Description: Prevention of water blocking and optimization of multiscale flow channels will increase gas production of tight reservoirs. Physical properties of samples from representative tight gas reservoirs were measured before and after high temperature treatment. Results show that, with the increase of treatment temperature, mass decreases, acoustic transit time increases, and permeability and porosity increase. Permeability begins to increase dramatically if treatment temperature exceeds the threshold value of thermal fracturing, which is 600~700°C, 500~600°C, 300~500°C, and 300~400°C for shale, mudstone, tight sandstone, and tight carbonate rock, respectively. Comprehensive analyses indicate that the mechanisms of heat treatment on tight porous media include evaporation and dehydration of water, change of mineral structure, generation of microfracture, and network connectivity. Meanwhile, field implementation is reviewed and prospected. Interpretations indicate that, according to the characteristics of multiscale mass transfer in tight gas formation, combining heat treatment with conventional stimulation methods can achieve the best stimulation result.

Description: In loss distribution approach (LDA), the most popular approach in operational risk modeling, frequency dependence and loss distribution dependence across business lines are two dependences which banks should consider. In practice, mainly for simplicity, many banks only model frequency dependence although they think that the impact of frequency dependence is insignificant. In this study, two approaches, respectively, models frequency dependence and loss distribution dependence, are introduced. Both approaches are modeled by copula function, which is capable of capturing nonlinear correlation. Based on the most comprehensive operational risk dataset of Chinese banking as far as we know, the operational risk capital charge of the overall Chinese banking is calculated by the two approaches. The results show that there is an obvious distinction between the capital calculated by modeling frequency dependence and the capital calculated by modeling loss dependence. The approach with very limited attention exactly yields a much larger capital result. So it is advised in this paper that banks should not just rely on the approach to modeling frequency dependence for it is natural and easy to deal with. A safer and more effective way for banks is to comprehensively take the results of the two kinds of approach into consideration.

Description: In order to study the propagation laws of blasting vibration waves in weak rock tunnels, the longitudinal and circumferential blasting vibration tests in Muzhailing Tunnel were carried out, and the measured data were analyzed and studied using the methods of Sadov’s nonlinear regression, Fourier transform, and Hilbert–Huang transform (HHT) to provide a reference for the optimization of blasting design of Muzhailing Tunnel or similar weak rock tunnels. The results showed that the tangential main frequency decreases rapidly and the radial main frequency decreases slowly with the increase of proportionate charge quantity. Under a certain charge quantity, as the distance from the explosion source increases, the spectrum width of the blasting vibration frequency becomes narrower, the overall energy is more concentrated, and the vibration frequency tends to be closer to the low frequency. At a certain distance from the explosive source, the frequency of blasting vibration decreases gradually, and the amplitude of low-frequency region increases with the increase of charge quantity. The vibration velocity on the left side of the tunnel is larger than that on the right side, and the vibration velocity at the vault and the arch foot of lower bench decreases rapidly, while the vibration velocity at the arch feet of upper bench and middle bench decreases slowly. The vibration frequencies of the left arch foot of the middle bench and the right arch foot of the upper bench are higher than those of other positions, while the frequencies of the left arch foot of the upper bench are the lowest. During tunnel blasting, the energy input to the strata media is mainly concentrated in the stage of the blasting of the cut hole. The blasting has more energy input to the left arch foot of the upper bench and the tunnel vault, which is consistent with the conclusion of frequency analysis.

Description: In this paper, the field monitoring method is used to study the variation of rock mass pressure during the construction of a tunnel in phyllite stratum, and three functions are used to fit and analyze the variation of rock mass pressure with deformation, excavation time, and space. The results show the following (1) When the deformation increases significantly, the rock mass pressure decreases firstly and then increases. This is caused by the insufficient bearing capacity of the rock mass in the arch foot of the supporting structure after the excavation of the upper bench, which leads to a settlement of supporting structure and surrounding rock. (2) Compared with other kinds of fitting functions, the logistic function can better characterize the variation of the pressure of surrounding rock with deformation, excavation time, and distance from the face. This paper provides a reliable reference for the design and construction of the tunnel in phyllite stratum. The logistic function can be used to present and predict the change of rock mass pressure with deformation, excavation time, and space in similar rock mass conditions.

Description: The number of super-large-span tunnels is increasing in both new construction and reconstruction projects in China recently. In super-large-span tunneling engineering, the deformation properties and mechanical behaviors of tunnel portal structure are more complex than those of common tunnel due to the flatter shape and larger construction span. The mechanical behaviors of rock mass change in response to different sequential excavation methods and supporting parameters. The upper bench CD method has been gradually applied in the construction of super-large-span tunnels in China. In this paper, the design parameters for the supporting structure of super-large-span tunnel were studied by the field monitoring and numerical modeling in a case study of Laohushan tunnel. It was found that the crown settlement was larger than the clearance convergence, and the stress of arch was greater than that of the side wall in tunnel portal section. The invert structure was flat with small curvature. Therefore, the shotcrete was mainly subjected to tensile stress. The use of H200 × 200 steel rib with spacing of 60 cm and C25 shotcrete with thickness of 30 cm is recommended. The results of this paper provide basis for the development of design specifications and construction standards for super-large-span tunnels and provide reference for similar projects in the future.

Description: Skyline query computes all the “best” elements which are not dominated by any other elements and thus is very important for decision-making applications. Recently, it is generalized toskybandquery and ak-skyband query returns those elements dominated by no more thank,of other elements. To incorporate the skyband operator into the stream engine for monitoring skybands over sliding windows, space usage estimation for skyband operator becomes a critical issue in the query optimizer. In this paper, we firstly introduce the skyband sketch as the cost model. Based on the cost model, we propose an approach for estimating the space usage of skyband operator over sliding windows of data streams under the assumptions of statistical independence across dimensions, no duplicate values over each dimension, and dimension domains totally ordered. Experiments verify that our approaches can estimate the space usage effectively over arbitrarily distributed data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that attempts to address the issue and proposes effective approaches to solve it.

Description: Greenhouses are closed environments that require careful climatic control, which can benefit from a system control method to cope with the high nonlinearity, complex coupling, and robustness of unknown disturbances. This paper presents a general framework for an integral sliding mode controller based on a disturbance observer combined with feedback linearization for a greenhouse temperature and humidity system. The first-principle greenhouse climate model is described as a standard affine nonlinear system. The feedback linearization control law is used to achieve a system consisting of two separate integrator channels for temperature and humidity. System compound disturbances are estimated by applying a sliding mode disturbance observer. Based on the observer, an integral sliding mode control is incorporated to enhance the robustness against uncertainties and guarantee satisfactory tracking performance even when there are unknown estimation errors. The validity and efficacy of the proposed control technique for greenhouse climate tracking were verified by comparison with simulation results obtained using the common sliding mode control method using feedback linearization without the disturbance observer. Based on this comparison, the developed controller shows a faster system response speed, higher control precision, and stronger anti-interference ability. This method can be applied to improve greenhouse climate control systems.

Description: The Pasternak double-parameter elastic foundation model of pipe-roof during the construction of tunnel exits is first established. Based on the portal project of Hanjiashan highway tunnel, an inclinometer is adopted to measure the settlement deformation of a pipe-roof and demonstrates the deformation law in tunnel exiting portals. The formulas for calculating the deflection and internal forces are derived to analyze the deformation of the pipe-roof in each excavation stage, and the results are compared with field monitoring data. Finally, the influences of excavation height, excavation footage, and stiffness of the pipe-roof on the support effect are investigated. Analysis indicates that the longitudinal settlement curve shows a groove distribution, which can be divided into five stages: micro, rapid, continuous, resilience, and stable deformation. Moreover, the subsidence rate reaches its maximum at the tunnel face. The influence of tunnel excavation on the deformation mainly has a range of 1.5 times the excavation height. To control the deflection of the pipe-roof, excavation height should be controlled in the range of 3.5 m, excavation footage should be controlled in the range of 1–1.4 m, and the diameter and thickness of the selected pipe-roof should be in the ranges of 89–159 mm and 5–8 mm, respectively.

Description: In this study, a field temperature test was performed to reveal the insulation effect of the thermal insulation layer installed at lining surface. The thermal insulation layer is made of polyphenolic, and the thickness is 7 cm. According to the test results, the temperature of the thermal insulation layer and lining continuously changes with the air temperature in the tunnel in an approximately trigonometric function. The temperature of tunnel lining without thermal insulation layer is close to the air temperature, which results in the lining frost in winter. The maximum temperature difference between the two sides of the thermal insulation layer can be 27°C. In the section whose buried depth is more than 11.4 m, the temperature of lining with thermal insulation layer in winter is mainly influenced by the cold air in the tunnel. When the monthly mean and lowest daily mean air temperature are lower than −10°C and −14.3°C in the coldest month, the temperature at the inner side of the thermal insulation layer is below 0°C. When the buried depth is less than 11.4 m, the temperature of lining is also influenced by the low temperature at ground surface. The temperature of lining is lower. The thicker thermal insulation layer and even active heat measure are needed. Therefore, the design of thermal insulation layer thickness should consider the air temperature distribution and tunnel buried depth along the tunnel length.

Description: In soft ground tunnels, feet-lock pipes have been widely used to decrease the concentration of load and settlement at the foot of steel ribs. This paper presents an analytical method to predict the vertical load and settlement at the foot of steel ribs with the support of the feet-lock pipe. First, the mechanical model of a steel rib and feet-lock pipe combined structure involving the ground reaction at the foot was proposed. In this model, the deformation compatibility among the steel rib, the feet-lock pipe, and the ground at the tunnel foot were considered, and an elastic foundation beam model with double parameter for the feet-lock pipe was proposed. Then, based on the proposed mechanical model, the analytical equations for predicting the vertical load and settlement at the foot of the steel rib were derived using structural analysis and beam theory on elastic foundation. The predicted vertical loads and settlements were validated by comparing with the results of field measurements and the Winkler foundation beam model for the feet-lock pipe, and the results show that the feet-lock pipe can effectively reduce the load acting on the ground, where the steel rib was installed, and finally improve the stability of the tunnel structure.
