    Description: A methodology had been proposed for cross-matching visible infrared imaging radiometer suite (VIIRS) boat detections (VBD) with vessel monitoring system (VMS) tracks. The process involves predicting the probable location of VMS vessels at the time of each VIIRS data collection with an orbital model. Thirty-two months of Indonesian VMS data was segmented into fishing and transit activity types and then cross-matched with the VBD record. If a VBD record is found within 700 m and 5 s of the predicted location, it is marked as a match. The cross-matching indicates that 96% of the matches occur while the vessel is fishing. Small pelagic purse seiners account for 27% of the matches. Other gear types with high match rates include hand line tuna, squid dip net, squid jigging, and large pelagic purse seiners. Low match rates were found for gillnet, trawlers, and long line tuna. There is an indication that VMS vessels using submersible lights can be identified based on consistently low average radiances and match rates under 45%. Overall, VBD numbers exceed VMS vessel numbers in Indonesia by a nine to one ratio, indicating that VIIRS detects large numbers of fishing boats under the 30 Gross Tonnage (GT) level set for the VMS requirement. The cross-matching could be used to identify “dark” vessels that lack automatic identification system (AIS) or VMS.

    Description: This paper proposes a speed-loop periodic controller design for fault-tolerant surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) drive systems. Faulty conditions, including an open insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), a short-circuited IGBT, or a Hall-effect current sensor fault are investigated. The fault-tolerant SPMSM drive system using a speed-loop periodic controller has better performance than when using a speed-loop PI controller under normal or faulty conditions. The superiority of the proposed speed-loop-periodic-controller-based SPMSM drive system includes faster transient responses and better load disturbance responses. A detailed design of the speed-loop periodic controller and its related fault-tolerant method, including fault detection, diagnosis, isolation, and control are included. In addition, a current estimator is also proposed to estimate the stator current. When the Hall-effect current sensor is faulty, the estimated current is used to replace the current of the faulty sensor. A 32-bit digital signal processor, type TMS-320F-2808, is used to execute the fault-tolerant method and speed-loop periodic control. Measured experimental results validate the theoretical analysis. The proposed implementation of a fault-tolerant SPMSM drive system and speed-loop periodic controller design can be easily applied in industry due to its simplicity.

    Description: This research investigated the effect of adding different wt.% (0, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75) of GNP (graphene nanoplatelets) to improve the mechanical and moisture resistant properties of Kevlar (K)/cocos nucifera sheath (CS)/epoxy hybrid composites. The laminates were fabricated with different K/CS weight ratios such as 100/0 (S1), 75/25 (S2), 50/50 (S3), 25/75 (S4), and 0/100 (S5). The results revealed that the addition of GNP improved the tensile, flexural, and impact properties of laminated composites. However, the optimal wt.% of GNP varies with different laminates. A moisture diffusion analysis showed that the laminates with a 0.25 wt.% of GNP content efficiently hindered water uptake by closing all the unoccupied pores inside the laminate. Morphological investigations (SEM and FE-SEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope)) proved that the addition of GNP improved the interfacial adhesion and dispersion. Structural (XRD and FTIR) analyses reveals that at 0.25 wt.% of GNP, all the hybrid composites showed a better crystallinity index and the functional groups presents in the GNP can form strong interactions with the fibers and matrix. A statistical analysis was performed using One-way ANOVA, and it corroborates that the mechanical properties of different laminates showed a statistically significant difference. Hence, these GNP-modified epoxy hybrid composites can be efficiently utilized in load-bearing structures.

    Description: Landslides are one of the most disastrous natural hazards in Indonesia, in terms of number of fatalities and economic losses. Therefore, Balai Litbang Sabo (BLS) has developed a Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) for Indonesia, based on a Delft–FEWS (Flood Early Warning System) platform. This system utilizes daily precipitation data, a rainfall threshold method, and a Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-based Regional Slope-stability model (TRIGRS) to predict landslide occurrences. For precipitation data, we use a combination of 1-day and 3-day cumulative observed and forecasted precipitation data, obtained from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and the Indonesian Meteorological Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG). The TRIGRS model is used to simulate the slope stability in regions that are predicted to have a high probability of landslide occurrence. Our results show that the landslides, which occurred in Pacitan (28 November 2017) and Brebes regions (22 February 2018), could be detected by the LEWS from one to three days in advance. The TRIGRS model supports the warning signals issued by the LEWS, with a simulated factor of safety values lower than 1 in these locations. The ability of the Indonesian LEWS to detect landslide occurrences in Pacitan and Brebes indicates that the LEWS shows good potential to detect landslide occurrences a few days in advance. However, this system is still undergoing further developments for better landslide prediction.

    Description: Watermelons(Citrullus lanatus)are known to have sufficient amino acid content. In this study, watermelons grown and consumed in Malaysia were investigated for their amino acid content, L-citrulline and L-arginine, by the isocratic RP-HPLC method. Flesh and rind watermelons were juiced, and freeze-dried samples were used for separation and quantification of L-citrulline and L-arginine. Three different mobile phases, 0.7% H3P04, 0.1% H3P04, and 0.7% H3P04 : ACN (90 : 10), were tested on two different columns using Zorbax Eclipse XDB-C18and Gemini C18with a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min and a detection wavelength at 195 nm. Efficient separation with reproducible resolution of L-citrulline and L-arginine was achieved using 0.1% H3P04on the Gemini C18column. The method was validated and good linearity of L-citrulline and L-arginine was obtained withR2= 0.9956,y=0.1664x+2.4142andR2=0.9912,y=0.4100x+3.4850, respectively. L-citrulline content showed the highest concentration in red watermelon of flesh and rind juice extract (43.81 mg/g and 45.02 mg/g), whereas L-arginine concentration was lower than L-citrulline, ranging from 3.39 to 11.14 mg/g. The isocratic RP-HPLC method with 0.1% H3P04on the Gemini C18column proved to be efficient for separation and quantification of L-citrulline and L-arginine in watermelons.

    Description: Bricks of low elastic modulus are occasionally used in some developing countries, such as Indonesia and India. Most of the previous research efforts focused on masonry structures built with bricks of considerably high elastic modulus. The objective of this study is to quantify the equivalent elastic modulus of lower-stiffness masonry structures, when the mortar has a higher modulus of elasticity than the bricks, by employing finite element (FE) simulations and adopting the homogenization technique. The reported numerical simulations adopted the two-dimensional representative volume elements (RVEs) using quadrilateral elements with four nodes. The equivalent elastic moduli of composite elements with various bricks and mortar were quantified. The numerically estimated equivalent elastic moduli from the FE simulations were verified using previously established test data. Hence, a new simplified formula for the calculation of the equivalent modulus of elasticity of such masonry structures is proposed in the present study.
