Notes: [Auszug] As reported some months ago1, measurements of the colloid osmotic pressure of the body fluids of marine animals gave results which arranged themselves in the order of phylogenetic development. This fact suggested that there exists a rather close relation between the general ...

Notes: [Auszug] EXCHANGES of water between blood and tissues are generally believed, since Starling's work, to be regulated by the equilibrium of two forces, namely, hydrostatic capillary pressure which drives water out into the tissues, and blood colloid osmotic pressure which draws it into the vessels. Based ...

Notes: Summary The Aleksandrov-Urysohn conjecture about the cardinality of a first countable compact spare X is here given an equivalent formulation in terms of a generalized Lindelöf condition in the weak topology on X generated by the Baire functions. A number of related conditions are shown to be equivalent (without assuming that X is first countable); these include two sequential properties of the pointwise topology on various spaces of real-valued functions on X, and the condition that X is dispersed (i.e., has no non-void perfect subsets). Added in prof: The Alexandrov-Urysohn conjecture has been generalized and proved by A. V. Archangel' skii (On the cardinality of bicompacta satisfying the first axiom of countability, Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 187 (1969) (Russian); translated as Soviet Math. Dokl. 10 (1969) pp. 951–955). In his more general theorem the compactness hypothesis is weakened to Lindelöf.

Description: Savannas are extremely important socio-economic landscapes, with pastoralist societies relying on these ecosystems to sustain their livelihoods and economy. Globally, there is an increase of woody vegetation in these ecosystems, degrading the potential of these multi-functional landscapes to sustain societies and wildlife. Several mechanisms have been invoked to explain the processes responsible for woody vegetation composition; however, these are often investigated separately at scales not best suited to land-managers, thereby impeding the evaluation of their relative importance. We ran six transects at 15 sites along the Kalahari transect, collecting data on species identity, diversity, and abundance. We used Poisson and Tobit regression models to investigate the relationship among woody vegetation, precipitation, grazing, borehole density, and fire. We identified 44 species across 78 transects, with the highest species richness and abundance occurring at Kuke (middle of the rainfall gradient). Precipitation was the most important environmental variable across all species and various morphological groups, while increased borehole density and livestock resulted in lower bipinnate species abundance, contradicting the consensus that these managed features increase the presence of such species. Rotating cattle between boreholes subsequently reduces the impact of trampling and grazing on the soil and maintains and/or reduces woody vegetation abundance.
