of undesired objects, and inefficiency. To tackle these limitations, this paper presents a novel accurate centerline extraction method using Gaussian mixture model (GMM) and subspace constraint mean shift (SCMS). The proposed method consists of three main steps. GMM is first used to partition the classified image into several clusters. The major axis of the ellipsoid of each cluster is extracted and deemed to be taken as the initial centerline. Finally, the initial result is adjusted using SCMS to produce precise road centerline. Both simulated and real datasets are used to validate the proposed method. Preliminary results demonstrate that the proposed method provides a comparatively robust solution for accurate centerline extraction from a classified image.

Description: A dual-wavelength pulse strategy is proposed to reduce the fading phenomenon in a phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (-OTDR). The theoretical basis behind this dual-wavelength pulse strategy is presented and an experimental setup is described to help validate the proposed strategy. Through the experimental tests, a 37.79% improvement in detection for available points along the fiber is achieved when 1550.000 nm and 1550.138 nm wavelength signals are applied. The different wavelength tests show that at least a 0.012 nm or 1.498 GHz difference should be applied in a dual-wavelength pulse and an average 30% detecting improvement can be achieved when one wavelength changes from 1549.950 nm to 1550.100 nm. In addition, the dual-wavelength strategy makes the system response more stable and consistent along the sensing optical fiber.

Description: In this study, a series of experiments of the full-scale physical model was employed to investigate the hydromechanical behaviours of the postearthquake landslide evolution, in forms of rill erosion and shallow headward failure on the rill bank slopes under unsaturated conditions. Soil-water characteristic curves (SWCC) were established using the Brooks-Corey (BC) and van Genuchten (VG) models. The stability of the shallow failure was then analyzed via a one-dimensional and unsaturated stability analysis model of the infinite slope. This measurement revealed that the preferential flow and the matrix flow coexisted when infiltration occurred and the VG model performs better in fitting the SWCC than the BC model. Consistent feedback between stability calculations and experimental observations enables the analysis of mechanisms of rill erosion and slope failure of postseismic landslide under the impact of preferential flow. Furthermore, the seepage-induced internal erosion phenomenon was observed in the experiment. This work thus provides a new perspective on the triggering mechanisms of debris flow during the postseismic period.

Description: Isomap is a widely used nonlinear method for dimensionality reduction. Landmark-Isomap (L-Isomap) has been proposed to improve the scalability of Isomap. In this paper, we focus on two important issues that were not taken into account in L-Isomap, landmark point selection and topological stability. At first, we present a novel landmark point selection method. It first uses a greedy strategy to select some points as landmark candidates and then removes the candidate points that are neighbours of other candidates. The remaining candidate points are the landmark points. The selection method can promote the computation efficiency without sacrificing accuracy. For the topological stability, we define edge density for each edge in the neighbourhood graph. According to the geometrical characteristic of the short-circuit edges, we provide a method to eliminate the short-circuit edge without breaking the data integrity. The approach that integrates L-Isomap with these two improvements is referred to as Robust L-Isomap (RL-Isomap). The effective performance of RL-Isomap is confirmed through several numerical experiments.

Description: The rapid growth of digital images has caused the traditional image retrieval technology to be faced with new challenge. In this paper we introduce a new approach for large-scale scene image retrieval to solve the problems of massive image processing using traditional image retrieval methods. First, we improved traditionalk-Means clustering algorithm, which optimized the selection of the initial cluster centers and iteration procedure. Second, we presented a parallel design and realization method for improvedk-Means algorithm applied it to feature clustering of scene images. Finally, a storage and retrieval scheme for large-scale scene images was put forward using the large storage capacity and powerful parallel computing ability of the Hadoop distributed platform. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method achieved good performance. Compared with the traditional algorithms with single node architecture and parallelk-Means algorithm, the proposed method has obvious advantages for use in large-scale scene image data retrieval in terms of retrieval accuracy, retrieval time overhead, and computational performance (speedup and efficiency, sizeup, and scaleup), which is a significant improvement from applying parallel processing to intelligent algorithms with large-scale datasets.

Description: The best estimation process of AP1000 Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) requires proper selections of parameters and models so as to obtain the most accurate results compared with the actual design parameters. Therefore, it is necessary to identify and evaluate the influences of these parameters and modeling approaches quantitatively and qualitatively. Based on the best estimate thermal-hydraulic system code RELAP5/MOD3.2, sensitivity analysis has been performed on core partition methods, parameters, and model selections in AP1000 Nuclear Power Plant, like the core channel number, pressurizer node number, feedwater temperature, and so forth. The results show that core channel number, core channel node number, and the pressurizer node number have apparent influences on the coolant temperature variation and pressure drop through the reactor. The feedwater temperature is a sensitive factor to the Steam Generator (SG) outlet temperature and the Steam Generator outlet pressure. In addition, the cross-flow model nearly has no effects on the coolant temperature variation and pressure drop in the reactor, in both the steady state and the loss of power transient. Furthermore, some fittest parameters with which the most accurate results could be obtained have been put forward for the nuclear system simulation.

Description: This paper describes a master-slave visual surveillance system that uses stationary-dynamic camera assemblies to achieve wide field of view and selective focus of interest. In this system, the fish-eye panoramic camera is capable of monitoring a large area, and the PTZ dome camera has high mobility and zoom ability. In order to achieve the precise interaction, preprocessing spatial calibration between these two cameras is required. This paper introduces a novel calibration approach to automatically calculate a transformation matrix model between two coordinate systems by matching feature points. In addition, a distortion correction method based on Midpoint Circle Algorithm is proposed to handle obvious horizontal distortion in the captured panoramic image. Experimental results using realistic scenes have demonstrated the efficiency and applicability of the system with real-time surveillance.
