    Description: To exploit the variation in the natural durability of heartwood timber, screening of a large number of trees or timber is necessary. We suggest that the concentration of total phenolics, measured by the Folin–Ciocalteu (FC) assay, can be used to supplement or even replace in vitro decay tests for screening the variation in the resistance of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) heartwood timber against the brown-rot fungus Coniophora puteana (Schum. ex Fr.). We screened the juvenile heartwood of 520 Scots pine trees with the FC assay. Samples from 40 trees, with total phenolics concentrations ranging from 1.9 to 21.7 mg tannic acid equivalents (TAE)/g of heartwood, were subjected to an in vitro decay test.     Description: The stilbenes pinosylvin (PS) and its monomethyl ether (PSM) provide natural decay resistance to Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) heartwood timber. For growing trees, the inducible stilbene production serves as a defence against biotic and abiotic stresses. To improve the potential of reforestation material to produce stilbenes, we assessed the possibilities of selective harvesting from seed orchards. Half-sib progenies growing in a field trial and their grafted mothers in seed orchards were surveyed for several chemical and dimensional heartwood characteristics. The correlations between the clonal means of grafted mothers and the family means of their progenies were high for concentration of PS (r = 0.83, p = 0.000) and PSM (r = 0.60, p = 0.010) and for heartwood density (r = 0.72, p = 0.001). For these traits, the narrow-sense heritabilities (h2) estimated from the progeny trial and the broad-sense heritabilities (H2) in seed orchards were high as well. For the concentration of PS, both h2 (0.67) and H2 (0.81) showed the highest values of any trait. The selective collection of Scots pine seed from seed orchards is a promising way to obtain seedlings that possess genetic potential for active defence and to produce high-quality heartwood as mature trees.

    Description: The role of genotype in the durability of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) wood against decay by brown rot fungus (Coniophora puteana (Schum. ex Fr.) Karst. (strain Bam EBW 15)) was studied in a laboratory test. The wood material was obtained from 32-year-old half-sib progenies of Scots pine. The increment core samples of sapwood and juvenile heartwood were decayed using a modification of the standardized EN 113 method. The mean densities of the sapwood and heartwood samples were 391 and 337 mg·cm3, respectively, and the mean mass losses were 114 and 80 mg·cm3, respectively. The additive genetic components were small compared with the total phenotypic variance, which resulted in small narrow-sense heritabilities in mass loss. The most marked feature was the wide phenotypic variation in mass loss observed in heartwood (range 199 mg·cm3) compared with sapwood (range 72 mg·cm3) samples. Low heritability, together with the relatively high coefficient of additive genetic variation (CVA) in heartwood mass loss, suggests that advances in breeding can only be made through intensive testing in the environments which the studied experiment represents.

    Description: The reproductive success of orchard and nonorchard pollens was studied in seeds from megastrobili exposed during different stages of pollen shedding in a Pinussylvestris L. seed orchard. Wind pollination was controlled experimentally by isolating and then temporarily exposing the megastrobili to four different stages of pollen shedding by orchard trees. The amount of pollen contamination in the seed crop was determined using isozyme markers and an undetected gamete model. The estimated level of pollen contamination was 48% when megastrobili were exposed during the entire pollination season. Contamination was highest (60%) when megastrobili were exposed before actual pollen shedding by orchard trees, and lowest (27%) in seeds from megastrobili exposed during maximum pollen shedding by orchard trees. Reproductive success was measured several ways: as the total number of seeds produced in each treatment, as the ratio or proportion of mature cones per megastrobilus, and as the number of seeds produced per cone or megastrobilus. In 1991, reproductive success was highest before maximum pollen shedding by seed orchard trees. Pollen shedding by orchard trees occurred a few days after most megastrobili became receptive.
