    Description: Variability and trends in seasonal and interannual ice area export out of the Laptev Sea between 1992 and 2011 are investigated using satellite-based sea ice drift and concentration data. We found an average winter (October to May) ice area transport across the northern and eastern Laptev Sea boundaries (NB and EB) of 3.48 × 105 km2. The average transport across the NB (2.87 × 105 km2) is thereby higher than across the EB (0.61 × 105 km2), with a less pronounced seasonal cycle. The total Laptev Sea ice area flux significantly increased over the last decades (0.85 × 105 km2/decade, p 〉 0.95), dominated by increasing export through the EB (0.55 × 105 km2/decade, p 〉 0.90), while the increase in export across the NB is small (0.3 × 105 km2/decade) and statistically not significant. The strong coupling between across-boundary SLP gradient and ice drift velocity indicates that monthly variations in ice area flux are primarily controlled by changes in geostrophic wind velocities, although the Laptev Sea ice circulation shows no clear relationship with large-scale atmospheric indices. Also there is no evidence of increasing wind velocities that could explain the overall positive trends in ice export. Following Spreenet al. (2011), we therefore assume that changes in ice flux rates may be related to changes in the ice cover such as thinning and/or a decrease in concentration. The use of a back-propagation method revealed that most of the ice that is incorporated into the Transpolar Drift is formed during freeze-up and originates from the central and western part of the Laptev Sea, while the exchange with the East Siberian Sea is dominated by ice coming from the Central and South-Eastern Laptev Sea. Furthermore, our results imply that the late winter (February to May) ice area flux may at least partially control the summer sea ice extent in the Laptev Sea.

    Description: The XWS (eXtreme WindStorms) catalogue consists of storm tracks and model-generated maximum three-second wind-gust footprints for 50 of the most extreme winter windstorms to hit Europe over 1979–2012. The catalogue is intended to be a valuable resource for both academia and industries such as (re)insurance, for example allowing users to characterise extreme European storms, and validate climate and catastrophe models. Several storm severity indices were investigated to find which could best represent a list of known high loss (severe) storms. The best performing index was Sft, which is a combination of storm area calculated from the storm footprint and maximum 925 hPa wind speed from the storm track. All the listed severe storms are included in the catalogue, and the remaining ones were selected using Sft. A comparison of the model footprint to station observations revealed that storms were generally well represented, although for some storms the highest gusts were underestimated due to the model not simulating strong enough pressure gradients. A new recalibration method was developed to estimate the true distribution of gusts at each grid point and correct for this underestimation. The recalibration model allows for storm-to-storm variation which is essential given that different storms have different degrees of model bias.     Description: High resolution animations of the ice age surface have been developed as a tool for in-depth analysis of "paleometeorological" features. Synoptic-scale weather conditions of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) are simulated using the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Community Climate Model version 3 (CCM3.6) on a globally resolved T170 (~75 km) grid domain. Model outputs have been saved at hourly intervals in order to better resolve diurnal features. The simulation has been run in tandem with a lower temporally resolved simulation of Kim et al. (2008) to enable a first-pass assessment of significance of features in the shorter run. Both simulations were forced with modified CLIMAP sea ice and sea surface temperatures (SSTs), reduced global CO2, ice sheet topography, lower sea level, and 21 000 BP orbital parameters. Results from the North Pacific show continued high storm activity during the LGM, whereas the North Atlantic tends to be more quiescent. Plots of storm tracks indicate that all North Pacific storms were steered northward into the Gulf of Alaska, bringing relatively warm air and precipitation into the region. This result is consistent with increased poleward heat transport into the region in the LGM climatological run as well as the absence of evidence for glaciation in middle Alaska. Storm-track trajectories should also have decreased upwelling along the northwest American coast – a response consistent with some geological data. The storms and other atmospheric features are illustrated in a high-resolution animation, which may also be useful as a teaching tool. Further investigation of these runs may provide additional insight into features such as wave-wave interactions, which have previously been unavailable to the research community for an alternate-Earth climate that has been at least as common as the present one over the last 500 000 years.

    Description: The relationship between springtime air pollution transport of ozone (O3) and carbon monoxide (CO) and mid-latitude cyclones is explored for the first time using the Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate (MACC) reanalysis for the period 2003–2012. In this study, the most intense spring storms (95th percentile) are selected for two regions, the North Pacific (NP) and the North Atlantic (NA). These storms (~60 storms over each region) often track over the major emission sources of East Asia and eastern North America. By compositing the storms, the distributions of O3 and CO within a "typical" intense storm are examined. We compare the storm-centered composite to background composites of "average conditions" created by sampling the reanalysis data of the previous year to the storm locations. Mid-latitude storms are found to redistribute concentrations of O3 and CO horizontally and vertically throughout the storm. This is clearly shown to occur through two main mechanisms: (1) vertical lifting of CO-rich and O3-poor air isentropically from near the surface to the mid- to upper-troposphere in the region of the warm conveyor belt; and (2) descent of O3-rich and CO-poor air isentropically in the vicinity of the dry intrusion, from the stratosphere toward the mid-troposphere. This can be seen in the composite storm's life cycle as the storm intensifies, with area-averaged O3 (CO) increasing (decreasing) between 200 and 500 hPa. At the time of maximum intensity, area-averaged O3 around the storm center at 300 hPa is enhanced by 50 and 36% for the NP and NA regions respectively, compared to the background, and by 11 and 7.6% at 500 hPa. In contrast, area-averaged CO at 300 hPa decreases by 12% for NP and 5.5% for NA, and at 500 hPa area-averaged CO decreases by 2.4% for NP while there is little change over the NA region at 500 hPa. From the mid-troposphere, O3-rich air is clearly seen to be transported toward the surface but the downward transport of CO-poor air is not discernible due to the high levels of CO in the lower troposphere. Area-averaged O3 is slightly higher at 1000 hPa (3.5 and 1.8%, for the NP and NA regions, respectively). There is an increase of CO at 1000 hPa for the NP region (3.3%) relative to the background composite and a slight decrease in area-averaged CO for the NA region at 1000 hPa (−2.7%).
