    Notes: Abstract Three active galaxies, generally classified as Seyferts, have been discovered recently to be powerful, low energy γ-ray sources. The similarity between their spectral characteristics and those of the cosmic background at γ-ray energies suggests that these objects could make a significant contribution to this diffuse flux. This contribution has been assessed using two different number densities of γ-ray-emitting Seyfert galaxies based on optical and X-ray data. The comparison of the estimated and measured diffuse γ-ray background intensities is used to gain a deeper understanding of the metabolism of Seyfert galaxies.

    Notes: Abstract During a balloon flight in September 1979 of the MISO low-energy γ-ray telescope, the BL Lac-object MkN 501 was studied in the hard X-ray range above 30 keV and in the low energy γ-ray range up to 19 MeV. No statistically significant X- and γ-ray fluxes were detected. The implications of the upper limits obtained are discussed in the light of the relativistic jet theories recently proposed.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung 3,5-Dijod-3′-chlor-4′-(p-chlorphenoxy) salicylanilid wird als ein neues Mittel gegen den Viehleberegel (Fasciola hepatica) beschrieben. In Schafen ergab eine Dosis von 5 mg/kg gegen geschlechtsreife Tiere und eine solche von 12,5 mg/kg gegen junge Leberegel eine hohe Wirksamkeit. Bei schwerem, akutem Leberegelbefall blieb sogar eine Dosis von 60 mg/kg ohne toxische Anzeichen. Ebenso wurde eine relativ hohe Wirksamkeit und eine gute Verträglichkeit bei der Behandlung von Leberegelinfektionen in Rindern festgestellt.

    Notes: Abstract The multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) locus has been previously localised to 11q13 by combined tumour deletion mapping and recombination studies, and a 0.5-Mb region, flanked by PYGM and D11S449, has been defined. In the course of constructing a contig, we have identified the location of the gene encoding the B56β subunit of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), which is involved in cell signal transduction pathways and thus represents a candidate gene for MEN1. We have searched for mutations in the PP2A-B56β coding region, together with the 5′ and 3′ untranslated regions in six MEN1 patients. DNA sequence abnormalities were not identified and thus the PP2A-B56β gene is excluded as the candidate gene for MEN1. However, our precise localisation of PP2A-B56β to this region of 11q13 may help in elucidating the basis for other disease genes mapping to this gene-rich region.

    Notes: Summary Twenty-seven patients with indwelling urinary catheters and chronic bacteriuria were studied for methenamine efficacy. In a crossover fashion, each patient received methenamine mandelate granules 4 g/day alone, with ascorbic acid 4 g/day, and with ascorbic acid 4 g/day plus cranberry cocktail one l/day.Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, andE. coli were the common pathogens. Urinary acidifiers had no significant effect on mean urine pH, however, high urinary formaldehyde concentrations were associated with the use of ascorbic acid. Bacteriocidal formaldehyde levels were more frequently present in patients with acidic urine pH than those with alkaline pH. Although ascorbic acid increased formaldehyde levels, additional cranberry cocktail had no further effect. Despite higher formaldehyde levels, urine culture results were positive in most cases with or without urine acidification. Methenamine therapy may be of limited value in asymptomatic chronic bacteriuric patients with indwelling catheters.

Zoospore mother cells in Bulbochaete are shown to be surrounded by a structure interposed between the plasmalemma and the cell wall which is interpreted as the precursor of the vesicle which temporarily surrounds the zoospore on its release. 2. As this vesicle precursor matures it thickens apically to form a ring consisting of a core and two layers. These two layers envelope the young zoospore as its vesicle. Later a space, referred to as the sub-ring, develops within the middle layer of the ring. 3. Histochemical tests indicate that the vesicle precursor and ring are highly proteinaceous with a small carbohydrate component. 4. Dehiscence is apical and thought to be assisted by the apical ring. Upon release of the zoospore, its vesicle is essentially composed of the inner layer of its precursor.

    Notes: Summary 1. The ellipsoid to subspherical zoospore of Bulbochaete hiloensis (Nordst.) Tiffany consists of a green body surmounted by a dome-shaped colourless head, around the base of which is a ring of flagella. 2. The body cytoplasm is characterized by a reticulated chloroplast which contains stacked thylakoids; incipient, developing and mature pyrenoids; and microtubules. The remaining cytoplasm contains active ER-Golgi complexes, coated vesicles, dense bodies, cored bodies, a mitochondrial nest, large central nucleus and lipid-like bodies, adjacent to the large vacuoles. 3. The colourless head, packed with mitochondria, has an extensive ER-Golgi system and a mass of vesicles thought to contain mucopolysaccharides. 4. The flagellar apparatus contains approximately forty regularly-spaced basal bodies situated below a banded fibrous ring. Between the basal bodies are located striated ascending roots, microtubular descending roots and supporting structures. 5. Zoospores are positively phototactic and it is suggested that motility is directed either through differential flagellar activity or by an internal steering mechanism affected by reorientation of the flagellar apparatus.

    Notes: Summary 1. Sexual reproduction in Bulbochaete hiloensis (Nordst.) Tiffany is mediated by the production of dwarf males and oogonia. 2. Mature dwarf males have a stipe cell and a variable number of antheridia, each divided by a septum separating two spermatozoids. 3. Each spermatozoid consists of a head and body surmounted by a flagellar apparatus with a ring of six to nine flagella. 4. The spermatozoid body is characterized by a large nucleus with chromatin but without an apparent nucleolus, and a highly reduced chloroplast with stroma starch but no pyrenoids. 5. Each spermatozoid is surrounded by a fibrous vesicle and an electron dense layer which are thought to be functional in the sequential release of the spermatozoids from the antheridium. 6. A vegetative photosynthetic cell undergoes division to eventually give rise to an oogonium and primary and secondary suffultory cells. 7. The suffultory cells have highly vacuolate, degenerate cytoplasm with no chloroplast. 8. Within the oogonium, the nucleus becomes located near an extracytoplasmic, fibrogranular mass of mucosubstances laid down in the vicinity of a partial wall discontinuity. These mucosubstances are possibly functional in splitting the wall to form the fertilization pore. 9. The plug progressively disperses as the oogonial cytoplasm rounds off, receding from the cell wall in the apical and basal regions. 10. Following fertilization the oogonial contents refill the enclosing cell wall. The nucleus returns to the centre of the cell and the cytoplasm becomes dominated by numerous closely-packed, lipid-like bodies. Stages in the development of the seven-layered oospore wall are described.

The general cytoplasmic features of Fischerella muscicola, Stigonema hormoides and cells of Stigonema mamillosum found as a phycobiont in the lichen Ephebe lanata are similar to those found in other cyanophyte cells. 2. In all instances the outer surface of the quadrilayered cell wall bears a series of ridges. The membrane-like outermost layer (L IV) also exhibits a number of evaginations thought to represent sites of extrusion of material from the cytoplasm through the wall into the enveloping fibrous mucilage. 3. Cross walls are formed by inward growth of the two inner layers of the lateral walls, the daughter cells subsequently moving apart through the inward intrusion of the two outer wall layers and a bulk of mucilage. 4. The daughter cells remain connected by a persistent central region of the original septum. This septum is penetrated by pores, although these do not pierce the underlying plasma membranes and no direct connection of the protoplasts is achieved. 5. An apical cell of S. hormoides was found to be capped by remnants of a cross wall, presumably by the disruption of a previously distal cell.

    Notes: Abstract Somatic embryos were obtained and plants regenerated from immature embryos of onion following culture on embryogenic induction media. Highest rates of somatic embrogenesis resulted from 0.5- to 1.5-mm immature embryos cultured on media containing 5 mg/l of picloram. Somatic embryos formed either directly on the surface of embryos or developed from compact cultures. The production of somatic embryos was significantly affected by the addition of auxin, embryo size and cultivar. The potential of somatic embryogenic cultures for plantlet regeneration has been maintained for over 1 year in some lines. Three types of immature-embryo-derived cultures were characterized by histology. Some cultures were morphologically similar to immature-embryo-derived embryogenic cultures of other monocotyledonous species. Cultures such as these have proven to be useful target tissues in transformation studies.
