Notes: A series of direct-integration and model-expansion finite element algorithms for a geometrically and materially nonlinear elastodynamic problem are constructed and analysed. The algorithms are constructed by temporally approximating the individual nonlinear stiffness terms such that discrete conservation laws are obtained. This conservative property has a positive effect in providing a stable appromixation, and in addition allows the stability properties of the algorithms to be easily assessed. Stability and convergence criteria for the algorithms are rigorously established using an energy method.

Notes: The possibilities of using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) heavy ends, predominantly volatile liquid n-alkanes (a location-specific hydrocarbon feedstock) for single-cell protein (SCP) production are examined against criteria established to define potentially attractive SCP production processes. The factors discussed include the use of the heat of vaporization for fermentor cooling, the efficiency of conversion of nalkane vapors, problems of maintaining constant composition substrates when feeding volatile liquid n-alkane vapors to laboratory fermentors, the possible solvent effect of liquid n-alkanes, and the possibilities of competitive inhibition. The study confirms that mixed volatile n-alkane feedstocks will introduce major physical and biological problems for both product and process research and development. Even when the technical problems are solved, the economic question of whether a direct production route using the feedstock as the fermentation substrate or an indirect route involving the conversion of the feedstock, by chemical means, into methanol, which can then be used as the fermentation substrate, needs careful examination.

Notes: The rationale behind KISR's involvement in SCP is explained and emphasis towards the use of aerobic thermophilic/thermotolerant methanol-utilizing bacterial cultures is stressed. An attempt is made to correlate different pilot plant harvesting procedures for biomass recovery with product quality. The latter is expressed as crude and true protein content, moisture and ash content, mineral composition of the ash, and amino acids profiles. The most suitable harvesting procedures were found to be those using a mild heat-acid or acid-heat treatment. Both of these procedures gave high recovery efficiencies and suitable product nutrition.

Notes: Several proteins in the relative molecular mass (RMM) range 1150-29000 are examined by means of both positive electrospray and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry. Accuracy of the measured RMMs, resolution and overall sensitivity are discussed. The presence of more than one component in a number of the investigated compounds permitted the assessment of both desorption methods for the analysis of mixtures. Solvent-induced conformational changes are linked to charge-state distribution shifts observed in some positive electrospray mass spectra.

Notes: In an attempt to probe the extent of internal excitation of protonated ions formed by positive fast-ion bombardment, the protonated molecules of four commonly used liquid matrices are formed by means of the above technique and their respective mass-selected collision-induced dissociation (CID) spectra are investigated within the collision energy range, 5-200 eV (in the laboratory frame of references). These measurements are also repeated for the same four precursor ions formed by means of positive-ion chemical ionization in two different reagent gases, NH3 and CH4. The observed dissociation channels and the relative peak heights associated with them imply that the internal excitation of protonated molecules formed by fast-ion bombardment is much higher than that associated with the protonated ions formed in positive-ion ammonia CI(NH3-CI+). On the other hand, close resemblance between the CID spectra of ions formed by the first technique, by CH4-CI+ and by electron ionization is clearly evident.

Notes: A number of commercially available purine derivatives were investigated by means of chemical ionization in ammonia and methane reagent gases. The protonated molecules of the compounds investigated were mass selected and their collision-induced dissociated (CID) spectra monitored using 100 eV collision energy. Competition between the protonation and addition reaction channels which yield MH+ and [M + NH4]+ ions and the major fragment ions observed in the CID spectra reflect certain stereochemical differences between the isomeric precusors investigated. The present work is an attempt to contribute to the continuous search for first and effective means of distinguishing between the various isomers of biomedically important classes of compounds.

Notes: A number of commercial β-lactam antibiotics are investigated by means of cesium ion (Cs+) bombardment in the kinetic energy range 2-35 keV. The relative intensities of the protonated molecules, as well as some of the major fragment ions, are monitored as a function of the Cs+ kinetic energy. The dependence of the intact protonated molecule:fragment ion ratios on the primary-ion kinetic energy is evident in some of the spectra investigated. An attempt is made to interpret these results in terms of existing secondary-ion mass spectrometry data which have been obtained in a different kinetic energy range.

Notes: This work extends the results of previous workers on the influence of drawing on the crystallinity of PEEK and PEK to test temperatures well above Tg and to strain rates up to 103 s-1. The study thus includes measurement of crystallinity in samples tested in the strain rate regime where large increases in flow stress have previously been noted in these and other polymers. The results are in reasonable agreement with other workers on PEEK and are representative of the behavior of both PEEK and PEK at temperatures up to 200°C and strain rates up to 102 s-1. However at a strain rate of 103 s-1 a dramatic increase in crystallinity and reduction in d-spacing is observed. It is speculated that a change in crystalline morphology induced by the high rate testing may account for the observed changes in spacing, crystallinity, and flow stress. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Positive/negative fast-ion bombardment (FIB+/FIB-, negative-ion chemical ionization (CI-) and positive-ion electron ionization (EI+)mass spectrometry are used to investigate a number of 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives. The FIB+ mass spectra presented, acquired at fixed Cs+ ion-gun voltage as well as at different voltages ranging from 1-16 kV, display a close resemblance to their EI+ mass spectral counterparts. Comparison of the FIB- data with data acquired in ammonia CI- demonstrates that for the type of compound investigated in this work, the latter ionization technique yields a superior molecular anion signal and negligible fragmentation. Some of the FIB+ mass spectra presented display a number of unmistakeable qualitative differences which are tentatively attributed to the isomeric stereo-chemistry of the compounds investigated.
