Notes: The acid dissociation constants (Ka) of a series of 3,4-diaryl-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiones (1) were determined and were found to correlated linearly with Hammett substituent constants; log Ka = 1.06 σx - 11.01. Such a result indicates that 1 exists essentially in one tautomeric form namely the thione form. Reactions of 1 with hydrazonoyl chlorides 2 gave the thiohydrazides 5. Similiar reaction of 3-phenyl-1H(4H)- 1,2,4-triazole-5-thione 1g with 2a gave the thiohydrazide 5h which was converted into 1,3,5-triphenyl-1,2,4-triazolo[3,4-c]-1,2,4-triazole (9). The latter was also prepared from 3-phenyl-5-methylthio-4H-1,2,4-triazole (6) and 2a. The mechanism of the reaction of 1 with 2 is discussed.

Notes: A new boundary element formulation has been developed for two- and three-dimensional acoustic eigenfrequency analyses. The formulation is based on the well known method of constructing a solution of a differential equation in terms of a complementary function and particular integral. An advanced isoparametric implementation with automatic error control in the integration is used. A number of realistic examples of application to automotive acoustic cavities are described.

Notes: Reaction of benzonitrilium N-phenylimide 3a with dibenzalacetone 1 yielded a mixture of the mono- and biscycloadducts 8a and 11a in a 1:1 ratio. A similar reaction of 1 with ethoxycarbonylnitrilium N-phenylimide 3b afforded a mixture of the cycloadducts 7b, 8b, and 12b in a 1:3:6 ratio, respectively. The structures of these products were established by spectral analyses and chemical transformations. The results invalidate the previously reported structure 4a assigned for the biscycloadduct isolated from the reaction of 3a with 1. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A direct Boundary Element formulation and its numerical implementation for inelastic transient dynamic analysis of three-dimensional solids is presented. The formulation is based on an initial stress approach and is the first ever of its kind in the field of the Boundary Element Method. This formulation employs the Navier-Cauchy equation of motion, Graffi's dynamic reciprocal theorem, Stokes' fundamental solution and the Divergence theorem, together with Kinematical and Constitutive equations to obtain the pertinent integral equations of the problem in the time domain within the context of small displacement theory of elastoplasticity. The boundary integral equations are cast in an incremental form, in which elastoplastic relations of the incremental type are used for the material description. These equations are then solved using a time-stepping algorithm in conjunction with an iterative solution scheme to satisfy the constitutive relations. Higher order shape functions are used to approximate the field quantities in space as well as in time. Finally, the applicability of this methodology is demonstrated by presenting a few example problems.

Notes: The numerical implementation of the Direct Boundary Element formulation for time-domain transient analysis of three-dimensional solids is presented in a most general and complete manner. The present formulation employs the space and time dependent fundamental solution (Stokes' solution) and Graffi's dynamic reciprocal theorem to derive the boundary integral equations in the time domain. A time-stepping scheme is then used to solve the boundary initial value problem by marching forward in time. Higher order shape functions are used to approximate the field quantities in space as well as in time, and a combination of analytical (time-integration) and numerical (spatial-integration) integration is carried out to form a system of linear equations. At the end of each time step, these equations are solved to obtain the unknown field quantities at that time. Finally, the accuracy and reliability of this algorithm is demonstrated by solving a number of example problems and comparing the results against the available analytical and numerical solution.

Notes: In this work, the Direct and Indirect Boundary Element Methods as applied to dynamic soil structure interaction problems, are compared. Both the methods are used to find the dynamic stiffnesses of rigid surface and embedded foundations. For surface foundations, the results obtained by the two methods were very close for the frequency range considered, but for embedded foundations at higher frequencies, the Indirect Boundary Element Method produced erroneous values for the real part of vertical compliance. The possible reasons for this discrepancy are also studied in this paper.

Notes: The axial and lateral load-displacement response of single piles and pile groups during the secondary consolidation (creep) phase of deformation is obtained by idealizing the soil as a linear viscoelastic material. The boundary element method is used to model the soil halfspace and the piles, which are assumed to behave elastically, are idealized as beam-columns. By using the correspondence principle, the problem is solved in the Laplace transform domain and the final solution is obtained by numerical inversion of the transformed data. The salient features of the viscoelastic response are identified in several non-dimensional plots which encompass the spectrum of geometrical and material parameters commonly encountered in practice. The results of the analysis compare favourably with the limited data available in the literature.

Description: Network coding has been confirmed as a potential technology to improve performance of wireless mesh networks (WMNs); network coding has great advantages for sensor networks like minimization of communication needed to collect sensor data and error recovery. A few network coding aware routings have been proposed. However, these mechanisms detect coding opportunities through local traffic pattern checking, which hardly obtains optimal routes. This paper proposes a Distributed Dynamic Memetic Algorithm Based Coding Aware Routing (DDMCAR) for wireless mesh networks, which employs memetic algorithm to optimize routes and coding opportunities. This paper proposes an improvement over GCAR algorithm by employing memetic algorithm and also meme sharing among nodes to increase the chance of finding optimal solution and continuous monitoring and update of meme fitness to achieve a dynamic tracking of network conditions, and finally using most fit memes for load balancing elevating congestion. Through simulations on randomly generated wireless mesh networks, DDMCAR is to be shown to find optimal routes within a short time and achieve more improvements than GCAR.

Description: With recent advances in wireless sensor networks and embedded computing technologies, body sensor networks (BSNs) have become practically feasible. BSNs consist of a number of sensor nodes located and deployed over the human body. These sensors continuously gather vital sign data of the body area to be used in various intelligent systems in smart environments. This paper presents an intelligent design of the body sensor network based on virtual hypercube structure backbone termed as Smart BodyNet. The main purpose of the Smart BodyNet is to provide resilience for the BSN operation and reduce power consumption. Various experiments were carried out to show the performance of the Smart BodyNet design as compared to the state-of-the-art approaches.
