Looks at research work into crane automation for the constructionindustry. Describes the six major areas of the project: analysis ofexisting crane structures and mechanisms, the general problem of remotelygrabbing a load, the application of latest sensor technology, systemintegration, control and communications, teleoperator and data-loggingsystem and crane demonstrator construction. Also considers the use ofadvanced telemetry for communication between cranes and for the remotecontrol operation of the cranes. Concludes that the project demonstrated thatthe emerging distributed control concepts are applicable to cranetechnology.
