Notes: Abstract A Raney copper film obtained from a Cu-Al alloy deposited by evaporation on a steel plate was found to behave as a copper on alumina catalyst. Contrary to what is found when the Raney is prepared directly from the alloy, prereduction with CO caused an increase in the catalytic activity for CO oxidation.

Notes: Abstract The hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of pyridine over activated carbon-supported Mo and NiMo sulfided catalysts was studied. Without H2S in the feed the catalysts showed a high conversion of pyridine and of piperidine to C5 hydrocarbons at the beginning of reaction, followed by a strong deactivation. A large increase in the conversion of pyridine was observed when H2S was added to the feed at H2S/H2⩾0.006. The conversion of piperidine to C5 hydrocarbons was enhanced by H2S and it increased as the H2S pressure increases up to H2S/H2⩾0.006. The promotion effect of Ni was operative only when H2S was present and it increased with the H2S/H2 ratio. Without H2S, the degree of surface oxidation of the support affected the deactivation of the catalysts. When H2S was added to the feed, the conversion of pyridine was stable and independent of the acid treatment of the support. A more oxidized support enhanced the C-N bond breaking reaction.

Notes: Abstract The effect of digestion conditions (amount of effective alkali, digestion time) on the surface compositions of unbleached softwood (Pinus sylvestris) kraft pulp has been investigated by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). The quantities monitored were the angular dependence of the total O/C ratio, the relative amounts of carbons in different states of oxidation and the adsorption of Al and Ca ions to the carboxyl groups in the surface. Examination of the angular dependence of ESCA intensities shows that the concentration of alkyl carbon is high in a very thin surface layer and that it decreases linearly with decreasing kappa number. The concentration of alkyl carbon is decreased by extraction of the fibres with dichloromethane, but the amount remaining in the surface after extraction still decreases linearly with decreasing kappa number (i.e. it decreases with increasing digestion time). It is suggested that the observed enrichment of alkyl carbon in the outermost surface layers most probably is due to reprecipitation of lignin. In pulp that has not been extracted, there is also strong enrichment of extractives in the surface. This amount increases with increasing effective alkali but is relatively independent of digestion time. ESCA analysis of the Al and Ca bound to the carboxyl groups shows that the amount depends on digestion time; the results are consistent with the notion that the reprecipitated lignin contains carboxyl groups.

Notes: Abstract The effect of prereduction on CO oxidation activity of unsupported copper-chromite oxide catalysts was examined. Results were found to be in good agreement with two mechanisms for a surface copper enrichment due to CO prereduction which produced an activity increase in the copper-chromite catalyst.

Notes: Abstract We present JHK, Brγ and H2 1–0 S(1) imaging of the circumnuclear star forming rings in the active galaxies NGC 1097 and NGC 7771. Their clumpy morphology varies with wavelength, due to extinction, emission from hot dust and red supergiants, and several stellar generations. The H2/Brγ ratios in the rings indicate the main excitation mechanism of the molecular gas to be UV radiation from hot young stars. Both galaxies exhibit similar small Brγ equivalent widths. To explain the observations, we prefer a model of an instantaneous starburst occurring 6–7 Myr ago, as opposed to a constant star forming rate model. A gaseous nuclear bar aligned parallel to the stellar nuclear bar has been detected in NGC 1097, and we discuss the connection between the rings, bars and the fueling of nuclear activity.

Notes: Abstract We present high-resolution Hα velocity fields and rotation curves of the circum nuclear star-forming regions of five barred galaxies. Two of the five objects show substantially smaller initial rises than the three others; these two objects also have spiral structure inside the circum nuclear star-forming ring.

Notes: Abstract Lectin binding, endo-chitinase binding and enzymatic degradation studies show that the epidermal cuticle of the bony fishParalipophrys trigloides (Blenniidae) is chitinous. This is the first evidence that a vertebrate species possesses a chitinous tissue. Recently aXenopus gene has been identified which has significant sequence similarity to the catalytic domain of yeast chitin synthase III, a chitin producing enzyme1,2. Taken together these two findings imply that chitin synthesis capability may be a basic vertebrate feature.

Notes: Abstract Methanol carbonylation has been carried out over carbon supported sulfided CoMo catalysts without addition of CH3I, as promoter, to the feed. A temperature around 250°C, and methanol concentrations higher than 5 mol% were found to be optimum for ester production. Sulfided Mo/C catalysts were inactive for methanol carbonylation, methane being the major product. While sulfided Co/C catalysts were as effective for ester production as CoMo/C catalysts, methanol conversion was higher in the latter. The selectivity to methyl acetate was found to be strongly dependent on the nature of the carbon support.

Notes: Abstract Sulfided αand β-NiMoO4 have been employed as model HDS catalysts, aiming to investigate the effect of phase composition of the precursor mixed oxide on the physicochemical characteristics and activity of the sulfides. Both sulfides are highly amorphous or microcrystalline, and could not be differentiated by means of XRD. The differences in BET area were also found to be minimal. However, it was found by means of TPR that the stable α-isomorph is reduced at lower temperatures than the unstable β-phase in both the oxidic and sulfided states. Sulfided β-NiMoO4 was found to be a better catalyst for the HDS of thiophene than the sulfided α-isomorph. This could be related to the higher stability of the former in H2, as decomposition of the active, amorphous Ni-Mo-S structures results in less active and more crystalline phases, as found by XRD.
