Notes: A computer program has been developed for the Rietveld analysis of time-of-flight neutron diffraction data taken on a high-resolution powder diffractometer, HRP, at the pulsed spallation neutron source, KENS. A new profile shape function is implemented which is optimized for a solid-methane moderator at 20 K. The program has several convenient features such as single-pass operation, multiphase capability, automatic successive refinements and constrained minimization. The results of Rietveld refinements of Si and α-Al2O3 show that the profile shape function fits neutron diffraction patterns taken on the HRP very well, and that very precise crystal-structure parameters can be obtained with this program.

Notes: A diffraction-intensity data-collection system with synchrotron radiation X-rays utilizing the screenless Weissenberg technique and incorporating a large-format imaging plate is one of the most suitable apparatus for time-resolved protein crystallography with larger angle oscillations than hitherto described. The time resolution and data quality of the system have been tested using a tetragonal lysozyme crystal as a test sample in a flow-cell experiment at the bending-magnet beamline 18B at the Photon Factory, and a time resolution of 15 min is confirmed.

Notes: Off-line and on-line protein data-collection systems using an imaging plate as a detector are described and their components reported. The off-line scanner IPR4080 was developed for a large-format imaging plate `BASIII' of dimensions 400 × 400 mm and 400 × 800 mm. The characteristics of this scanner are a dynamic range of 105 photons pixel−1, low background noise and high sensitivity. A means of reducing electronic noise and a method for finding the origin of the noise are discussed in detail. A dedicated screenless Weissenberg camera matching IPR4080 with synchrotron radiation was developed and installed on beamline BL6B at the Photon Factory. This camera can attach one or two sheets of 400 × 800 mm large-format imaging plate inside the film cassette by evacuation. The positional reproducibility of the imaging plate on the cassette is so good that the data can be processed by batch job. Data of 93% completeness up to 1.6 Å resolution were collected on a single axis rotation and the value of Rmerge becomes 4% from a tetragonal lysozyme crystal using a set of two imaging-plate sheets. Comparing two types of imaging plates, the signal-to-noise ratio of the ST-VIP-type imaging plate is 25% better than that of the BASIII-type imaging plate for protein data collection using 1.0 and 0.7 Å X-rays. A new on-line protein data-collection system with imaging plates is specially designed to use synchrotron radiation X-rays at maximum efficiency.

Notes: Gallium-lanthanum sulfide glasses have specific interesting physical properties, as semiconductor behavior and good transmission at long wavelengths. The addition of CsCl increases the thermal stability region of the glass making it suitable for many applications in optoelectronics. Ga2S3-La2S3 glasses modified by 10 to 40% CsCl have been studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, at the chlorine K edge and at the gallium K edge at 9 K, in order to get information about the actual structural role of CsCl. The chlorine environment is similar to that in CsCl. The gallium coordination sulfur polyhedra are weakly distorted tetrahedra, identical for all samples. The low temperature measurements shown that the polyhedral corner linkage is also unaltered by the addition of CsCl.

Notes: The LNLS XAS beamline has been operating for external users since July 1997. Many facilities and improvements have been progressively added to it, extending the range of applications. Here, a technical description of the main beamline components is given, and results concerning important points, such as available flux at low and high energies, harmonic contamination, energy resolution and stability, are presented. Some key results are given to demonstrate the beamline performance and limitations. It is shown that the beamline can cover a large energy range, starting from the rather low energy of 2.3 keV up to 25 keV.

Notes: We report the electrochemical insertion of copper in polypyrrole films followed by XAS spectroscopy. Depending on the applied potential the copper remains as an ionic form like Cu+n-(OSO3−)n. For more reductive potentials metal particles are synthesized. Small particles with an estimated average diameter of 20 Å were obtained.

Notes: An imaging soft X-ray microscope with zone plates has been installed at Rits SR Center (Ritsumeikan University, Kusatsu, Japan). With this microscope, specimens were set in air, which made it possible to investigate the specimens without breaking the vacuum of the microscope. The specimens can be prefocused with an optical microscope. Dry and wet biospecimens in air were observed. A new optical system was designed to improve the resolution.

Notes: In 1997 the prefabricated house of the TARA Sakabe project was constructed very near to the Photon Factory ring, and many computers were installed for crystallographic data handling. A data server with high speed and large capacity was required to improve the efficiency of the protein data collection system which integrated a `high'-security computer network. The new network, based on a 100 Mbps Ethernet, consists of a DEC AlphaServer 4000 with a 115 Gbytes RAID disk, DLT as a backup device, CISCO PIX-32 as a firewall between the TARA private network and KEK, and a 100 Mbps switching hub to be linked to imaging-plate readers and workstations. Therefore, the digital output data from the imaging-plate reader are directly recorded on the server disk resulting in higher efficiency of the users' beam time. In contrast to recording on tape, there is very little problem with backup resulting in a high confidence in the data-collection system.

Description: Ultra-hot Jupiters orbit very close to their host star and consequently receive strong irradiation, causing their atmospheric chemistry to be different from the common gas giants. Here, we have studied the atmosphere of one of these particular hot planets, MASCARA-2b/KELT-20b, using four transit observations with high resolution spectroscopy facilities. Three of these observations were performed with HARPS-N and one with CARMENES. Additionally, we simultaneously observed one of the transits with MuSCAT2 to monitor possible spots in the stellar surface. At high resolution, the transmission residuals show the effects of Rossiter-McLaughlin and centre-to-limb variations from the stellar lines profiles, which we have corrected to finally extract the transmission spectra of the planet. We clearly observe the absorption features of CaII, FeII, NaI, Hα, and Hβ in the atmosphere of MASCARA-2b, and indications of Hγ and MgI at low signal-to-noise ratio. In the case of NaI, the true absorption is difficult to disentangle from the strong telluric and interstellar contamination. The results obtained with CARMENES and HARPS-N are consistent, measuring an Hα absorption depth of 0.68 ± 0.05 and 0.59 ± 0.07%, and NaI absorption of 0.11 ± 0.04 and 0.09 ± 0.05% for a 0.75 Å passband, in the two instruments respectively. The Hα absorption corresponds to ~1.2 Rp, which implies an expanded atmosphere, as a result of the gas heating caused by the irradiation received from the host star. For Hβ and Hγ only HARPS-N covers this wavelength range, measuring an absorption depth of 0.28 ± 0.06 and 0.21 ± 0.07%, respectively. For CaII, only CARMENES covers this wavelength range measuring an absorption depth of 0.28 ± 0.05, 0.41 ± 0.05 and 0.27 ± 0.06% for CaII λ8498Å, λ8542Å and λ8662Å lines, respectively. Three additional absorption lines of FeII are observed in the transmission spectrum by HARPS-N (partially covered by CARMENES), measuring an average absorption depth of 0.08 ± 0.04% (0.75 Å passband). The results presented here are consistent with theoretical models of ultra-hot Jupiters atmospheres, suggesting the emergence of an ionised gas on the day-side of such planets. Calcium and iron, together with other elements, are expected to be singly ionised at these temperatures and be more numerous than its neutral state. The Calcium triplet lines are detected here for the first time in transmission in an exoplanet atmosphere.
