Notizen: This research examines the importance of a set of underlying variables, such as willingness of the supplier to adapt to the dealer, built-up relationship bonds, costs of terminating the relationship, level of shared values, formal and informal communication between the participating parties, opportunistic behavior by the supplier and perceived level of satisfaction in the relation-ship, for achieving high trust and commitment within a supplier-dealer relationship. Data for the analysis are generated from 114 purchasing managers at Swedish lumber dealers, an industry where collaborative relation-ships are not very developed, but considered necessary for future success. Methodology is described and results are discussed. Concludes that companies trying to achieve high trust and commitment relationships, should create high satisfaction relationships, by decreasing their opportunistic behavior, adjusting to the needs of the other part, and developing shared values.

Notizen: Presents a model of five linked maintenance management components (strategy, human aspects, support mechanisms, tools/techniques and organization). Analyses the present status of these components in Swedish manufacturing firms through a survey of 284 respondents. Shows that fewer than half have written maintenance strategies or computerized maintenance information systems and several give maintenance low status. The figures are lowest in small firms and in the timber industry. Preventive maintenance at fixed intervals and corrective maintenance are the most common maintenance techniques. However, condition monitoring is common in large paper and chemical firms. Also indicates that Swedish firms have not fully made maintenance a company-wide issue, and that centralized maintenance departments dominate resources in large firms, but outsourcing has become important in small firms. Many of these figures are considered not to be optimal, but the average firm should be able to improve.

Notizen: An empirical advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) taxonomy with three groups was identified from cluster analysis. The analysis was based on a survey of Swedish metal-working industries and 324 relevant responses were received (response rate of 38 percent). The first group, "the traditionalists" is characterised by firms of relatively small size with low levels of investments in AMT. "The hard integrators" emphasise computerised transactions between sub-units and processes to a larger extent than the investment in administrative, design and manufacturing technologies. "The high investors" group contains relatively large firms that have invested in most technologies and have computerised their transactions significantly more than both the other groups. Companies with heavy investments in AMT had developed the infrastructure (worker empowerment, improvement programmes and organisational design) and maintenance (prevention and integration) aspects to a greater extent than low investors. They also performed better.

Notizen: The applicability of manufacturing planning and control methods differs between environments. This paper explains the fit between the planning environment and material and capacity planning on the detailed material planning and shop-floor planning levels. The study is based on a conceptual discussion and a survey of 84 Swedish manufacturing companies. Results show the use of planning methods and their levels of user satisfaction in complex customer order production, configure to order production, batch production of standardized products and repetitive mass production, respectively.

Notizen: Increased attention has been paid to the question of how to build stable and long-term working relationships between suppliers and dealers. This study proposes a conceptual model including behavioral dimensions of supplier-dealer relationships and presents hypotheses about how to achieve satisfactory inter-organizational relationships. Satisfaction is the consequence of working relationships focused upon in our model. The model is an empirical assessment of the relationship between Swedish lumber dealers and their suppliers. T-test evidence suggests that all proposed critical variables, with the exception of coercive power, are of significant importance for achieving a high rate of perceived relationship satisfaction, regardless of whether the relationship is characterized by a high or a low level of trust and commitment. A good reputation, close relationship and positive relationship benefits are key variables for the achievement of high satisfaction in a "high-trust and commitment relationship". Results also indicate that it is possible to achieve a high satisfaction level even when the supplier-dealer trust and commitment are lacking.

Notizen: The paper identifies six requirements: four critical dimensions (what to measure) and two characteristics (how to measure) of an overall manufacturing performance measurement system. The overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) measure in such a system is assessed against these ideal requirements. The current measurement systems, and the potential of OEE, of three manufacturing organisations are evaluated with the dimensions and characteristics as comparative data. A common weakness of the systems was that they did not measure flow orientation or external effectiveness to any great extent. Another weakness was a high degree of complexity and lack of continuous improvement. Field experiments in the studied organisations showed that use of OEE in combination with an open and decentralised organisation design could improve several of those weaknesses.

Notizen: Modern production management systems are being increasinglycomputerized in the pursuit of higher quality, the faster development ofnew products and lower unit costs. But the present generation of methodsand software, e.g. JIT, MRP II, CIM, omit to integrate the maintenancefunction and do not properly consider plant availability and renewal.Considers how these can be included in the next CIM generation, theadvantages and costs of doing so, and the quality and market-shareconsequences of failure to do it. Total productive maintenance (TPM) andreliability-centred maintenance (RCM) are considered inadequate inthemselves, but each has features which can be used within an integratedmanagement information system to implement TQM and optimize life cycleprofit (LCP), provided that the need to collect and analyse failure, repair and maintenance data in respect of increasingly expensive plantis fully recognized.
