The book presents results of glaciological investigations, performed for last 10 - 15 years by the Institute of Geography, Russian Academy of Sciences. They embrace studies of: interaction between snow cover and the atmosphere circulation, factors of existence and degradation of perennially frozen rocks, variations of usual glaciers and drastic surges of pulsing glaciers, caused by climate of 20th century, and processes of formation of the glacier-derived runoff. With respect to a territory, this book covers the whole area of the former Soviet Union, as well as the Western part of European Arctic (the Spitsbergen, first of all) and some regions of the Central Asia. This publication can be interesting for specialists in the field of environmental studies, as well as students and teachers of geographical and geological faculties of universities.
