Notes: Total quality management (TQM) and business process re-engineering (BPR) are two management approaches designed to improve organizational performance and quality. Because of the pace, time required, and initiatives for change, TQM and BPR are regarded as two completely different improvement programmes. They also share common features, which create the basis for a possible integration of TQM and BPR under the endless quality improvement concept. Organizations that can effectively combine TQM and BPR would be very successful in gaining a sustainable competitive advantage. In the context of the system approach, introduces a BPR life cycle model. Answers two main questions: when should a re-engineering programme be undertaken?; and how long should the period of gradual improvement last before a new re-engineering programme is implemented? Provides an implementation example of this model through a real organization.

Notes: Today, business organizations compete in the global marketplace. To compete successfully, organizations pursue the status of the world-class organization (WCO). A WCO is defined as the best in its class, or as good as its best global competitor, in providing most value to the customer. The strategic pillars that enable an organization to become a WCO must be supported by effective information systems. Conventional information systems development approaches are not necessarily relevant for WCOs. Presents new approaches to developing the information for world-class organizations.

Notes: It is curious to find out how chief executive officers (CEOs) think of the Internet and e-business. Through an analysis of the homepages of CEOs of the Fortune e-50 companies, we attempted to evaluate the information value of the Websites. The analysis indicates that only a handful of CEOs can be currently regarded as the owners of informative homepages while most CEOs do not appear to be serious in building and maintaining their homepages.

Notes: Suggests that most executive support systems are designed to support executives' information and communication needs. The cognitive aspect of executive support has received relatively little attention in the field of decisions support systems. Focuses on the cognitive aspect of executive work and discusses three types of executive thinking: retrospective, introspective, and prospective. Proposes a three-mode conceptual model for executive support systems design.

Notes: Purpose - Globalization and digitalization have led to the need for a different view of international business. Computer technology, especially in the form of enterprise systems, presents the opportunity to apply best (or at least better) practices. Twentieth century enterprise systems were focused on internal optimization. Twenty-first century enterprise systems need to be much more open, and to focus on the demand chain, driven by serving customers better. To better fulfill this need, this paper aims to present a method for evaluation of business process alternatives focusing on demand chain needs. Design/methodology/approach - A method integrating decision making and system approach principles is presented that includes use of soft systems approaches to identify goals and interrelationships among system parts, generation of alternatives, analysis of alternative performance on goals, refining alternatives to better satisfy goals, and multiple criteria selection analysis to recommend choice. Findings - The method is demonstrated on a small business process design. This process can allow broader consideration of organizational goals and focus on customer demands. Originality/value - The paper demonstrates how such a method might work to better support the design of enterprise systems in this dynamic new environment.

Notes: Purpose - To discuss relative advantages and disadvantages of internally operated ERP- and ASP-delivered ERP functionality, and present the possible future of these alternatives. Design/methodology/approach - A thorough review of recent published papers dealing with advantages and disadvantages of ERP and ASP is presented. A good balance of theoretical analysis and real-world application examples of ERP and ASP is maintained. Some of the disadvantages were discussed from the managerial perspective. Based on these approaches, the possible future direction of ERP and ASP is explored. Findings - Today, organizations need ERP functionality to cope with the increasing complexity and competitive forces in the environment. Thus, ERP- and ASP-delivered ERP systems are widely applied, often with disappointing consequences. The choice that organizations must make should be based on a thorough review of the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative vis-à-vis corporate strategies and resources. Research limitations/implications - A good managerial overview of ERP and ASP for enterprise solutions. Discussion is based on the managerial perspective of the roles of ERP in organizations. Originality/value - This paper focuses on the weaknesses of ERP and ASP rather than glorifying their functions.

Notes: The borderless global economy has accentuated the importance of knowledge as the most critical source of competitive advantage. Thus, knowledge management (KM) has become a strategic mandate for most world-class organizations. A key enabler for implementing an effective KM system is advanced information technology (IT). Strategies for developing an enterprise-wide KM system infrastructure with embedded IT are discussed. In particular, this paper discusses the concept of a KM life cycle - knowledge capture, knowledge development, knowledge sharing, and knowledge utilization, and how applications of new IT support each step of the KM practices within and between organizations is suggested.
