Description: During the 2007-2008 antarctic campaign, the Italian PNRA installed a Low Power Magnetometer within the framework of the AIMNet (Antarctic International Magnetometer Network) project, proposed and coordinated by BAS. The magnetometer is situated at Talos Dome, around 300 km geographically North-West from Mario Zucchelli Station (MZS), and approximately at the same geomagnetic latitude as MZS. In this work we present a preliminary analysis of the geomagnetic field 1-min data, and a comparison with simultaneous data from different Antarctic stations.

Description: Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is responsible for systematic magnetic observations in Italy made in observatories and repeat stations. At present, two regularly working geomagnetic observatories cover central and northern Italy: L’Aquila (the main Italian observatory since 1958) and Castello Tesino (since 1964). A new observatory is, at the moment, being installed in the southern Mediterranean (near Sicily) at Lampedusa Island. Once this installation is successfully completed, the three observatories will be able to provide a full coverage of the whole Italian latitudinal extension. A network of magnetic repeat stations is regularly distributed across Italy and measurements in some locations have been made for more than a century. Since the end of the 1970’s, INGV has been developing a modern repeat station network used for the compilation of the Italian magnetic maps. The most recent survey was made between 2004 and 2005 using L’Aquila Observatory as reference.

Description: The Crostolo River section in Italy yielded a detailed record of the Upper Olduvai geomagnetic polarity transition that has been used to support the hypothesis of deep mantle control on the transitional geomagnetic field. The paleomagnetic record is carried by the authigenic iron sulphide, greigite, which was interpreted to have formed shortly after deposition. Our detailed scanning electron microscope investigations indicate the presence of at least 3 generations of pyrite, which usually forms with greigite as a precursor. This suggests that the total magnetization is a complex composite that produced a smoothed record of transitional field behaviour.

Description: From 2000 to 2005 two exploring geophysical missions were undertaken in the Tyrrhenian deep seafloor at depths between around -2000 and -3000 m in the framework of the European-funded GEOSTAR Projects. The considered missions in this work are GEOSTAR-2 and ORIONGEOSTAR-3 with the main scientific objective of investigating the deep-sea by means of an automatic multiparameter benthic observatory station working continuously from around 5 to 12 months each time. During the two GEOSTAR deep seafloor missions, scalar and vector magnetometers acquired useful magnetic data both to improve global and regional geomagnetic reference models and to infer specific geoelectric information about the two sites of magnetic measurements by means of a forward modelling.

Description: During the 1986-87 austral summer a geomagnetic observatory was installed at Terra Nova Bay. During the first years both geomagnetic field time variation monitoring and absolute measurements were carried out only during summer. Since 1991 variometer measurements are automatically performed throughout the year, while absolute measurements are still performed only during summer. In spite of this, interesting observations were obtained during the life (quite long for Antarctica) of the geomagnetic observatory. In particular, this paper briefly presents some of the most important results: studies on secular variation, daily variation (and its dependence from solar cycle and seasons) and geomagnetic higher frequency variations, such as geomagnetic pulsations.

Description: We present a statistical analysis of low frequency (~0.5-5 mHz, periods ~3-30 min) geomagnetic field fluctuations at the Antarctic stations Mario Zucchelli Station (TNB, formerly Terra Nova Bay) and Scott Base (SBA), which are located at the same geomagnetic latitude but with 1-hr difference in MLT (Table 1). The two stations are usually in the polar cap, at the footprint of open geomagnetic field lines, but around local geomagnetic noon they approach the polar cusp. This study focuses on the coherence and phase difference between the fluctuations at the two stations. The analysis is based on 1-min values of the horizontal H component measured during the entire years 2001-2002. The coherence and phase difference have been computed for each 2-hours interval with a step-size of 1 hour. Station TNB is run by INGV; data from SBA are provided by INTERMAGNET CD-ROMs. Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and solar wind (SW) data from ACE spacecraft have been downloaded from OMNI database. Interplanetary data have been delayed by 1 hour to take into account the average SW transit time from ACE to Earth.

Description: From 2000 to 2005 two geophysical exploration missions were undertaken in the Tyrrhenian deep seafloor at depths between -2000 and -3000 m in the framework of the European-funded GEOSTAR Projects. The considered missions in this work are GEOSTAR-2 and ORION-GEOSTAR-3 with the main scientific objective of investigating the deep-seafloor by means of an automatic multiparameter benthic observatory station working continuously from around 5 to 12 months each time. During the two GEOSTAR deep seafloor missions, scalar and vector magnetometers acquired useful magnetic data both to improve global and regional geomagnetic reference models and to infer specific geoelectric information about the two sites of magnetic measurements by means of a forward modelling.

Description: It is well established that earthquakes and volcanic eruption can produce small variations in the local geomagnetic field. The Italian Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) Tectonomagnetic Network was installed in Central Italy since 1989 to investigate possible effects on the local geomagnetic field related to earthquakes occurrences. At the present time, total geomagnetic field intensity data are collected in four stations using proton precession magnetometers. We report the complete dataset for the period of years 2004- 2005. The data of each station are differentiated respect to the data of the other stations in order to detect local field anomalies removing the contributions from the other sources, external and internal to the Earth. Unfortunately, no correlation between geomagnetic signal and the local seismic activity, recorded in Central Italy by the INGV Italian Seismic National Network, was found in this period. Some deceptive structures present in the differentiated data are pointed out. At the end, an application of an autoregressive model on the differentiated data is briefly discussed.

Description: GEOSTAR (1 and 2) and ORION-GEOSTAR 3 seafloor missions have been performed in the frame of a European project whose main objective is the deep-sea investigation by means of an automatic multidisciplinary observatory. During the three GEOSTAR missions it has been possible to acquire scalar and vector magnetic data, useful to improve global and regional geomagnetic reference models and to define sub-surface electric conductivity structure. In this work, after a brief description on the calibration and orientation of acquired data, we propose some estimations of the electrical conductivity of the lithosphere beneath the three different measurement sites.
