    Description: The theory of lateral waves is reviewed in the context of long surface gravity waves and is used to interpret the results of experiments performed in a wave tank to simulate tsunami propagation following a disturbance on a continental shelf. It is suggested that since the lateral wave precedes the direct wave at coastal stations its detection might prove useful in tsunami warning systems. © 1982, Cambridge University Press.     Description: 1.Two experiments were carried out to investigate the possibility of sustaining good growth rates and high feed conversion efficiency on restricted levels of feed under conditions of high temperature and humidity.2. Large White pigs were used over the weight ranges 50-90 lb. and 90-160 lb. live weight.3. In Exp. 1, three groups each of eight pigs were fed on three planes, high, medium and low, the aim being to restrict energy intake while providing adequate protein intake for good growth. In Exp. 2, two groups each of eight pigs were fed on the medium plane from 50-90 lb. live weight and thereafter one group remained on the medium plane, while the other was fed a very low plane. The very low plane consisted of a daily feed allowance of 31b. 4oz. from 90 to 1601b. live weight. All the pigs were individually fed.

    Description: SUMMARYThroughout the 21st century, livestock diseases will impact upon the productivity of domesticated livestock and compromise the ability to feed a growing global population. The focus of the present review is to outline how the recent rapid expansion of genetic sequence data available for both pathogens and hosts can be exploited to develop new tools to improve the ways in which livestock diseases can be controlled. In the post-genomics era of the future, there will be a more intimate understanding of the way in which pathogens interact with their hosts and the key molecules that define host–pathogen relationships; knowledge that can be utilized to generate novel diagnostics and vaccination strategies. However, experience from the global rinderpest eradication programme highlights that effective disease control is a multifactorial process. Clearly, appropriate new therapeutic and diagnostic tools can play a critical role in our ability to monitor and limit the spread of diseases. However, adequate resources are also required: these are principally financial and also include the availability of trained personnel and veterinary infrastructure; international cooperation, transparency between different countries and sharing of epidemiological data and ownership of disease; acceptance of the difference in perception of importance of diseases in the developed world v. the developing world.

    Description: Monitoring ice motion provides insight into the relative contributions of atmospheric and oceanic forcing to polynya dynamics In this study ice kinematics in the North Water (NOW) region, northern Baffin Bay Canadian Arctic are determined using time-sequential RADARSAT-1 ScanSARWide imagery (from the period January-December 1998), processed by the automated ice-tracking algorithm (Tracker) currently used at the Canadian Ice Service (CIS). A case-study is then carried out on the Smith Sound region from January till the end of june 1998 to monitor polynya formation, maintenance and disintegration. This has two objectives: (1) to evaluate satellite ice-motion products as a means of better understanding the relative contributions of latent- and sensible-heat mechanisms responsible for the formation and behaviour of the NOW polynya, and (2) to study the influence of winds on regional sea-ice motion. Derived ice-motion maps were validated using in situ ice beacons deployed onto floes in the NOW region during the 1998 ship-based science experiment. Tracker-derived displacement and directional regressions were 0.93 and 0.79, respectively, with a total standard error of 3.6 km in magnitude and 38.8° in direction. Analysis of monthly mean ice-motion maps shows that a significant export of ice occurs from the polynya. A comparison of weekly-averaged ice motion with the mean wind-field data suggests that ice export in Smith Sound is influenced by synoptic-scale atmospheric pressure systems.
