Description: During the Holocene there has been a gradual increase in the influence of humans on Earth systems. High-resolution sedimentary records can help us to assess how erosion and weathering have evolved in response to recent climatic and anthropogenic disturbances. Here we present data from a high-resolution (~75 cm/k.y.) sedimentary archive from the South China Sea. Provenance data indicate that the sediment was derived from the Red River, and can be used to reconstruct the erosion and/or weathering history in this river basin. Accelerator mass spectrometry 14 C dating provides direct age control and reveals coherent variations in clay mineralogy, geochemistry, and terrigenous flux, indicative of strong chemical weathering and physical erosion during the mid-Holocene warm period (6400–4000 cal [calibrated] yr B.P.), followed by weakening from ca. 4000–1800 cal yr B.P., and renewed intensification since 1800 cal yr B.P.. Comparison with climatic records from China indicates that precipitation and temperature controlled both physical erosion and chemical weathering intensity before 1800 cal yr B.P.. However, weathering proxies in the offshore sediment indicate recent increased soil erosion. We suggest that enhanced human activity (deforestation, cultivation, and mining) since the end of the Chinese Han Dynasty (220 CE) has overwhelmed the natural climatic controls on erosion in the Red River.

Description: Through mathematical calculation, SiC-Al 2 O 3 , Sialon, Sialon-SiC, SiC-ZrO 2 and B 4 C-C non-oxide composites are synthesized by carbothermal reduction reactions from natural minerals, and they can be utilized as additives for refractories to improve slag corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance. In addition, homogenous distributed fine grains can be obtained by using raw materials with small grains by carbothermal reduction reaction. The synthesized non-oxides can be easily dispersed in refractory matrix and the homogenous microstructure is favor to improve the properties of refractories.

Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉The Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds (SHWW) exert important controls on regional and global climate. Instrumental and reanalysis records indicate strengthening and poleward contraction of the SHWW belt since the late twentieth century. Such changes also have implications for Southern Ocean upwelling and CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 degassing. Therefore, a better understanding of the long-term SHWW behaviors and dynamics beyond recent decades is critical for projecting future changes. Here, we applied isotope analysis of 〈span〉Sphagnum〈/span〉 moss cellulose from a peat bog in southernmost Patagonia (∼54°S) to reconstruct changes in oxygen isotope composition of precipitation (δ〈sup〉18〈/sup〉O〈sub〉p〈/sub〉) that could elucidate past shifts in moisture sources and trajectories. We interpreted the positive shifts in δ〈sup〉18〈/sup〉O〈sub〉p〈/sub〉 to indicate weaker SHWW and, importantly, more frequent easterly flows that enhance moisture supply sourced from the Atlantic Ocean. In contrast, negative shifts in δ〈sup〉18〈/sup〉O〈sub〉p〈/sub〉 indicate stronger SHWW and intensification of the Andean rain shadow. Our data, along with other evidence from southernmost Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula, suggest a coherent pattern of centennial-scale variability in SHWW strength on either side of the Drake Passage over the past two millennia, probably as a teleconnection response to El Niño–Southern Oscillation–like variability. Our study implies that investigations of past changes in the SHWW and associated teleconnection mechanisms should consider synoptic-scale atmospheric circulation patterns, rather than seeing SHWW as a simplistic west-to-east (zonal) wind-flow pattern, particularly on the time scales over which the SHWW express zonal asymmetry among different sectors of the Southern Ocean.〈/span〉

Description: On the basis of BP-GA algorithm for boiler efficiency and NOx emission concentration, a combustion simulation model was established. By learning the training samples based on low NOx combustion adjustment tests, the combustion simulation model can accurately map the nonlinear relationship between boiler operation parameters and boiler efficiency and NOx emission concentration. Genetic algorithm was used to obtain the optimization strategies to get the best boiler efficiency and NOx emission concentration, which provides guidance for the operation.

Description: Wireless underground sensor networks (WUSN) are an emerging area of research that promises to provide communication capabilities to buried sensors. In this paper, experimental measurements have been conducted with commodity sensor motes at the frequency of 2.4GHz and 433 MHz, respectively. Experiments are run to examine the received signal strength of correctly received packets and the packet error rate for a communication link. The tests show the potential feasibility of the WUSN with the use of powerful RF transceivers at 433MHz frequency. Moreover, we also illustrate a classification for wireless underground sensor network communication. Finally, we conclude that the effects of burial depth, inter-node distance and volumetric water content of the soil on the signal strength and packet error rate in communication of WUSN.

Description: The Ag doped ZnO films were prepared on sapphire substrates using simple thermal evaporation method. The effect of annealing treatment was investigated in detail. The results shows that the annealed Ag doped ZnO film has a prefer orientation along c-axis. The E 2 (high) mode in Raman spectra has a little blue shift which caused by crystal defects oxygen vacancies, meanwhile the compressive stress was exist in the film. After annealed, the intense of E 2 modes have great improvement which means the quality of the film was enhanced, meanwhile, the compressive stress released to some extent.

Description: With the development of artificial intelligence, more and more reliability experts have noticed the roles of subjective information in the reliability design of complex system. Therefore, based on the certain numbers of experiment data and expert judgments, we have divided the reliability estimation based on distribution hypothesis into cognition process and reliability calculation. Consequently, for an illustration of this modification, we have taken the information fusion based on intuitional fuzzy belief functions as the diagnosis model of cognition process, and finished the reliability estimation for the open function of cabin door affected by the imprecise judgment corresponding to distribution hypothesis.

Description: The ZnO/SnO 2 composite nanophotocatalyst studied in this paper was prepared by a chemical precipitation method, which were characterized by XRD and SEM. The results show that the prepared samples were rutile SnO 2 particles and the average grain size is 8.41 nm. In this paper, the factors for the degradation efficiency of marine diesel oil degraded by ZnO/SnO 2 composite nanophotocatalyst are the catalysts’ doping ratio, the initial concentration of oil, the pH value of seawater, the dosage of catalyst and the dosage of hydrogen peroxide. The results show that the ZnO/SnO 2 composite nanophotocatalyst can effectively degrade seawater diesel oil under UV light. When the doping ratio of ZnO and SnO 2 is 0.35, the reaction time is 2.5 hours, the pH value of seawater with oil is 7, The concentration of diesel oil is 0.1g/L, the dosage of catalyst is 0.3g/L and the dosage of hydrogen peroxide is 0.1 g/L, the highest degradation rate ...

Description: The object of this paper is to study the impervious surface extraction method using remote sensing imagery and monitor the spatiotemporal changing patterns of mega cities. Megacity Bombay was selected as the interesting area. Firstly, the pixel-based and object-oriented support vector machine (SVM) classification methods were used to acquire the land use/land cover (LULC) products of Bombay in 2010. Consequently, the overall accuracy (OA) and overall Kappa (OK) of the pixel-based method were 94.97% and 0.96 with a running time of 78 minutes, the OA and OK of the object-oriented method were 93.72% and 0.94 with a running time of only 17s. Additionally, OA and OK of the object-oriented method after a post-classification were improved up to 95.8% and 0.94. Then, the dynamic impervious surfaces of Bombay in the period 1973-2015 were extracted and the urbanization pattern of Bombay was analysed. Results told that both the two SVM classification methods could accomplish the impervious...

Description: Cavitation in a condensate pump with specific speed of 95 m·m 3 s −1 ·min −1 was treated in this study. Cavitation performance for the pump was tested experimentally, and the steady state cavitating flows in the pump impeller were simulated by RANS method as well as a homogeneous cavitation model. It is noted that cavitating flow simulation reasonably depicted cavitation development in the pump. Compared to the tested results, the numerical simulation basically predicted later performance drops due to cavitation. Unfortunately, the cavitation simulation at the operation condition of 50% best efficiency point could not predict the head drop up to 3%. By applying the concept of relative cavity length cavitation performance evaluation is achieved. For better application, future study is necessary to establish the relation between relative cavity length and performance drop.
