    Description: Reinforced concrete (R/C) frame buildings designed according to older seismic codes represent a large part of the existing building stock worldwide. Their structural elements are often vulnerable to shear or flexure-shear failure, which can eventually lead to loss of axial load resistance of vertical elements and initiate vertical progressive collapse of a building. In this study, a computationally efficient member-type finite element model for the hysteretic response of shear critical R/C frame elements up to the onset of axial failure is presented; it accounts for shear-flexure interaction and considers, for the first time, the localisation of shear strains, after the onset of shear failure, in a critical length defined by the diagonal failure plane. Its predictive capabilities are verified against experimental results of column and frame specimens and are shown to be accurate not only in terms of total response, but also with regard to individual deformation components. The accuracy, versatility, and simplicity of this finite element model make it a valuable tool in seismic analysis of complex R/C buildings with shear deficient structural elements.     Description: Traditional seismic design, like the one adopted in Eurocode 8 (EC8), is force-based and examining a single level of seismic action. In order to provide improved control of structural damage for different levels of seismic action, the new fib Model Code 2010 (MC2010) includes a fully fledged displacement-based and performance-based seismic design methodology. However, the level of complexity and computational effort of the MC2010 methodology is significantly increased. Hence, the use of automated optimization techniques for obtaining cost-effective design solutions becomes appealing if not necessary. This study employs genetic algorithms to derive and compare optimum seismic design solutions of reinforced concrete frames according to EC8 and MC2010. This is important because MC2010 is meant to serve as a basis for future seismic design codes. It is found that MC2010 drives to more cost-effective solutions than EC8 for regions of low seismicity and better or similar costs for regions of moderate seismicity. For high-seismicity regions, MC2010 may yield similar or increased structural costs. This depends strongly on the provisions adopted for selecting the set of ground motions. In this study, a hysteretic model capturing the local shear response of shear-deficient R/C elements is described in detail, with emphasis on post-peak behaviour; it differs from existing models in that it considers the localisation of shear strains after the onset of shear failure in a critical length defined by the diagonal failure planes. Additionally, an effort is made to improve the state of the art in post-peak shear response modelling, by compiling the largest database of experimental results for shear and flexure-shear critical R/C columns cycled well beyond the onset of shear failure and/or up to the onset of axial failure, and developing empirical relationships for the key parameters defining the local backbone post-peak shear response of such elements. The implementation of the derived local hysteretic shear model in a computationally efficient beam-column finite element model with distributed shear flexibility, which accounts for all deformation types, will be presented in a companion paper.     Description: In this work, we present an OpenMP implementation suitable for multiprogrammed environments on Intel-based SMP systems. This implementation consists of a runtime system and a resource manager, while we use the NanosCompiler to transform OpenMP-coded applications into code with calls to our runtime system. The resource manager acts as the operating system scheduler for the applications built with our runtime system. It executes a custom made scheduling policy to distribute the available physical processors to the active applications. The runtime system cooperates with the resource manager in order to adapt each application's generated parallelism to the number of processors allocated to it, according to the resource manager scheduling policy. We use the OpenMP version of the NAS Parallel Benchmark suite in order to evaluate the performance of our implementation. In our experiments we compare the performance of our implementation with that of a commercial OpenMP implementation. The comparison proves that our approach performs better both on a dedicated and on a heavily multiprogrammed environment.
