    Description: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common malignant cancer in South China. Cisplatin is a classical chemotherapeutic employed for NPC treatment. Despite the use of cisplatin-based concurrent chemoradiotherapy, distant failure still confuses clinicians and the outcome of metastatic NPC remains disappointing. Hence, a potent systemic therapy is needed for this cancer. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) represents a promising new therapeutic target in cancer. We predicted that combining the conventional cytotoxic drug cisplatin with the novel molecular-targeted agent cetuximab demonstrates a strong antitumor effect on NPC cells. In this study, we selected HNE1 and CNE2 cells, which have been proved to possess different EGFR expression levels, to validate our conjecture. The two-drug regimen showed a significant synergistic effect in HNE1 cells but an additive effect in CNE2 cells. Our results showed that cisplatin-induced apoptosis was significantly enhanced by cetuximab in the high EGFR-expressing HNE1 cells but not in CNE2 cells. Further molecular mechanism study indicated that the EGFR/AKT pathway may play an important role in cell apoptosis via the mitochondrial-mediated intrinsic pathway and lead to the different antitumor effects of this two-drug regimen between HNE1 and CNE2 cells. Thus, the regimen may be applied in personalized NPC treatments.

    Description: The size and position of the damping ditch have a direct impact on the blasting vibration. In order to explore the effect of damping ditches of different sizes and positions, we investigated field blasting in the A3 area of the second phase of the Lufeng Nuclear Power Plant project. The simulation software ANSYS/LS-DYNA was used to simulate the vibration propagation of damping ditches with different depths, widths, and positions. Secondly, the vibration data of the corresponding measuring points were collected and the amplitude reduction was analyzed in different situations. An analysis of the numerical simulation results showed that an increase in the damping ditch width increased the vibration amplitude at the top of the building. The depth and position of the damping ditch were the main factors affecting the damping performance. A regression analysis was conducted using the Sadove equation for vibration velocity. It was found that the regression coefficient of the Sadove equation did not meet the required standards when a damping ditch was present. The vibration attenuation equations were fitted for the top and the base of the building. The results of this study provide reference data for the excavation and arrangement of damping ditches in practical applications.

    Description: Deer antlers are the only mammalian appendage capable of regeneration. We aimed to investigate the effect of red deer antler extract in regulating hair growth, using a mouse model. The backs of male mice were shaved at eight weeks of age. Crude aqueous extracts of deer antler were prepared at either 4°C or 100°C and injected subcutaneously to two separate groups of mice (n=9) at 1 mL/day for 10 consecutive days, with water as a vehicle control group. The mice skin quantitative hair growth parameters were measured and 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine was used to identify label-retaining cells. We found that, in both the 4°C and the 100°C deer antler aqueous extract-injection groups, the anagen phase was extended, while the number of BrdU-incorporated cells was dramatically increased. These results indicate that deer antler aqueous extract promotes hair growth by extending the anagen phase and regulating cell proliferation in the hair follicle region.
