    Notes: A silver electrode coated with captopril, 1-[(2S)-3-mercapto-2-methyl-1-oxopropyl]-L-proline, was prepared by covalent bonding method. The modified electrode was long-lived and stable. Experimental results revealed that myoglobin (Myb) could exhibit good voltammetric response at the modified electrode. Square wave voltammetric measurements of Myb with the modified electrode gave a linear relationship between the anodic peak current and the protein concentration in the range of 4 × 10-6 -5 × 10-5 mol/L. The relative standard deviation is 5 % for 6 successive determinations in 2 × 10-5 mol/L Myb.

    Notes: In the reactions of 2,5-di-tert-butyl-1,4-dimethoxybezene (1) with different oxidants, the radical cation 1+. is always detectable by EPR. However, the observed reactivity of 1+. depends greatly on the oxidation systems employed. In S2O82-—Cu2+—HOAc and Ce4+—HOAc systems (HOAc = acetic acid), 1+. appears to have long lifetimes and does not undergo fragmentation spontaneously. In contrast, in (RFCO2)2—CF2CICFCI2 (F113) systems, the readily formed 1+. is short-lived, and large amounts of de-tert-butylation products have been isolated. Experimental results imply that the C—C bond cleavage involved in de-tert-butylation could be a consequence of an attack by perfluoroacyloxy radical on 1+. in their original solvent cage. The fact that addition of methanol to the reaction mixture leads to the formation of a large amount of tBuOCH3 (46%) and other evidence suggest that the tert-butyl group leaves as a carbocation. On the basis of these results, we conclude that the reactions of 1 with (RFCO2)2 are initiated by electron transfer and followed by a fast coupling of various radical species, namely, 1+. with RFCO2 or with RF in the solvent cage, to form σ-complexes which collapse or react with nucleophiles to yield the final products.

    Description: Microseismic signals are generally considered to follow the Gauss distribution. A comparison of the dynamic characteristics of sample variance and the symmetry of microseismic signals with the signals which follow α-stable distribution reveals that the microseismic signals have obvious pulse characteristics and that the probability density curve of the microseismic signal is approximately symmetric. Thus, the hypothesis that microseismic signals follow the symmetric α-stable distribution is proposed. On the premise of this hypothesis, the characteristic exponent α of the microseismic signals is obtained by utilizing the fractional low-order statistics, and then a new method of time difference of arrival (TDOA) estimation of microseismic signals based on fractional low-order covariance (FLOC) is proposed. Upon applying this method to the TDOA estimation of Ricker wavelet simulation signals and real microseismic signals, experimental results show that the FLOC method, which is based on the assumption of the symmetric α-stable distribution, leads to enhanced spatial resolution of the TDOA estimation relative to the generalized cross correlation (GCC) method, which is based on the assumption of the Gaussian distribution.

    Description: Disaster preparedness is critical for reducing potential impact. This paper contributes to current knowledge of disaster preparedness using a representative national sample data from China, which faces high earthquake risks in many areas of the country. The adoption of earthquake preparedness activities by the general public, including five material preparation, and five awareness preparation were surveyed, and 3,245 respondents from all of the 31 provinces of mainland China participated in the survey. Linear regression models and Logit regression models were used to analyze the effects of potential influencing factors. Overall, the preparedness levels are not satisfied, with a material preparation score of 3.02 (1–5), and awareness preparation score of 2.79 (1–5), nationally. Meanwhile, residents from west China where have higher earthquake risk have higher preparedness degrees. The concern of disaster risk reduction, the concern of building safety and participation in public affairs are consistent positive predictors of both material and awareness preparedness. The demographic and socioeconomic variables' effects, such as gender, age, education, income, urban/rural division, and occupied building type, vary according to different preparedness activities. Finally, the paper concludes with a discussion of the theoretical contribution and potential implementation.
