Notes: A new compound, obtained during the isolation of oligosaccharides from the urine of two brothers affected with inherited β-mannosidase deficiency, has been investigated using fast atom bombardment ionization and MS/MS techniques. The compound could be characterized as an N-acetylglucosamine molecule linked to a hexose and a urea molecule.

Notes: Spreading, isotherms and polymerization of 2-pentadecylaniline at a planar aqueous electrolyte-organic interface were examined by monitoring the interfacial pressure employing the Wilhelmy-plate method. These results indicate the presence of monomer confined to the interface. Application of a voltage across the interface using stainless steel electrodes results in polymerization to form an electroactive polymer. The interfacial polymerization appears to be effected by metal ions formed by oxidation of the anode that have diffused into the aqueous electrolyte. This phenomenon is dependent on the nature of the electrode material as successful polymerization was not observed with other electrode materials. The polymer formed was soluble in polar organic liquids, was green in its reduced state and blue in its oxidized state, when oxidized and reduced chemically or electrochemically as a thin film. Cyclic voltammetry of the polymer indicates one reversible redox process suggesting that there are only two different oxidation states available, i.e., the equivalent to leucoemeraldine cannot be formed with poly(2-pentadecylaniline) in a thin film. However, the fully reduced yellow leucoemeraldine can be formed in chloroform solution by hydrazine reduction.

Notes: The solvent effect on two SN2 reactions was evaluated by discrete, continuum and discrete-continuum models. The potential energy profiles were found to change dramatically on introduction of the solvent effect. The double-well shape which characterizes the F- + CH3F → FCH3 + F- reaction in the gas phase becomes unimodal when the solvent is introduced, in good agreement with experimental data. The solvation parameters are found to intervene in the reaction coordinate. Recent Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics calculations are discussed.

Notes: An investigation has been carried out for determining the effect of coupling agents on the mechanical properties of polymer-impregnated mortars. Mortar specimens were impregnated with methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer and α, α-azobis-isobutyronitrile initiator, and polymerized thermally in water. Three titanate coupling agents, KR-33CS, KR-55, and KR-138s, and one silane coupling agent, the A-174, were used for the investigation. Varying amounts of coupling agent were used in impregnating the mortars in situ or in pretreating the mortars with a solvent system. Bulk polymerization of MMA shows no appreciable influence of the coupling agents in the reaction kinetics; however, with the exception of KR-138S, all polymers obtained in the presence of coupling agents came out as insolble. Similar results were obtained for polymers extracted with acetone from mortars. The mechanical property results show an improvement of properties in mortars containing 5.0 vol% of KR-33CS and A-174 after impregnation in situ. A slightly better improvements of mechanical properties were obtained by pretreating the mortar specimens with acetone or toluene/xylene containing coupling agents. Microscopic observation of the fracture surface showed no noticeable difference in the surfaces prepared with and without coupling agents.

Notes: Phosphohydroxylysine a compound found in the urine of two patients with a possible inborn error of hydroxylysine metabolism, and related phosphohydroxycompounds were investigated with fast-atom bombardment tandem mass spectrometry techniques. This resulted in a reliable and quick identification method for phospho amino acids in general.

Notes: In this paper we solve an eigenvalue problem arising from the computation of the vibrations of a coupled system, incompressible fluid - elastic structure, in absence of external forces. We use displacement variables for both the solid and the fluid but the fluid displacements are written as curls of a stream function. Classical linear triangular finite elements are used for the solid displacements and for the stream function in the fluid. The kinematic transmission conditions at the fluid-solid interface are taken into account in a weak sense by means of a Lagrange multiplier. The method does not present spurious or circulation modes for non-zero frequencies. Numerical results are given for some test cases. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: This contribution analyzes the changes in the intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) and in the potential energy profiles (PEP) caused by application of a uniform electric field evaluated using standard ab initio MO methods. Two typical organic processes have been studied, namely, the Friedel-Crafts and the Walden inversion reactions, which are modeled by suitable simple systems. The results for the Walden inversion reaction show that the IRC for the field-free and that for perturbed processes are almost coincident; in this case, using the field-free IRC to compute the perturbed energy profile is a very good approximation. On the contrary, for the Friedel-Crafts model reaction, the two IRCs differ slightly, so the energy profiles using the perturbed and the unperturbed IRCs are somewhat different. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Inter-proton long-range and ring couplings were measured in o-anisaldehyde and in seven disubstituted anisoles. In order to investigate the transmission mechanisms of long-range couplings with the methoxy group, partially restricted molecular orbital (PRMO) calculations were carried out within the FPT-INDO method on o-anisaldehyde. σ- and π-electron, and through-space transmitted components were separated. For the energetically favoured trans-OMe conformation a through-space component was found for the couplings of the methyl protons with the ortho-proton, and it was found that its sign, as well as its magnitude, depends on their relative positions. If free rotation, however, is assumed for the methyl group, the averaged value for this coupling constant is negative.
