    Description: Due to the information technology advancement, the feasibility for the establishment of mobile medical environments has been strengthened. Using RFID to facilitate the tracing of patients’ mobile position in hospital has attracted more attentions from researchers due to the demand on advanced features. Traditionally, the management of surgical treatment is generally manually operated and there is no consistent operating procedure for patients transferring among wards, surgery waiting rooms, operating rooms, and recovery rooms, resulting in panicky and urgent transferring work among departments and, thus, leading to delays and errors. In this paper, we propose a new framework using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology for a mobilized surgical process monitoring system. Through the active tag, an application management system used before, during, and after the surgical processes has been proposed. The concept of signal level matrix, SLM, was proposed to accurately identify patients and dynamically track patients’ location. By updating patient’s information real-time, the preprocessing time needed for various tasks and incomplete transfers among departments can be reduced, the medical resources can be effectively used, unnecessary medical disputes can be reduced, and more comprehensive health care environment can be provided. The feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed system are demonstrated with a number of experimental results.

    Description: Glued-laminated timber arches are widely used in gymnasiums, bridges, and roof trusses. However, studies on their mechanical behaviours and design methods are still insufficient. This paper investigates the in-plane loading capacity of circular glued-laminated timber arches made of Douglas fir. Experiments were conducted on four timber-arch models with different rise-to-span ratios under concentrated loads at mid-span and quarter-point locations. The structural responses, failure modes, and loading capacity of the timber arch specimens were obtained. The results show that the timber arches presented symmetric and antisymmetric deformation under mid-point and quarter-point loading conditions, respectively. The downward shifting of the neutral axis of the cross section was observed under mid-point loading condition, which contributes to higher loading capacity compared to that under quarter-point loading condition. The loading condition significantly affects the ultimate loads and the strain distribution in the cross section. Based on the design formula in current standards for timber structures, an equivalent beam-column method was introduced to estimate the loading capacity of the laminated timber arches under vertical concentrated loads. The moment amplification factor in the formula was compared and discussed, and the value provided in the National Design Specification for Wood Construction was recommended with acceptable accuracy.

    Description: High-frequency components are often discarded for data denoising when applying pure wavelet multiscale or empirical mode decomposition (EMD) based approaches. Instead, they may raise the problem of energy leakage in vibration signals. Hybrid EMD and wavelet packet (EMD-WP) is proposed to denoise Global Positioning System- (GPS-) based structure monitoring data. First, field observables are decomposed into a collection of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) with different characteristics. Second, high-frequency IMFs are denoised using the wavelet packet; then the monitoring data are reconstructed using the denoised IMFs together with the remaining low-frequency IMFs. Our algorithm is demonstrated on a synthetic displacement response of a 3-story frame excited by El Centro earthquake along with a set of Gaussian random white noises on different levels added. We find that the hybrid method can effectively weaken the multipath effect with low frequency and can potentially extract vibration feature. However, false modals may still exist by the rest of the noise contained in the high-frequency IMFs and when the frequency of the noise is located in the same band as that of effective vibration. Finally, real GPS observables are implemented to evaluate the efficiency of EMD-WP method in mitigating low-frequency multipath.
